Maine football

Recommended Posts

Portland only a 3 1/2 hour ride from Albany. Stayed in Old Orchard Beach. Even with air temps in the upper 60s, the sea breeze is chilly and damp. Fortunately an LL Bean factory store is a few blocks from the stadium, so we picked up some heavier sweatshirts.

Fitzpatrick is a high school stadium, artificial turf, 6000 bleachers.

Good news - I know Fitz isn't Maine's normal home field, but University Field is no longer the slowest concession stand in college football. Got in the shorter of two lines at halftime, stayed 20 min. and gave up. The guy behind me was served at the end of the third quarter. (crowd was about 5,700)

Bad news - FS Eric Neugebauer was knocked out of the game in the 3rd quarter. Walked off on his own, iced both the right knee and right ankle. Didn't see any other major injuries.

This game it was Hall that looked better at QB. Running game still couldn't get much going. Receivers dropped a couple. On one of the blocked punts the P was trying to run on 4th & 1, then tried to kick on the run, but the play was to the short side of the field and he didn't have enough room to get clear. I don't know how many Maine D starters were still in in the 4th, but Hall beat a blitz on the pass play before Albany's touchdown.

Maine offense actually looked better than UMass - relentless running with great 2nd effort, and the QBs looked to have stronger arms than UMass - but without the bad long snaps for field position, Albany defense held their O scoreless in the 2nd half. Most of the stops were helped by Maine taking a lot of penalties.

The Maine band was only 1/5 the size of UMass, but they got a lot of practice playing 'Fill the steins'
