UAlbany gets federal grant for program to cut student-athlete drinking

The Business Review (Albany) - 4:50 PM EDT Monday

The Counseling Center at the University at Albany, N.Y., has won a $300,000 federal grant to reduce high-risk drinking among athletes.

The money from the U.S. Department of Education will be used for a program called "Project Winning Steps." M. Dolores Cimini, a licensed psychologist at the University Counseling Center, said the program will be designed to reduce student-athlete's alcohol use and the "harms" or negative consequences of that behavior.

UAlbany Athletic Director Lee McElroy said athletes are leaders on campus and, as such, they "should exemplify behaviors that advance effective, lifelong-learning strategies."

In all, the University Counseling Center has attracted more than $3.5 million in funding for alcohol and substance abuse counseling, treatment and educational programs on campus.
