James Stellar, incoming provost at the University at Albany, says a priority will be connecting more students with businesses for experiential learning.

Stellar, the provost and vice president for academic affairs at the area's largest university, says internships and co-ops can be the most successful form of career development.

"This is a national issue," Stellar says. "Nationally, businesses are telling higher education that students could be better trained in terms of working in teams and having the ability to speak and communicate their ideas."

Stellar was the provost at Queens College of the City University of New York. He spent a year developing a new position, vice president of academic innovation and experiential education, to consider how the college could connect students with experiential learning opportunities, like internships, co-ops and virtual internships.

"The idea is let's be creative," Stellar says. "Let's use our creative energies to focus on ways we can partner with industry in ways to develop better students and better relationships with industry."

Stellar was scheduled to begin work with the university today. He joins UAlbany as it begins two colleges in engineering and emergency preparedness. UAlbany enrolls more than 17,000 students.
