Bob Weiner has an article on the front page of today's Gazette sports section entitle "Great Danes coach a man of his word" The article is about Coach Marr. Dr. McElroy states that while he was at American, he hired a woman whose husband had been coached by Marr at Maryland and when this woman heard Dr. McElroy had taken the job here, she told if if he ever had to hire a lacrosse coach, he should hire Marr. "She said he was enthusiatic, was a good recruiter, was well respected and could get the trust of the kids". The article tells how the student-athletes on the search committee came to Dr. McElroy and said they wanted Marr as their new coach. When asked why, they responded that they respected him and they would go to the NCAAs if he got the job.

Coach Marr indicated that he did his homework before accepting the job. He had other opportunities, including a head job at Denver and other assistant job, but waited for the right opportunity. He states "I looked into what Albany could bring to the table, as far as the recruiting end. I knew they had excellant facilities, academics, a pool of great New York kids and reasonable tuition fees"

The article continue to review his career, talks about what he looks for in a recruit, and talks about the importance of depth along with finding players like Solazzo, Daquino, Thomson and Rae. But the article saves the best for last. Marr says "As far as our goals are concerned, I don't see why we should stop short of winning the national championship. That should be our goal every year"

Today's Gazette also has an article about the improvement in Section 2 high school lacrosse. Five NCAA teams have section 2 kids playing - Army, Navy, Cornell, Hobart and us.
