George Washington Search Update
- 13 Apr 2016
I have heard from multiple sources on the search to replace Jonathan Tsipsis at George Washington. It sounds like the search is down to 3-4 candidates, with a decision expected shortly. The names that I’ve heard are:
Ali Jaques – Head Coach Siena
Krista Kilburn-Steveskey - Head Coach Hofstra
Samantha Williams – Assistant Coach Louisville
GW Search Update II
- 14 Apr 2016
A very fluid search right now at George Washington which looks like is about to come to an end shortly. I have now heard that a decision is imminent. I can confirm that Hofstra Krista Kilburn-Steveskey is no longer involved, but a current head coach from the MAAC is making a strong push. This one could be wrapped up before the weekend. More as I hear it.
If Jaques gets the job, it will be interesting to see what her contract is.

GW Update: Round 3
- 14 Apr 2016
This has been one of the crazier searches that I have covered in a long time! I can now confirm that George Washington has settled on their replacement for Jonathan Tsipsis and the announcement is expected either later tonight or tomorrow morning. The choice is a current DI head coach whose candidacy came out of nowhere! More on this when it’s made official.
different source on twitter says its ...............
Jen Rizzotti - to GW - wow

You really can't blame the girl for backing out. She signed on with a dynamic, hard driving proven championship coach and might wind up with ???? The new one may be good too, but
it'll be a very tough act to follow.
The new coach wasn't even given a chance to try to keep her.

Hilaire was one of 4 signees during the early period

This is why there needs to be a coach in place ASAP. This was not a rebuild for the team but it may turn into one. UA granting the release indicates that they are not even close to naming a coach . . . either out of paranoia or dread or just an ol' reporter's curiosity, I check the Central Florida athletics site daily to see if any/all of Coach Abe's assistants are going with her (especially Balerio), but there's been nothing new since all the hiring hoopla . . . even if it's not one of the assistants, surely Benson et al have ONE or TWO or THREE specific people in mind??!!
Why would the AD grant a release before giving the next coach a chance at keeping a top recruit?
1) A new coach will not be in place in the next week or two so it gives the recruit time before the final signing date of May 18.
or
2) ???????????????

I hope so too -- internal candidates, etc. Regardless, I think the HC job still has to be posted for 30 days, is that right? It's a "state" job. Or are there exceptions?
The position of Div I Head Bsktball Coach does not have to be posted for 30 days nor at all. Last year when Bobby Hurley left Buffalo his assistant Nate Oates was hired 2 days later. The University can hire who they want when they want for this position.
-
The head coach position has not been posted yet. The DBO job was posted 2 days after the NCAA run ended at Syracuse. I may be way off base but, along with the information in the Gish article, it seems to me that internal candidates are at least being considered.

Use Butler Men's Team as the example. Brad Stevens served 6 or seven seasons under Todd Lickliter. When Lickliter left for Iowa, Stevens took over and continued the success of team. The UA women are primed for another championship run and the future is very bright. Tahnee played 3 seasons under Coach Abe was the first assistant hired here and is planning on going to UCF. She knows the players, the system, the school and the conference. She does appear to have the same fire in the belly as Coach Abe.
Mark Benson - please don't try to reinvent the system - give her a call before she gets settled in the land of Disney.

As further example, Heather Forster was the only Frosh to stay with the women's team this year. The three other Frosh left the team.
-
There were no buy out clauses in the in any of the contracts of the coaches who were hired under Lee McElroy. His philosophy was that if a coach had an opportunity to move to a higher level position it was pointless to erect a barrier to that.

I hope she does well at UCF but $275k plus bonus for a conference that is basically a one bid league (UCONN + 1) is not a huge improvement. UCF averaged under 700 fans per game for home attendance this season. They had 7 wins for the season. USF was the other team in the NCAA's and they lost in the first round. This job appears to be only another stepping stone not a place where you can contend for a national championship. Her base salary here was over $200K last year. What the ...

I don't want to see a bunch of candidates with exceptional resumes. Trina Patterson looked like a proven winner on paper. She played and was captain of a sweet sixteen team at Virginia. She was a head coach at Maryland Eastern Shore and William and Mary. She had experience as an assistant with Team USA. That hire did not work out well for Albany. We had very good talent on the floor but no drive for excellence. We need to keep the attitude of the program on the same track it started on six years ago.

I didn't see the "I'm going to Disney World" ad after the Florida upset.

Already have 4 signees from early period. More important to keep those commitments. Next years team is going to be excellent if kept intact and will probably be the preseason favorite again.
-
No time to waste must move on quickly. I say offer Tahnee Balerio the position. She has both played and coached under Coach Abe.

Pete Iorizzo: Will UAlbany hoops success lead to coach leaving?
Abrahamson-Henderson has made seven NCAA appearances as a head coach
http://m.timesunion.com/sports/article/Pete-Iorizzo-UAlbany-women-s-success-could-have-6925021.php
Once again Pete's insight is amazing - Mid-major team wins a first round game - NEWS FLASH EVERYBODY - Other schools may offer Coach a job.

Princeton - why not us?

More importantly - only Albany out of the 4 SUNY University Centers has EVER made it to the Women's Tourney
We are the only ones and we have done it 5 times
oops - UB women won today as did the men - oh well - congrats to the Bulls

Maine box score says attendance was 1519, which seems pretty low. Maine had a couple hundred fans (many more than Hartford for the men's playoff) with a loud band, and our student section was mostly full even though spring break started at 4:00. Saw Ennema and Sanders there.
RealtimeRPI had us a twelve seed until the Maine loss, we've been a 13 since then. FIve straight championships would count for something if we had actually beaten some power teams instead of losing on the last possession. There's not much difference between 12 and 13 because you still have to beat the 4 and 5 to get to the sweet 16. Edit: Back up to a twelve today.
Of the teams we lost to, Tennessee is projecting about a six or seven seed, Army 13 or 14, and Southern Cal finished 18-13 with an RPI of 55 and not dancing.
I spent most of the game wondering what happened to the "freedom of movement" refs were supposed to allow this year. Maine had the paint packed in pretty well. Without long-range shooting we need to be close to perfect on the 10-12 footers.
The difference between a 12 or 13 seed is that as a 13 you will be playing a 4 seed on their home court in the first round. The top 16 seeds will be hosts in the first and second rounds.
