Pep Band

Recommended Posts

I am hoping the pep band adds more atmosphere as well. I was impressed with what I heard from the UMBC band on the radio the other night. They were loud and up-tempo. Plus, they played FREQUENTLY.

The thing that annoyed me last year about our band was that they only played during certain planned timeouts (promotions were going on during the other ones). THEY ARE MISSING THE BOAT HERE!!!! Show up early and start playing 20 minutes BEFORE the game while warmups are going on. You could fit in about 5-10 songs right there. I feel like they are there, but don't play enough during the game. Things are moving in the right direction in that area, but they need to take it more seriously and understand better the concept of being a pep band.

One problem with the pep band may be that at some schools (not sure about UMBC) it is a part of the music department or something, where the students have an incentive to play. My understanding was that albany's pep band is made up of music lovers and volunteers, and so perhaps they don't practice as much.

A good pep band adds a lot during the game when the crowds are large, but it's kind of awkward when you don't have the crowds to back it up. That will come, though, so they need to set the standard now (I agree).
