Dear Friends, Family, and Alumni of UAlbany Volleyball:

I hope this finds you all doing well. The volleyball program has had a great start to the season so far. We opened the season at Seton Hall a week and a half ago with a 3-0 win. First matches of the season are usually a little choppy, and this one certainly was. We wanted to get stronger and try and find our rhythm as the match went along - and we did. To hit .333 as a team in our first match, we were very happy about. Ashley Hunter had a big match with 24 kills and hitting .488. Two nights later we had our home opener against Buffalo. It was an exciting atmosphere as we had tremendous fan support! I was very happy to see how we were able to come back from a fairly big deficit in game three after losing the second and then being strong in the fourth. Ashley Hunter again had a big match with 23 kills and hitting .422. This past weekend we traveled down to San Marcos, Texas. We opened with a fairly easy win against Morgan State where freshmen Kamisha Kellam and Mari Serkowski both saw their first collegiate action. The second match was against defending Southland Conference champion Texas State. This was a big match against a team that doesn't lose on their home court often. We showed a lot of poise at the end of each games and were able to make the plays each time to win. Our passing was tremendous all match and allowed us to run our offense efficiently. On Sunday we played #19 ranked Cal. Game 1 was back-and-forth with neither team leading by more than 2 or 3 points. The game was tied at 28-28 before Cal put it away. Game two the Great Danes fell behind 8-0 behind our poor passing and their strong block before we were able to side-out. We then started clawing our way back, tying the match at 19 and then it was a battle the rest of the game. The match was tied at 28, 29, 30, 31, and 32 before Cal won it on a thundering kill. We had a tough time in Game 3 as frustration sat in on lost opportunities. Ashley Crenshaw had a great weekend in her first significant playing time as a Dane. She has filled in nicely with Hillary White rehabbing an injury she received during the Buffalo match. Ashlee Reed went back to her home in Texas and received All-Tournament honors along with libero Ashley DeNeal. Ashley Hunter and Blair Buchanan were honored by the America East conference with Player of the Week and Setter of the Week awards.

We have a big weekend coming up this weekend as Penn, Iona, and Ohio all head into town for the UAlbany Volleyball Classic. Penn has won 3 of the past 4 Ivy League Championships, Iona was a NCAA Tournament team last year, and Ohio is ranked 30th in the country. The tournament schedule will be at the bottom of this e-mail. If you are not able to make it this weekend, you can listen to the Penn match on WCDB 90.9 or via the internet Friday night. A link should be listed on our web-site. Also, the Ohio match precedes the home football game on Saturday.

I'm also excited to announce that '98 graduate Rafaela Nikas will be inducted into the UAlbany Athletic Hall of Fame on October 7th. Rafaela will be the 4th volleyball player to be inducted after Elizabeth Rosentel-Insley ('83), Heidi Grunwald ('88), and Patty Munhall-Blacklock ('87). Congratulations Rafaela!!!

As always, if you'd like to be removed from this e-mail list, or know someone that would be interested in receiving it, please pass along an e-mail.

Best wishes and GO DANES!!!

Kelly Sheffield

Head Volleyball Coach

From those of us who were not able to be at the match tonight, it was great to hear the broadcast on WCDB. Sometimes the guys would get so excited they would forget to tell their listening audience what was happening! Hopefully more matches will be broadcast this year.

Thanks!
