State of Upstate Address

Maybe he got the point a little bit?

In what he touted as the first-ever State of Upstate speech, Spitzer called for an Innovation Fund for "cutting-edge research at New York's public and private colleges and re-think the way we use and invest in our community colleges."

Spitzer delivered the speech in one of the Northeast's most economically devastated cities at Buffalo State College. Using the University at Albany Nanotech research center as an example, he said such university relationships with the private sector could spark the economy. The Innovation Fund, he said, would help develop the research partnerships and pay for 2,000 more faculty members during the next five years.

Should have talked about this in his SUNY address as well.

I still have to wonder what Spitzer's plans are for UA? It's not been defined yet. Granted, these are just speeches at this point but he did call out UB and SBU by name as “flagships” in the State of the State.

Spitzer reiterated “UB 2020” in today's speech. Keep in mind that Spitzer doesn't need legislation to make UB and SBU flagships. The “UB 2020” plan would make UB a de facto flagship. They would by over 40,000 students, huge research budgets and have many professional schools. They would tower over every other SUNY campus. Is there a similar growth plan for SBU? What's this “big news” SBU was going to hear? Where does UA fit into this picture? Nano Tech has been great but its had almost no impact on our student body (or national rankings like US News) other than a few PhD candidates.

Personally, whether or not Spitzer delivers on the stadium will tell me a lot. Name one flagship, or anything close to it, that plays on a field like ours. A SUNY showcase would have a real stadium, a regional university well... you know the answer.
