University at Albany’s Zuliana Fontanez and Freddie Wills have been named America East Conference indoor track and field performers of the week

Cambridge, Mass. – University at Albany’s Zuliana Fontanez and Freddie Wills have been named America East Conference indoor track and field performers of the week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday afternoon.

 

Fontanez, a sophomore from Dorado, Puerto Rico, has been selected as the women’s track performer of the week. Fontanez finished in seventh place in the 500-meter dash in a season and conference-best time of 1:17.06 at the Giegengack Invitational hosted by Yale on Saturday, Feb. 2 at Coxe Cage. Fontanez was also a member of the fifth-place distance medley relay team and sixth-place 4x400-meter relay team.

 

Wills, a junior from Londonderry, N.H., has been honored as the men’s field performer of the week. Wills won the heptathlon with a record-setting and IC4A-qualifying total of 5,029 points at the Syracuse Invitational on Friday, Feb. 1 and Saturday, Feb. 2 at Manley Field House in Syracuse, N.Y. Wills’ performance set the school record and is the second-highest in the America East this season. The previous record of 4,914 points was set by David Parker at the 2007 America East Championship.

 

UAlbany returns to the track on Friday, Feb. 8 and Saturday, Feb. 9 at Boston U.’s Valentine Invitational in Boston, Mass.
