Big Men Rowley, Warney Pace Teams to Wins, Earn Men's Hoops Weekly Honors

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Forwards from the two teams with the best overall records in America East are this week's men's basketball weekly award winners. The honorees for the week ending January 13 were announced Monday afternoon.

 

University at Albany's Sam Rowley averaged a double-double last week and led his Great Danes to two win as he earned Player of the Week honors for the first time in his career. Stony Brook University's Jameel Warney took home his sixth Rookie of the Week award, by leading Seawolves to two wins.

 

Rowley (Sydney, Australia) made the most of his first two career starts last week as he averaged 15.5 points, 13.0 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.0 steals and shot 72 percent from the field en route to earned top player honors. The sophomore forward, the third different Great Dane to take home Player of the Week honors this season (Mike Black, Jacob Iati), scored a career-high 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting and added a career-best 13 boards while dishing out four assists in a win at Binghamton Monday. He then had 10 points and another 13 boards in a win over Maine Saturday. In the first four conference games this season, Rowley is averaging a double-double with 11.8 points and 10.0 rebounds a game. He had helped the Great Danes get off to its best 18-game start (14-4) as a Division I program

 

Warney (Plainfield, N.J.) averaged 15.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 blocks and led Stony Brook in scoring last week as it won both games and improved to a program-best 12-4. The freshman big man, who has already earned six Rookie of the Week honors this year, started his week by scoring 13 points to go with eight rebounds in a win at Binghamton Wednesday. He then had a team-high 17 points and six boards in a win over Hartford Saturday.
