Attached is part of an email from my son who is a professor in the School of Public Health @ the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee:

Chancellor’s Update: UWM Once Again Earns R1 Status

"Dear UWM Faculty, Staff and Students,

What a wonderfully gratifying way to start out the week! It is my great pleasure to announce that UW-Milwaukee has, once again, earned “R1” (Research 1) status and is one of the top research universities in the country. UWM is one of only 120 universities – of 4,665 – nationwide to receive this ultimate recognition for top doctoral universities"

My son let me know that UAlbany has also received R1 status for the second year in a row. I am always trying to get him and his wife and especially the grand kids to move back; so he keeps track of UAlbany for me. Unfortunately they are pretty entrenched in Milwaukee now, even though I tell him we have a better basketball team {but NOT this year.} Anyhow, apparently unless you are a perennial R1, like Yale, Harvard and a small number of others, IT IS quite an accomplishment to receive R1 status even once, let alone in back to back years.

So a little shout-out to UA and for my son's sake UWM!
