Sports staff

UAlbany junior star midfielder Katie Pascale scored with 11 seconds left and the Great Danes topped Brown 8-7 on the road in a back-and-forth nonleague matchup on Saturday afternoon in Providence, R.I.

Fresh off scoring nine points in a home victory against Fairfield, Pascale opened the scoring at 1 minute, 35 seconds into the first quarter on an unassisted effort. Senior midfielder Sarah Falk doubled the advantage with 10:58 remaining in the first off a feed from junior attack Bryar Hogg.

After Brown’s Leah Caputo scored her team’s first goal of the game and assisted on another, Hogg restored the Great Danes’ lead at 3-2 off an assist from Pascale. Pascale then added another solo effort to put the Great Danes (2-2) in front 4-2 with 5:29 remaining in the explosive first quarter.

Brown’s Mia Mascone finished the scoring in the opening period off a free position attempt with 4:51 left. Mascone then scored the only goal of a relatively quiet second period, and the teams went into halftime tied at 4.

Nathalie Ahn gave the Bears their first lead of the game with 5:17 left in the third following back-to-back saves by Brown goalie Claire Mahoney on shots by Hogg and UAlbany sophomore attack Ava Poupard.

After Pascale took the draw on the following faceoff, UAlbany sophomore attack Emma Weaver evened the score at 5 with 4:27 remaining in the third. The teams then traded goals the rest of the way, setting up Pascale’s heroics in the closing seconds of the match.

Pascale, who was named America East Player of the Week on Monday after scoring five goals and handing out four assists in a home loss to Cornell, finished with three goals and two assists against Brown (1-1). Hogg finished with two goals and an assist, while Falk finished with a pair of goals.

UAlbany keeper Aislinn Sweeney stopped 10 shots for the Great Danes to preserve the win, while Mahoney finished with nine saves for Brown.

The Great Danes travel to Syracuse on Wednesday for a huge matchup against the No. 2 Orange (3-0). The game is schedule for a 4 p.m. start. The Great Danes are 0-8 all-time against the Orange, losing 18-11 at the Carrier Dome in 2022.
