San Diego, Calif. – UAlbany dropped two matches on the second day of the San Diego State Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Great Danes were defeated, 3-1, by the host Aztecs early in the day, and fell, 3-0, to UC Irvine in the second match. San Diego State was victorious in three sets, posting scores of 25-19, 22-25, 25-22 and 29-27. UC Irvine swept the second match by scores of 25-19, 25-22 and 26-24.

 

Against San Diego State, junior outside hitter Valerie Sourbeer recorded a career-high 18 kills and tallied four service aces to lead the Great Danes offensively. Senior middle blocker Kamisha Kellam added 13 kills and eight total blocks for UAlbany, while freshman libero Laurie Gonzalez finished with a team-high 13 digs. Sophomore setter Brooke Stanley finished with 42 assists for the Great Danes.

 

San Diego State (1-1) was led by sophomore middle blocker Lauren Salisbury, who recorded a match-high 19 kills and seven total blocks. Sophomore right side hitter Kelsey Manasco and junior outside hitter Stephanie Darnall tallied 11 and ten kills, respectively, while senior defensive specialist led the Aztecs with a match-high 25 digs.

 

Sourbeer led the Great Danes in the second match of the day against UC Irvine, finishing with nine kills. Sophomore outside hitter Amanda Cowdrey added eight kills and seven digs, while Kellam tallied six kills and six total blocks. Freshman defensive specialist Rachel Sarcione led UAlbany defensively with eight digs, while Stanley recorded 26 assists.

 

Sophomore outside hitter Larissa Nordyke paced the Anteater offense with 12 kills. Senior outside hitter added seven kills for UC Irvine, while senior libero Devon Sutherland recorded a match-high 13 digs. Junior setter Taryn Robertson recorded 33 assists and nine digs to go along with three total blocks for the Anteaters.

 

UAlbany (0-3) returns to Albany to host the UAlbany Classic on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 5-6. The Great Danes will welcome Connecticut, Buffalo and Wright State to University Gymnasium for the two-day tournament.

I Gametracked all three of those games, and they were all damn close sets. This included Friday's game vs #23 SanDiego.

 

If you check out the set scores, you will notice a competitive Great Dane team.
