SBU solidifying football future

Recommended Posts

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -The Big South and Stony Brook have announced a four-year extension that will keep the Seawolves as a football-only member of the conference through 2015.

While the Long Island school in a Southern league is hardly a natural fit, both sides need each other.

Stony Brook joined the Big South in 2008 after rejecting the Northeast Conference's new scholarship restrictions. The Big South needed to expand to have enough teams to get an automatic bid to the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs.

The Big South champion is guaranteed a postseason berth for the first time this year.

Stony Brook shared the 2009 Big South title with Liberty after upsetting the Flames in the season finale.

Stony Brook competes in the America East in other sports.

Therefore, are they obligated to STAY in the big south conference until 2015 as of right now, regardless if any other conference wants to add them to theirs?

ie: caa

They're likely obligated as far as what they are willing to pay as a penalty for leaving early. In looking at the MAC's history as an FBS conference allowing football-only members, there are few hindarances to breaking a pact. UCF was admitted FB-only, then the MAC entended a full-membership offer which UCF declined. Not long after their CUSA invite came and they had to pay $400,000 to the MAC with 3 years remaining in their pact, as well as an exit fee for their A-Sun sports (per a UCF poster at that time). Now Temple's pact is coming to an end soon and it seems a re-up is likely. But we all know they could handle and would certainy pay the MAC if they got their (in their hopes and dreams) BE re-invite, or a bizzaro-land CUSA invite.

I would think the Big South exit fee for SBU would be chump-change compared to what UCF had to pay.

Stony Brook's football future:

2010 - South Florida - 54-14 L - Att: 40,000+, Payday - $350,000

2011 - Buffalo

2012 - Army

2013 - Boston College

One BCS game will be substantially more than SBU's buyout from the Big South when the CAA comes calling.
