I have never really followed AE baseball, so I am not clear on why they play a doubleheader on Saturday and the third game on Sunday in conference games. That must be pretty tiring for players and the second game of the doubleheader is only 7 innings.

They should be able to play Friday, Saturday and Sunday games for many of the schools. From Albany's perspective - Hartford, Vermont, Northeastern, Binghamton and Stony Brook are all teams that are within a reasonable driving distance where they should be able to support that schedule. If there is a rainout, you play a doubleheader on the following day, if the forecast calls for rain on Sunday, you play a doubleheader on Friday or Saturday.

reeder....A little history on America East baseball schedules. For many years it was a 4 game, 2 day, 2 doubleheaders (7 innings each). This is the first season that they have gone with 3 games. Some of the reasons for the current set-up......3 day series would be cost prohibitive for league schools, 3 games allows for more flexibility if there are rainouts, allows teams to schedule more non-league games which helps the league's RPI, allows for a 9-inning Sunday game which mimics both the AE playoff and NCAA playoff games. I really like this set-up. It also means that every team either wins or loses a series with each team....no more 2-2 records vs. league opponents.

The problem with college athletics for most people is seen in your posts - you say nothing about the fact that extending it to three days takes away another day of class time. Teams could (in theory anyhow) leave after classes on Friday to arrive that night, stay over, and then play Saturday-Sunday and leave after the single game on Sunday.
