2014 in review

With two women's and one men's basketball games left, it's been quite a year, which even the T-U couldn't ignore; four of their top ten sports stories of 2014 are about the Great Danes, and that's combining our two basketball teams into one story:

 

2. MBB and WBB reach the NCAAs again

7. Winning the Albany Cup again

10. UAlbany football turnaround

 

Union's NCAA crown at the top of the list

 

Even this leaves out the run of the Field Hockey team, softball in the NCAA again, and the hiring of a new Athletic Director.

The NCAA lacrosse game against Notre Dame was heartbreaking but being there and seeing so many little kids (on Long Island) pulling mightily for Albany was by far my favorite moment. It's still kind of a shock—for those of us who remember our college years as D-III—to see thousands wearing Albany apparel and cheering them on in a nationally televised game.

On Christmas Day Sportscenter was counting down a Top 50 plays of the year and I saw Albany on at around #22. Unfortunately it was Notre Dame's lax comeback. Haven't seen this listing online.
