What if you say no to the guarantee? Do you play the game on the road at the other place or do you basically forfeit your playoff chance?

I think bids aren't opened until after teams are selected, so you just go on the road. I know Colgate once travelled when they didn't submit a second-round bid.  Don't know what happens if there aren't enough bids, but for most schools (except in the great Northeast) it shouldn't be too hard to make the minimum.
