Great game played by Danes I do not remember the team playing zone at all this year I missed the 1st quarter vs Vermont did they come out in zone to start that game? They were in man to man even vs Maryland & Cornell

Played a lot of zone against Syracuse and Vermont.  Down low all they did is step aroung our guys and shoot.  We seem to be better in man.  Thus Cornell and Maryland and the other day where they stayed predominately in man.  Our guys seem to slow to step out to the guys coming around the corner when we are in the zone.  I think sometimes we play a mixture.

From an expert on Def in lacrosse>  "Zone defense in lacrosse is different from man-to-man defense in that, instead of guarding a particular player, each zone defender is responsible for guarding an area of the field, or “zone”, and any offensive player that comes into that area. Zone defenders move their position on the field in relationship to where the ball moves."  We do it a lot on LS close D...

I suppose I could have my head up my butt but........................

It’s actually easier for a kid like Ketner to play both sports.  He’s a role player, at best, for hoops.  He knows the system.   He isn’t expected to provide an impact.  If they want to keep him in scholly, I bet he’s listed in basketball as well.

Didn't think of that, so maybe.  Football requires LOTS of out of season weight training too.  Some interesting comments from others.  I do not follow basketball closely so don't have a lot of insight into any of that.

  3. My thoughts are that we played more Man Def. and  it helped.  It seems that every game that we have done that we have played great!  Gotta stay away from the zone.  Some of our kids just are too slow laterally to keep step with quick attacks and don't slide quickly enough.  No names BUT I think it is abvious to many of us.  They scored a couple against our kids because they were slow reacting.

I agree. I for one have no problem with the team playing two back to back FBS schools.  It'll be a good experience for the team and the program.  This spring ball is important. It'll help all of the new guys acclimate with the existing team culture and there are a bunch of new guys in Spring Ball camp.   Also a few JUCO players won't join the team until they graduate in May.   Pre-season camp should be great.

If the game continues in the way of the first quarter, many of us will asking why did Benson extend Scott's contract.  As much as I appreciated our past success by Scott, our future is looking like we are headed for the bottom of the canyon.

I think it is mostly a Def issue...  Went to more man and stopped them.

I agree, tough schedules can be good for team bonding if you win or bad for team frustrations if you lose.  I think Marr should also look at his horses he has for the next season as he schedules.  For example, in 2018 he had All Americans Fields and Nantihote among others playing so they were able to beat Cuse, Cornell, and march down to #2 Maryland and beat them as the #1 team for 7 weeks.  If he doesn't have nationally praised stars( and I don't see any as of now) on next years team, ease up on the schedule a bit.

Don't disagree.  BUt let's watch the freshman who started this past weekend,  Couple really good ones....... Silas Richmond is the real deal.  Got some good ones coming in too.   I always try to stay positive.   The next two weeks could tell us how the league goes...

OK I’ll join in on your conversation with yourself. Speaking of insanity, I was theire live & freezing of course and just re-watched, hoping somehow the result would be different 😜. Also, not sure I agree Saturday will be not pretty. I’m not predicting a win (I’m not that nuts); but let me say a few positive things about todays game.

First umass has played 3 games in the past 10 days, UA none. Umass jumps out 3-0 while UA still getting over no games lethargic. Pretty even after that lose by that same 3. Statistically pretty even overall, including only down 1 on ground balls. Even even on face-offs against the same guy who 70+% against UA last year. And if you re-watch the F/O violation at the ½, you will see 100% blown call (announcers will confirm—umass totally jumped early, UA guy never moved a muscle, umass awarded ball. Did not cost UA the game but would have flipped the f/o stat to UA +. )

Anyhow, back on track; discounting Cuse UA has played every game close against quality programs. Also, again discounting SU look at the # of upperclassmen & grad students & portal players vs UA’s predominantly freshman & sophomores.
The Defense has gotten better every game. At some point IMHO the offense will start to jell. So maybe not a win vs Maryland, but I’m just looking for the D to keep improving and the offense to start playing together Train Style.

I will not name a number but our players have GOT to get better - they - a couple keep allowing the attack from our opponents whom they are covering to get a step and then get around the corner and score.   There are guys who are better in my mind.  Carino had a stupid penalty last week so did not play today??

Agree with this "re-watch the F/O violation at the ½, you will see 100% blown call (announcers will confirm—umass totally jumped early, UA guy never moved a muscle, umass awarded ball. Did not cost UA the game but would have flipped the f/o stat to UA +. )"  I yelled it at the time.  Same thing happend in the Cornell game.....

Only lost Gbs by one and most definitely a couple awarded to mass in error IMHO.

Had 2 less turnovers overall; but our D caused 12, while only 5 caused by mass (meaning most of UA’s TO’s unforced—need to clean this up for sure.)

Had more shots & shots on goal; granted a lot were NOT quality shots as you said.
And I agree a very winnable game and agree the layoff part of the reason UA especially offensively was so poor.

Agree.  Most of our turnovers were unforced and lead to goals for them.  Somehow we are not getting them but the guys are fighting.  I just do notunderstand it..  The one penalty against us was by the offical 30 yards away and he turned his back ont he replay which CLEARLY showed no foul.... Why does this keep happening??? Officials are terrible in our league.

  9. We played poorly to say the least!!!!  Many unforced turnovers.........Same Def player let UM attack run around him and score three times - they left him in the game????  Off did NOT SHOOT the ball.  Kept trying plays that did not work.  Players seemed to be handcuffed by the Game plan.  Coaches can't possibly be trying new things still - thinking these non-league games don't mean much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Not sure why they kept taking Pucci out?????  We just did not take shots....................VERY poor game plan, very poor play - Maybe too much time between games??????

UMass was NOT a better team.  Again we were beat on ground balls.  Why it keeps happening is beyond me..  Coaches need to go off on the team maybe.....Not marr's style though.

Have no clue what to expect against Maryland...............

Many teams have not had the good fortunes UAlbany has had via our tournament run in 2018 and the efforts by our coach, which has resulted in a great schedule.  Furthermore, you over analyzed my intent, which was to share information/scores.

Not trying to disparage what you were saying I just do not agree with some of it.   Of course we have to wait and see how the rest of the season goes.  I think for us, these tough games makes us play better - helps the coaches better prepare with the kids they need to play.  Some who were getting lots of time last year and early thi year are not now becasue others are performing better.  Coaches have to make difficult decisions based on play on the field.  They can see who plays better against outstanding competition rather than against low level competition.  Guys can look really good against low level copetition who can not play well at all against tough competition.  From this point of view the tough schedule helps.

On the other hand when teams get a few wins they get a chip on their shoulder and may play better against better teams .  I think it comes down to a different philosophy of coaching.

Wins-losses mean something to the athletes playing in these early matches and their coaches whether it is a NEC team against a Patriot team, AE team against CAA team or a BIG10 against an ACC team.  These games are the proof that practices are yielding results or how a team compares from year to year.

Do you not think Saturday's game between Notre Dame and Maryland meant something to these teams .... triple OT .... Notre Dame 13 - Maryland 12, do you not thing the Great Danes are dreaming of the possibilities for next Saturday?

Perhaps, you look at a bunch of games and say, "So what".  I bet there are a bunch of student-athletes are saying "We won, we played well" or "We lost, what could we have done better."

Using Notre Dame - Maryland to prove your point does NOT prove it.  We are talking about playing VERY weak schedules- to build confidence????  NOT playing very tough teams - not sure that has the players looking at things differently.  Playing tough teams may!!!

Not sure what you are saying works with college kids "Perhaps, you look at a bunch of games and say, "So what".  I bet there are a bunch of student-athletes are saying "We won, we played well" or "We lost, what could we have done better."  Sorry.  don't see it that way against very weak teams.   Maybe you have a point BUT I think you are over-playing it.  Maybe in youth leagues or even HS.  Not so much in college sports.  There are few kids who don't know a team's schedule is weak.  I would guess most wish they were playing tougher teams.

    Maybe I am totally wrong...............
