UALBANY MEN’S BASKETBALL RECEIVES COMMITMENT FROM HIGH SCHOOL STAR

Albany, N.Y. – University at Albany men’s basketball coach Will Brown announced on Monday, Nov. 15 that South Jersey high school standout Brian Connelly has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Great Danes in 2005-06.

Connelly, a 6-foot-8, 215-pound forward from Audubon, N.J. (Camden Catholic H.S.), averaged 15.0 points and 11.0 rebounds as a junior. The Fighting Irish reached the South Jersey Group IV Parochial A championship. Connelly’s team won the Olympic Conference National Division title with a 21-6 record. He was a member of the Camden Courier Post’s All-Parochial second team.

"He has a great combination of size and skill," Brown said. "He can score in the low post and shoot from three-point range. Brian plays for a good coach and a good program, and is use to winning. His versatility and competitiveness will make us better."

UAlbany begins its 2004-05 schedule on Friday, Nov. 19 with a non-league contest at Sacred Heart. Tip-off is 7:00 p.m.

Two thoughts:

1. This kid sounds similar to Brent Wilson. Good post player, good perimeter shooter, 6'8"...

2. I guess they didn't get the kid from Chicago to sign. I think that was mentioned on another post on this board. I would think they'd do a single press release for both players?

In today's Gazette, Brown says 'With all the players we have back next season, I thinkg I'm going to wait until spring to sign our last recruit.

The conference will lose a lot of players, and I think I can afford to wait and see what kind of player we will need for next season. I'm thinking about going after a 6-5 or 6-6 wing player. We have plenty of guards'

They got Connelly by recruiting him hard early, and offering the scholly early when he was under everyone's radar.

That's surprising considering the following year it will only be Dyson, B. Wilson and Connelly to fill the center and power forward spots. I thought they were going after another big guy.
