From today's Providence Journal, hope we get at least this much soon.

Love this quote, but from the wrong AD McElroy:

URI will:

• Refurbish the East Grandstand bleacher seats, most likely with a vinyl wrap, in time for the 2005 season.

"No splinters in the butt any more," said Tom McElroy, director of athletics.

Also: "The state university should have venues that support the communities of the state. They should be our front porches," he said.

Updating Meade, he added, is "an obligation to the citizens of the state, not just the 80 young men who play football here."

For $2 million, UA can do a lot.

1. Move the home side of the field across to the visitors side and add nice bleachers. Moving the bleachers close to the field for better viewing.

2. Add an enclosed area near the bleachers for restrooms and food.

3. Make the field turf so that it can be used for lax, field hockey and football.

Those changes would give UA one of the best facilities in the NEC and save a boatload of $.

Can't move the bleachers closer until you first build a new running track somewhere else - in the master plan, where the old field hockey pitch was, at right angles running toward the Dutch Quad lot. The track looks to be wearing out, to the point it will have to be replaced soon anyway - what is it, about 17-18 years old now?

A cinder-block building for toilets/concessions could be used for equipment storage the other nine months/year.
