UALBANY ATHLETES COMPETE AT FIRST DAY OF IC4A/ECAC CHAMPIONSHIPS

Boston, Mass. - Junior Burnett set a school record in the 200-meter dash at the first day of the IC4A Indoor Track and Field Championship, held at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center on Saturday, March 4. Alyssa Lotmore took fifth in the 5,000m at the first day of the women's ECAC Championship at the Reggie Lewis Center.

Burnett, who earned conference honors in the 55m dash at the America East Conference championship, qualified for the event finals in both the 200m and 55m dash. He covered the 200m in 21.56 seconds to eclipse the previous standard of 21.75, set by freshman Pat Weider at the conference championship two weeks ago. Weider also advanced in the 200m with a time of 21.66 seconds. Burnett's performance of 6.39 seconds in the 55m dash was one-hundredth of a second off school-record pace.

Also advancing to the finals for UAlbany were two-time defending IC4A 800m champion Gered Burns (1:49.08), as well as freshman Joe Greene, who ran the 400m in a season best 47.63. Greene anchored the 4x400 relay which advanced in a school-record pace of 3:13.20. Weider, Burnett and Stephen Evans teamed with Greene on the relay.

Lotmore turned in a fifth-place showing in the 5,000m, finishing in a time of 16:46.69. The junior eclipsed her own UAlbany standard, set earlier this season, by nine seconds. Her fifth-place finish in the finals is the first time Lotmore has scored in an indoor ECAC Championship.

Freshman twins Jessica Ortman and Jenna Ortman advanced to the finals of the 800m and 1,000m, respectively. Anisha Andrews anchored the women's 4x400 relay which set a new school record of 3:51.59. She teamed with Melissa Lee, Jenn Gurrant and twin sister Adanna Andrews in the event preliminaries.

Fantastic weekend results. UA continues to be the only team to make indoor T&F a spectator sport worth the price of admission! The 3:09+ 4X4 win vaults the men's team to national levels! Didn't make to the indoor dance but it sure sets the stage for outdoor. How about our twin sensations, all of the frosh for that matter! Good things for years to come.

A few other results:

Jess finishes 5th in the 800!

Jenn wins the 1,000!

team finishes 16th

Gilman makes finals of the TJ!

Burns 3 peat in the 800!

I was curious about the guidelines for qualifying for the 'indoor dance.' I have been on google, but there is limited information on indoor track. Can complete teams qualify, or is it based upon individual/relay efforts? Also, when and where, and what exactly is it?

BTW, it is nice to see the university evolve on this athletic front.

There is a team score but qualification is strictly by individual performance. Indoor is unique in that only 12 - 16 in each event get in based strictly on performance, not place or region. It is generally harder to qualify for indoor nationals than for the Olympic trials. Outdoors allows for a "first round" qualifier based on performance or first place at conference championships similar to bball. Regional place (top 5) advances the individual to the NCAA Champs where again there is team score.

The article pasted above doesn't mention that Joe Greene ran even faster in the 400M final the next day, setting a school record of 47.41, which qualifies provisionally for the NCAAs. That's a very fast time.

There are no captions, but if you look through, you'll see pictures of Gered Burns winning the 800, the 4x400 relay team and others.

And Joe Greene is a freshman.  This kid is going to run in the low 46's outdoors.  Unreal in the Northeast.

Are any of you guys T&F alum?  Seems to be some T&F knowledge.  What era?

Yeah, I'm a T&F alum. Actually more of an XC alum, under R. Keith Munsey, or as he liked to refer to himself, GLC (Greatest Living Coach). My name is a clue to my era.
