This Week's Track & Field Results

Congratulations to the men's and women's track team for their first-place finishes at this weekend's AE championships. I was particularly impressed with the women's results. After the first day of competition the women were only in 4th place. They must have really finished hard to advance to first place. The men were also outstanding as they increased their lead over the other close placers by a substantial margin.

 

Once again, kudos are due to another outstanding track and field season.

the men shattered the Meet Record with 268 total points. They almost doubled the 2nd place New Hampshire's point score of 154.

 

They had the individual champion in the 100, 200, 400, 400 Hurdles, 800, 3000 Steeplechase, Long Jump, Triple Jump, & Javelin. They also won the 4x100 relay and the 4x400 relay.

 

They had the runner-up in the 100, 200, 800, 5000, 110 Hurdles, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Pole Vault, Shot Put, & the 4x800 relay.

Thanks for the summary of the events. I did not do a comparison of the men't results this weekend with those of previous years. I did notice that the men beat their nearest rival, UNH, by a 2-1 margin, and I cannot recall a bigger discrepancy than this year.

 

UA should be very proud of the results from this year's team.

Baltimore, Md. - For the second-straight season, the University at Albany has taken home both the men's and women's team titles at the America East Outdoor Track & Field Championship at UMBC on Sunday afternoon.

The Great Danes put together the most dominating performance in meet history as the Albany men's 268 points set a meet record and were 114 points ahead of second-place New Hampshire (154). UMBC (113) and Binghamton (100) also topped the 100-point plateau in third and fourth, respectively. Boston University (82), Stony Brook (57), Maine (45), Vermont (25) and Hartford (11) round out the nine-team field.

Albany, led by head coach Roberto Vives, garnered Coaching Staff of the Year honors as they piloted the Danes to their third-straight outdoor title and four of the last five. Sophomore Joe Greene and senior Junior Burnett were crucial in the Danes title run as well.

Greene was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer as he set a meet record in the 400 with an NCAA regional qualifying time of 47.09, won the 400 hurdles (52.95) and also ran the anchor leg of Albany's first-place 4x400 relay team. Burnett took home the Coaches' Award, given to the athlete that tallies the most overall points, as he scored 23 points for Albany with three first-place finishes (100, 4x100 relay, 4x400) and one second-place finish (200).

UMBC's Keith Brown was honored as the Most Outstanding Rookie and UNH's Reed Liset was tabbed the Most Outstanding Field Performer. Brown tied the meet record in the 110 hurdles (14.46), finished eighth in the 400 hurdles and third in the 4x100 relay. Liset took the men's discus (52.75m) and hammer (56.24m) titles.

On the women's side, the Great Danes scored 162 points, outdistancing second-place New Hampshire (156 points) by just six points. Boston University finished third with 139.5 points, followed by Vermont (110.5) and Binghamton (101) in fourth and fifth, respectively. Maine (73), UMBC (70), Stony Brook (31) and Hartford (14) round out the nine-team field.

Albany won the team title, but did not garner any of the meet's individual awards. Head Coach Casey Carroll and Wildcats garnered Coaching Staff of the Year accolades for their impressive second-place finish.

Binghamton's Kim Williams was honored as the Most Outstanding Track Performer with first-place finishes in the 200, 4x100 relay and 4x400 relay. Ashley Fauntleroy of UMBC won the shot put and discus and came in third in the hammer as she was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer.

Ebony Cotterrell of Boston University won the 100-meter dash, finished second in the 200 and fourth in the 4x100 en route to Most Outstanding Rookie honors. Despite failing to win an event, Vermont's Jan Carlson put together solid performances all over the track and field to garner the Coaches' Award. Carlson finished seconds in the 100, third in the 200, the 4x100 and the pole vault, fifth in the long jump and sixth in the triple jump.
