Lot of talk on Hansen's board about Marist and Duquesne looking at the Pioneer League. Why would they want to go to the Pioneer League? Academics? They will not be full time members of the NEC - just associate members like UA. The MAAC will still be their primary conference. How about the travel as they are so spread out in the Pioneer League

I think Hansen is Midwest-based and a lot of the posters may be from there. A lot of the PFL schools were much higher-ranked at one time (Drake, Dayton, Butler) and have better name recognition than most of the NEC teams - SHU, Monmouth and RMU have only had football for about ten years, Wagner and SFU were D-III. Marist also has a much higher opinion of their own academics than of the NEC, some of their fans think they'd fit in the Patriot.

According to Brian DePasquale, UA spends $90K on football aid, which the MAAC and Pioneer don't allow. Not only is this a potential impediment to a PFL-NEC bowl game, but it also might explain Duquesne's hesitance to join the NEC.

Dayton (closest PFL school to Pittsburgh) only flies to two league games per year. Does that cost them 90 grand?

Like it or not, the PFL is cost containment football.

On second thought, maybe Dayton didn't make any trips via airline during the 2003 season (don't know about Drake trip). The coach cancelled plans to fly into Charlotte for the Davidson game and put the team on a bus.

It looks like San Diego might be their only expensive road trip so far (don't think they've played at Jacksonville yet).
