Coundoul makes Senegal's African Cup of Nations roster

Recommended Posts

The Senegal national team has chosen Colorado Rapids goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul to be on its roster for the upcoming African Cup of Nations in Ghana starting January 20.

Coundoul was with Senegal for two recent friendlies in Paris, France, and he made his Senegalese national team debut last weekend in a 3-2 win against Mali. He played 45 minutes. He impressed enough in training and against Mali to take one of the three goalkeeper spots for the African Cup of Nations Tournament.

Senegal, currently the No. 38 ranked national team in the world by FIFA,will face Tunisia, South Africa and Angola in African Cup of Nations Group play.

Coundoul will be battling for the No. 2 goalkeeper spot for Senegal. Veteran goalkeeper Tony Sylva is currently Senegal's No. 1 goalkeeper. Sylva plays for French club Lille.

Coundoul started all 30 games for the Rapids this year, posting a 1.08 goals against average and nine shutouts in his first year as an MLS starter.

Coundoul came to the United States from Senegal in 1997, settling in New York City. After a stellar high school career, Coundoul starred for the University at Albany.
