When one browses all of the schools listed in those polls, does anyone else feel like "damn, our school and its profile should be able to compete someday with all of these schools and be a consistent top 10 team." (or something along those lines). That's how I feel. I know we need the full scholarships and stadium, but with those things (and those are big things), along with perhaps a different conference affiliation, can we look forward to seeing us being a major state school player in what was formerly known as Division I-AA? It seems like our profile is more like UMASS, UNH, and Delaware than any of the other schools -- academically and athletically.

Am I misguided or just too hopeful (or both)?

No, you are spot on.. We will get the schollys and the stadium.

Hopefully much sooner (now) than later (10 years). That's my only apprehension concerning them. It's very important to get them now though, in order to keep pace with others progress.

Our University is extremely similar in profile, although we have a portfolio of top national academic programs, a world leading program in Nano, and we are a top research institution. We may have a higher profile than those other schools, all things considered.

But, when we do have the stadium and schollys, watch out FCS.

( Although this shouldn't be a part of this discussion, I think if UAlbany went FBS down the road, we'd do well and would surpass Buffalo fairly quickly. This, of course, is WAY down the road, and we would need leaders that had the vision and were aggressive and determined enough to make it happen.)

Here's a question for everyone:

At what point does the University (Athletic Department) need to put out a public "plan of attack"?

Here's what our goals for the athletic program are (maybe just football) and here's how we plan on doing it.

We've been speculating for years on this board and other places about what the goals are. But does anyone really know for sure what the plans are?

My thoughts on Buffalo -- oh, and by the way, GREAT WIN FOR THE BULLS ON SATURDAY OVER TEMPLE!! ONE OF TOP HIGHLIGHTS ON ESPN SATURDAY NIGHT!! -- are that Buffalo probably had more money because of its large endowment from its days at as very fine private college. Buffalo has a pretty nice chunk of change at its disposal ... . Whether or not that helped fund its football program and its advancement into the MAC and Division I, I don't know.

Does anyone think our path - and perhaps UMASS, Montana, Delaware, UNH, etc. -- will be what was formerly called Division I-A? I know many posters on here would rather win championships at what as formerly called I-AA than struggle like Buffalo did for several years at I-A. Given the rumored stadium seating capacity, it doesn't look like we're going anywhere anytime soon as far as I-A goes. But that's okay.

As far as the future, and growing our fan base, the problem, in my view, in this area isn't potential fans to come to the games (look at all the high school games on Friday nights that get several thousand fans). Rather, we need to develop the feeling in this metro area that UAlbany is this region's only Division I-A football team, which people care about. Don't cheer for Syracuse. Cheer for UAlbany (even if you're at St. Rose, Siena, Skidmore, or RPI!). And all it takes is a win over a school like Army, Syracuse, etc., and we might really draw some fans. Even though Syracuse football sucks, I'd absolutely love to see us schedule them (if they would agree) on our football schedule. Any chance?

In sum, it's going to take lots of marketing to get us to the point where we are drawing 15-30K+, but the football fans ARE out there!!

We can definitely play Syracuse if we get the scholly level up. Northeastern plays at Cuse this weekend.

Our athletic department has zero marketing at this point. Probably because they don't have the money to do it, but CDTA buses should be loaded wth UAlbany football ads. Pictures of players, etc...

What do you think that costs?
