Rodger Wyland reports that Paul Layton, Burnt Hills senior QB and punter, has accepted a full scholly to Albany, saying we expect him to take over the punting and maybe place-kicking.

B-H lost the Class A state championship to Sweet Home in the Carrier Dome 35-28 last fall

T-U stats , though a Saratogian story said he weighs 195, not 210

Rodger Wyland reports that Paul Layton, Burnt Hills senior QB and punter, has accepted a full scholly to Albany

First team All NYS kicker (Class A).

Camera sucks but this kid can kick:

Averaged 40+ yards per punt in high school last year. That's a need we have to fill. He also indicates in the comments that PL schools were also recruiting him for QB. Looks like a good pick up.

Layton rushed for 1,196 yards and scored 20 touchdowns, while also passing for 1,242 yards and 13 touchdowns. He became the first Section II quarterback to ever surpass 1,000 yards in both categories in the same season.

"That’s never been done by a quarterback in our area before," said Burnt Hills head coach Matt Shell. "He’s a multidimensional player. He played with poise but he is also very humble."

Layton finished his career as the best extra-point kicker in Section II history, booting 151 tries and seven field goals through the uprights during his three-year varsity career. He connected on 68 extra points and three field goals in 2008. A fantastic punter, Layton is drawing college interest for his special teams exploits as well.

He is the younger brother of WNYT, Channel 13 reporter Jessica Layton. Jessica Layton sometimes sings the national anthem at UAlbany athletic events.

EDIT - Paul Layton was the Times Union Large School Offensive Player of the Year for 2008.

You are correct there are no partials in FBS only 85 full.

In FCS 63 full schollys are allowed that can be divided as partials between a max of 85 players

Wyland explained at 11 that what he actually got from SU and Pitt were offers to be a 'preferred walkon' with the opportunity to earn a scholarship.

Layton will be interviewed on Big Board Sports at 11:15 Sunday night.

I'm really surprised that he didn't take them.

Getting a preferred walk-on as a kicker at an FBS school is a great thing as scholarships for kickers are few and far between.

I suspect he'll have more of a chance to play other positions at UA than just special teams. He is clearly a great athlete and its a great pickup for us. Not only do we get a great player, but we get arguably the best (and most successful) offensive player in Section II in recent years which will hopefully create some local fan buzz.
