Hofstra explores leaving the CAA

Hofstra will explore moving its intercollegiate athletic program out of the southern-based Colonial Athletic Association, persons familiar with the athletic program said Thursday.

Hofstra did not say what has prompted its exploration, but it appears the university would prefer to have more of a northeast profile. The Atlantic-10 is Hofstra's first choice, those close to the situation said, but no openings currently exist in that New England-based group.

Take it with a gain of salt because the writer is notoriously anti-Hofstra and especially anti-Hofstra football.

But this, combined with (1) Fordham leaving the Patriot Leauge (looking mroe and more likely), (2) SBU's contract in the Big South running out in 2012; (3) our contract in the NEC running out in 2010 and (4) the overall decline in athletic spending and travel costs......and we could be looking at the perfect storm to create a new Northern Football Conference.

Apparently this actually has some legs.

Hofstra University is seriously investigating the possibility of leaving the Colonial Athletic Association and its first choice is to join the Atlantic 10.

What's the chance of them coming back into the AE as the tenth member? Any doubt that the AE would take them in a heartbeat?

The other article says they have no interest in the America East.

My real interest is in who the CAA replaces Hofstra with.

Interesting that the Post knocks Fordham a bit in the article. My first inclination would be that Fordham would try and get that CAA spot and leave the Atlantic 10 if there is a spot available. Unfortunately for UA, we are not getting Hofstra's spot in the CAA if it becomes available. I guarantee you that Fordham and SB would get first shot at it.
