UAlbany Student-Athletes Join Movember Cause

ALBANY, N.Y.- University at Albany student-athletes and staff members across several sports have joined together to support “Movember,” a cause to raise awareness and funding for cancers and mental health concerns that effect men.

“Movember” is a term combining “mustache,” and “November.” Men participating in the Movember movement shave on Oct. 31, and grow mustaches throughout the month of November to show support for men’s health causes, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health.

“The number of people getting involved at UAlbany has grown over the years,” said men’s basketball co-captainSam Rowley. “It’s great to be able to grow the cause here, because it’s so popular in Australia.”

Thirty men in Melbourne, Australia began Movember in 2003. In 2012, 1,127,152 people worldwide registered as “Mo Bros.” As of 2012, 21 countries participate in Movember, helping raise over $147 million dollars last year alone.

This year, more than 20 male student-athletes are participating in Movember, including men’s basketball players Luke Devlin, Peter Hooley, Mike Rowley, Sam Rowley and Reece Williams; men’s soccer players Kit Alexieff, Tim Allen, Dan Christiansen, Thomas Manz, Ivan Martinez, Dominic McGarr, Pomare Te Anau andBrandon Wilson; men’s track & field athlete Matt Catera, athletic trainer Anthony Benyarko and assistant men’s soccer coach Tim Hart.

“Our goal is definitely to have other students and athletes join,” said Hooley. “Tim Allen [men’s soccer goalkeeper] really helped get the sports teams together this year.”

“Dom (Dominic McGarr) and Pom (Pomare Te Anau) did it together their freshmen year,” said men’s soccer co-captain Thomas Manz. “They definitely think it was the mustaches that helped us win on Saturday [in the America East quarterfinals against Vermont].”

When asked who has the best mustache, all parties were in agreement.

“It’s not really about the mustache, but maybe at the end of the month we’ll look around at the group and decide,” said Hooley. “We just want to raise awareness and do what we can to help beat cancer.”

The group has started an official Movember donation page, which can be found here.
