Up from 7th place last year. UA won 3 championships, only New Hampshire and Northeastern won more. Because of the scoring and sports won we landed in fifth.

Boston U. Wins Commissioner's Cup

Boston University has been awarded the 2003-04 Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup it was announced today by Chris Monasch, Commissioner of America East. This is the third-consecutive year that the Terriers have received this award. The Commissioner’s Cup annually recognizes the strongest athletic program in America East as determined by a scoring system which rewards a school for success both during the regular season and at championship competition in the conference’s 22 sports.

Boston University totaled 383 points to outdistance second-place finisher University of Maine, which had 344 points. Northeastern University was third with 333 points, followed by Binghamton University (326), University at Albany (322), University of New Hampshire (314), Stony Brook University (266), UMBC (265), University of Hartford (208), and University of Vermont (203).

 

Boston University’s point total was bolstered by championships in women's soccer and women's tennis. In addition, the Terriers were runners-up in women's basketball, women's golf, women's lacrosse and softball. The women's soccer and men's basketball teams were regular-season champions.

 

Maine, which enjoyed its highest finish in the 15-year history of the award, won championships in women's basketball and softball and had runners-up finishes in field hockey, women's soccer, men's basketball and baseball.

 

Northeastern had a conference-best five champions. The Huskies' field hockey, women's swimming and diving, women's indoor track and field, men's outdoor track and field and women's outdoor track and field teams were all victorious.

 

Binghamton, which improved five places from 2002-03, won championships in men's soccer and men's tennis and had runners-up finishes in men's swimming and diving, men's golf and men's lacrosse.

 

Albany (men's indoor track and field, women's golf and men's lacrosse) and New Hampshire (men's cross country, women's cross country, volleyball and women's lacrosse) also won multiple championships.

 

Each of the 10 member institutions won at least one championship. Stony Brook won the baseball championship. UMBC won the men's swimming and diving championship in its first year in the conference. Hartford won the men's golf championship. Vermont won its second-straight men's basketball championship.

 

The Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup is named in honor of the first commissioner of America East. Haskell served as commissioner of the conference from 1987 until his retirement in 1997.

 

The scoring system for the Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup is as follows: In sports where regular-season round robin competition is conducted, the first-place institution in the final standings receives four points times the total number of teams involved in conference play. The second-place institution receives four less points; third place receives eight less points, and so on. Additionally, the America East (tournament) champion receives two points times the total number of teams participating in the championship. The second-place institution receives two less points; third place receives four less points and so on down to the last-place institution which receives two points.

 

In sports where regular-season round robin competition is not conducted (cross country, golf, tennis, track and field, swimming and diving), the first place institution at the America East championship receives two points times the total number of teams participating in the championship. The second place institution receives two less points; third place gets four less points and so on down to the last place team which receives two points.
