1. Sorry guys, after reading my post I realize that I now have become no better then the dribble posted on the Siena board.  I apologize for bringing that junk over here and I will try and keep the UA board at the higher standard then that of our friends to the north.

    13799

    daneguy,

Comeone friend, the Siena win wasn't a quality win since they weren't/aren't a quality team. :D Also tread lightly into that hornets nest....they are really agitated by us stealing some of their luster and taking away some of their potential fan base. If you simply mention that you are a UA fan they are gona come out of the woodworks. There is only about 2 guys there who know what they are talking about, the rest are just repeating the points the smart one's made. There is strength in number.

  2. Jon,

Allot of those posts on the Siena board were directed to me. And Tony is the worst of them all, attacking me personally and not even having the common courtesy to spell my name right. I used to think he was an upstanding guy be he is no different then the rest of those f’losers over there. I’m actually not gona post there for a while, since I’ve probably worn out my welcome and as soon as they see my name in a post they all pile on. What’s even funnier is how they are ALL predicting that Siena will make us (UA) their bitches come November. If by “some” chance we win we should all band together go over there and don’t let them live it down. I used to also say that I wish them luck except for when they play UA…..Well I hope they get crushed every single game out, by who ever they play. They are the enemy in my book now, and I will never root for them again.

  3. Hey...someone get me a sponsor...I have no problem making a career out of correcting Siena fans.

Man...are they really that "chip" on the shoulder oriented.

    THE CATHOLIC COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIPS?

Yep, and UA played in the Tangerine Bowl....against UCF.  Guess we are a DI football power worth remembering now.

    FORDIE....FORDIE....I want my BCS tickets.

    AGAIN....THE CATHOLIC COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIPS?

Did that feature a split squad between the "beloved" apostles and the "agnostics."

Man...sure hope the scribes had enough papyrus for that one...must have been a barn burner.

ARE WE TALKING ABOUT THE CATHOLIC COLLEGE CHAMPIONSHIPS.....

Did they have four regions: The Dominicans, The Jesuits, et al. :D

    13775

BWWWAHAHAHAHHAHA....then nuns were bumpin and grindin as cheerleaders.

  4. Those are two of the most bitter letters to the editor I have ever seen.

    13745

I feel the same way. And not addressing the actual comments from the letters, I was actually surprised (you would think that I might have learned not to be by now) that the TU printed them...let alone two of them. I don't have a problem at all with rebutal letters to the editor, but these were more of a complaining/whinning type as opposed to relaltively well thought out letters that newspapers tend to print. Sort of surprised me.

    13748

I am yet to be surprised by the "BS" the TU continues to publish.

    13749

    danefan,

Those letters were a rebuttal to a UA fan’s letter. They did print a UA fans latter. If they had only printed a Siena letter and not a single UA letter then your point would be well taken. Is this the hottest this rivalry has ever been or was there a time where it was hotter?

  5. bosiydid,

With all due respect, I really like your posts and your energy.

The Danes had their first true DI team last year. Look at the past UA rosters, heck 3 years ago we had the famous "four on the floor" finish at Hartford, Jon Iati played 40 minutes + a game, (yes 40 + minutes per game) and walk - ons were playing major minutes. Do you think that epitomizes being a true DI team?

In the last two seasons we have had a full roster of DI type talent - all I stated was lets just look at the present two years. No one can take away the successes of the past that Siena has had but they have to stop living in the past and realize there is another DI team in town..

Just look at all the great, well deserved praise and compliments placed on Coach McCaffrey - he took a program that was decimated and improved it by 9 wins in one year.

Well each of the past two years the Danes have improved by 8 wins, shouldn't we be excited about that?

I try to live my life in the present.

    13747

    Patch,

Just because a team doesn’t play well or doesn’t have the players does not excuse them from being terrible. The growing pains that we were experiencing in our first few seasons were to be expected. But when talking about a program or club one must take into account the entire body of work. Look at the Atlanta or Charlotte in the NBA, they are terrible teams but they are going through necessary growing pains just like UA did at their level.

I have made your exact point on the Siena board a million times. Siena fans need to realize that they are no longer the only D1 team in town. The bristle at that notion and continually try to drag us down. But as we accumulate more wins and success at this level, they will have no choice but to come around. It must be HARD for them to accept that in only 7 seasons we’ve been to the NCAA’s and built this thing as fast as we have. Man I’m looking forward to the Siena game next season.

    War Pepsi!

  6. bosiydid,

I know you have defended us over there; I've seen your posts.

I also respect your comments here; you've gotten up to speed very fast over here, and I admire your respect for our team.

I agree with your assessment that we don't get enough respect over there, and I think your reasons partially explain that lack.

I have also defended our position over there numerous times, and I've slowly come to the realization that it often doesn't matter, but then I think it's not really my problem. Why should I expect respect for my opinion and my team, the enemy, when they don't often respect themselves?

    13743

I appreciate the kind words. If I could just add one more thing to my prior post…..I said that our credibility suffers when we look like a bunch of cool-aid drinking homers what I forgot to mention is that it’s exactly how I see many of the posters on the Siena board. And I don’t want us (UA fans) to be like them. Because that’s exactly what many over there are, cool-aid drinking homers.

  7. . . . I would like to thank all the dane fans with some persepective for posting here, I hope that the Siena fans that lose their way from Loudenville onto this website see that not all dane fans lose perspective and for the most part we understand that we have had small wins in the grand scheme of college basketball, but they are HUGE in terms of our program. . . .

    13738

I think one major reason why the fans here on this forum have reacted the way we do is because we remember the bad years. A record of 5-23 was not great, but the program and its fans persevered. We handled our adversity quite well. Part of the reason for our attitude was the strong belief that our program would move solidly forward because of our coach who was learning the ropes and because of the information we had on incoming recruits. Part of the reason was just our nature.

Two years ago you did not find nasty attacks against Brown or the players on this board. We all knew what to expect realistically, and we were positive about signs of progress we detected.

Compare the posts on this board, however, with what was going on over on the other board. Not only were the posters over there criticizing and/or defending to the hilt evry move their coach and their team members were making, they were savagely attacking each other. It was getting really cannibalistic over there.

I cannot tell you how glad I am to pursue UAlbany athletics. I like the personnel and team members (and it's not just restricted to the men's basketball team), I like our fans. Thank goodness we have this forum to gather information and show our appreciation.

    13741

    olddog,

I would just like to reiterate that since I found this board and the Siena board there have been many times that I had to defend my beloved Danes over there. I feel like most other Danes fans, that they continually try to belittle and put down own program and it seems that their only reason for doing so is that we’ve only been D1 for 7 seasons, and haven’t really had the time to put together a solid track record. But I think where our credibility suffers is when we look like a bunch of cool-aid drinking homers and unwilling/unable to really put it into perspective.

  8. bosiydid - There will always be fans who want to compare greatest accomplishments and might lose perspective. Siena has "had" good/ outstanding seasons and successes in the past but we must live in the present.......

Lets look at the immediate present the last two full seasons.

Siena 2004/05 RPI 297  6-24 overall  4-14 in MAAC play

            2005/06 RPI 125 15-13 overall 10-8 in MAAC play

Last two years avg. RPI 211, 21-37 overall,  14-22 in MAAC play

Remember according to the RPI the MAAC was a tougher league this year,  last year the AE was rated higher then the MAAC. Also remember Siena is the self proclaimed "Crown Jewel of the MAAC" or the "Gold Standard"

UA    2004/05  RPI 195  13-15 overall 9-9 in AE play

            2005/06  RPI 119  21-11 overall 13-3 in AE play

Last two years avg. RPI 157, 34-26 overall, 22-12 in AE play

These are the present facts, whatever plays out in the future so be it, but in the last two seasons the Great Danes have been the most productive of the two teams end of story.

Over the last two seasons which Hoop program has been the soundest.

    13732

    Patch,

No question that the last two season have been relatively good/great for UA and terrible/surprisingly good for Siena. But take that RPI and blow it out to 7 season or even 5. The picture changes dramatically. Hence my point that we need to be better then them consistently in order to rise to the top on the local hoops scene. I can’t believe that I’m defending Siena, and I’m the guy who wants to crush them when we play them.

    13736

You cant justify blowing out the 5-7 year range. We were essentially a DII team playing DI games on the road. Right now is the present...the present says we are a better squad. Now, you can argue your point in 5-7 years by looking back...but you can say, with a clear head, that UA is on A MAJOR UPSWING....one that cant be denied, but inherently is, by Siena fans.

    13739

It would be simply foolish of you to discount what Siena has accomplished. We have not accomplished nearly as much but that’s because we haven’t been around that long. There is nothing wrong with that statement. We do not have much history at the D1 level, and there is nothing wrong with that. In 5 – 10 years that will obviously change and we will have something to look back on, but as of right now no question they are the more accomplished program in the grand scheme of things. I can absolutely justify blowing it out 5-7 years! You cannot take the good and discount the bad; we were a D1 program that was very green, coming in fresh. Yes we struggled but you cannot throw that out the window and say well we just turned D1. We are comparing programs and not seasons. If you want to compare programs they are more accomplished. If you want to compare seasons the last two we were better but not by a mile.

  10. Siena fans have every reason to remember the Stanford game. It was a great victory for them and their program. It doesn't mean, however, that it has to be a great victory for everybody, and it doesn't mean that the victories UAlbany fans have in their memories should be less valid.

For me, our first entry into the magical world of the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament has to be one of the greatest memories I have of Great Danes basketball. For us, it is great because it took our program only 7 years to make it. For us, it is great because we were competing for only 65 spots in a field of approximately 334 teams in the country.

By the way, does anyone know how many D I teams there were in the country 17 years ago? I know that in recent years approximately 4-8 new D I teams come into existence.

As far as the "gold-standard" program of the Capital District is concerned, I would hardly call records of 6-24 and 15-13 in the last two years for an already-established program such a model to emulate. And I'm quite sure that you will have Siena defenders blaming it all on Lanier, at the same time some of their fans won't give us any slack for our poor record in the early Division I days.

KingDane, you're correct when you call a lot of their fans big whiners. Compare the comments pasted on the respective boards when we were going through our 5-23 record the year before they went 6-24.

I'm happy for the progress they've made under their new coach, but I have a right to be very proud of the greater progress our program has made in the last few years.

    13724

    Guys,

I’ve had numerous arguments with Siena fans on their board, as much as I love UA, their win over Stanford was more significant then our loss to UCONN. Any one who doesn’t see it that way has to be a major homer. Any team that makes it out of the first round of the NCAA especially after being a huge underdog has to be a significant accomplishment. With that being said, I agree that there are allot of whiner on the Siena side. As far as the local college hoops scene they are still the top dog. The gap might be closing but they are still a more accomplished team then we are, after all we haven’t been around D1 long enough. We need to keep this season in perspective; if we go out and have this level of success consistently and more importantly beat them at the Pepsi then we will rise to their level on the local scene. If you don’t think they are still the top program around then why do we UA fans or allot of us at least constantly compare ourselves to them.

  11. My theory...

The point guard position on 06/07 looks a lot like it did in 05/06. (a combination of Jamar, Lillis and Iati).

A guy like this or Knight is red shirted next year.  Practices with the team for the entire season and then with a year under their belt,  picks-up a large chunk of Jamar's minutes in 07/08 and 08/09.  This keep's experience at the point guard position for at least three more years instead of two.

    13695

I’m intrigued. Would he be coming in as a junior or sophomore?

  12. Purple and gold got blacked out in NCAAs

Haven't they worn black for a couple of years? I wonder where Tony's been?

    13662

Haha, I thought the same thing when I read the article. They've been black probably before Kermit ever heard of UAlbany. And Tony was even a student here up to no more than 2 years ago. Way to identify yourself as a bandwagoner Tony...lol.

I personally don't mind them. Would rather have gold as home and black w/ purple trim for away than white for home and purple for away.

    13663

Anything but purple. I love the black uni's!

  13. As always you can take these rankings with several grains of salt but hoopscoop gives both Gifford and Yocum the same ranking.

    109.    ALBANY (8 Points)..........3 Recruits..........2.7 Talent Rating Average Per Recruit..........America East Conference..........(3) Brett Gifford, 6'11, C, Rock Bridge (H.S.) MO; (3) Mike Yocum, 6'8, C, Merion Station (Episcopal Academy) PA; (2) Michael Knight, 6'3, 2G, St. Petersburg (JC) FL.

    13652

Any idea where Reid Anderson is? The higher the number the better?

  14. Yocum is in very good company

    Andrew Ott, Villanova

    Carrington, Lehigh

Pettis Considering Prep Schools but highly rated and has three schools offering

Sims, Couldn't find anything about him

Next season will see the Battle of the bigs with Gifford, Yocum, Covington, and Connelly.

    13645

Man we have awsome size for the next few years. But it's not just size they are skilled big men. Should be fun to watch. When is the earliest we can see the team practice/play?

  15. Is the Pepsi a privately built arena?  I don't think so--

    13643

No I belive the county built the Pepsi. I'm kind of new to the college ball scene but is this rivalry between Seina and Albany the hottest it's ever been? Can you guys imagine the Pepsi next year? I mean I want them to win every game except for the game against us. They are a local team and cheer for them when they aren't playing us. But I wouldn't mind if we stuck it to em good next year.

  16. It's been a busy day there today. Mostly my doing I fear!

    13620

Nope, I am sure I also was part of pissing them off and I'll let someone else correct their errors today. Monday was enough when one of their fans got me going with some ridiculous comparison of how Albany would do against Marist, Manhattan and Iona as opposed to Siena who would win 3 out of 5 vs. those 3 schools except for the FACT they lost 5 out of 6. I pointed out that Albany has beaten Siena more recently than Siena has had a winning record vs Marist, Manhattan and Iona.

And of coarse they like to start their crap on taxpayer built arenas.

    Well enough on them.

    13639

There is only a few of us who venture into their lair. I mean, I follow Siena casually and with them luck. But man do they sometimes get to me. I just hope I get to them a little to....keep them on their toes.
