1. On his radio show today, Wyland stated it was nice for Siena to lock up McCaffrey but from one of his trusted inside sources was told McCaffrey would not have had shot at Penn job as reason he may have committed so quickly to Siena's offer.  I'm sure Siena fans won't be too flattered by his comment.  Wyland also stated UAlbany/Siena game would be a sure sellout.  It seems like the rivalry keeps building up steam.

Go read the Siena board, if its any indication it's a little hot right now. It's all great, I love it.

  2. Levi, Sweet LU, ZO and Knotts depart. A Big THANK YOU to all four of you for helping lay the foundation.

We know we have a coach in place, possibly for 5 years.

    1. Jamar is back, will he be better?

    2. How much improvement we will see from the Iowa Connection?????

I would expect Brent's post up game and mid range game to continue to improve.

I expect Lillis to be a double digit scorer next season.

    3. I expect Iati to be very solid and you just know he will win us a few games with his perimeter scoring or from the foul line to close out games.

    4. Will Siggers step in next year for sweet LU?

    5. How much can we expect from Covington and Connelly can/will they get the job done on the interior?

    6. New recruits can Gifford or Yocum start or be major contributors as Freshmen.

    7. Is Reid Anderson really a Brian Lillis who looks to score? That would make him a very interesting player.

    8. What will Michael Knight's role be.

    9. Will Bauman surprise us?

Can't wait for the season to start.

    13600

    Patch-

So many questions and so much time to answer them all. I think we need an off season thread for each player. I'd like to take a crack at answering all of these at some point.

Lets start easy since I need to get some work done today.

    #9. Will Bauman surprise us?

I'm afraid there will be no surprises here. Bauman is a point guard and is currently sitting behind Jamar, Lillis, Iati and potentially Knight for playing time. I do not see him working his way into the regular rotation in 06/07.

Early on in his freshman year, we were losing late in a game at home and needed a 3-pointer with less than a minute remaining. Coach put Bauman out there with a host other 3-point shooters. Needless to say for those of us who remember the 04/05 season, we went home losers of a close home game that night. These were the only meaningful minutes, or seconds I've seen Bauman play and don't expect anything to change in 06/07 barring injury.

Could Bauman earn some time as a zone-buster? I don’t see what he can bring to the floor that Iati doesn’t already bring and I don’t see Iati and Bauman on the floor at the same time from a defensive standpoint.

I don’t see Bauman on the floor unless we are way ahead or desperate for 3-pointer and in severe foul trouble.

1 - There was some weird speculation that he might not be back in this mornings TU. But he will most certainly be back, now that Will is signed to a new contract. He will be an even more mature player. I’m not sure how much more he’s going to develop physically, but mental he will be real tough.

2 - The problem with Lilis isn’t that he’s can’t score, he just hasn’t been real aggressive looking for his shot. I think he can contribute 10/12 ppg next year and look for his as always to do more of the little things that don’t show up in the box score. I’m a big fan of Lillis. With Jordan and Levi gone look for B. Wilson to get more touches. Brent is a face the basket type of player, and he doesn’t have a great inside game. His game is to take people out to the perimeter where he can face them up. He will probably improve but I think only marginally, mostly due to increased touches/time and experience.

3 - Iati will be Iati….spot up and hit 3’s I would probably expect him to play about as much as he’s played this year.

4 - Siggers I think will be one of the bigger keys to next year. I like how he played at stretches this year but at times he seemed to disappear especially going into the end of the year. Although he played lights out mid season. If he can be consistent then he will adequately fill in for LU.

5 - Those of you who read the board here know that I’m a huge fan of Conelly. I’m looking for him to have a great season with added playing time. He’s quick, good hands, confident in his game and has some nice inside moves. With some additional work to get bigger and stronger he can be a horse on the inside. I like Covington but I see him more of an inside defensive player and rebounder. In my book the jury is still out on these two but I think they will turn out to be great players with different roles to play.

6-7-8 Of this incoming class I’m a real big fan of Gifford and Reid Anderson. I mean as much as I can be at this point. We haven’t seen them play a minute but from what I can gather Anderson is a Lillis type player with the hustle, but much more offensive minded. He had numerous 30+ scoring games in HS, appears to have nice size at 6’5” and can obviously fill it up. Gifford will probably take a year to really become a baller but has good size and great hands. Yocum will also be solid in my opinion; he has experience playing with two McD. guys so he was a little overshadowed in HS. Need to put on some weight, a little bit of a tweener at his height I would think. I’m not quite sure about Knight. I don’t even know what to offer on him, anyone else have an idea on what role he would fill?

9 - Baumen will sit on the bench next year.

  3. Today's TU article on Brown had some interesting info on Jamar.  He says that if Brown did not re-sign, he was likely leaving to pursue a professional career presumably in Europe.  I know I had read somewhere before that he is basically done with his under grad studies.  Now he is "pretty sure" he is coming back.

Do we need to hold our breath for another press conference to be called?

My question is can his stock get any higher at this point?  AE POY, Tournament MOP, great performance against UConn and now All-America HM.  Obviously another year to develop his skills will make him a better player but that is not the trend these days

    13597

I think he stayes. No one leaves school early to play in Europe, if kids leave early they are going to the NBA.

  4. Well, there's a hostage situation in Kinderhook. Meanwhile Murph's complaining that no one from the University was able to come on his show and give any details, and HE'S BEEN CHAMPIONING BROWN'S CAUSE FOR MONTHS. With friends like him...

    13569

I was :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol: when I heard him Championing Browns cause.

  5. Apparently it was Duell, as reported in the Troy Record yesterday

    13505

NNNNOOOOOOOOOO  I have to believe that we can get something better with the schol. There is no better time to get an impact player, not Duell. Plus the cupboard is full upfront. I doubt he’ll offer him the last scholarship. Duell will probably go to JC and then look around again. I can’t imagine Brown tying up a scholarship for a player that will be a junior come next year and if transferred directly would have to sit two years. Makes no sense.

  6. What is midnight madness?

    13488

The NCAA sets a date when official team practice may begin. Some schools make it an event (contests, dunking exhibitions, etc) with the team bursting onto the floor to the cheers of the fans at the stroke of midnight. The Madness events peaked a couple of years ago, but some schools still do them

    13493

    Thanks!

  7. Does anyone know when Midnight Madness is?  I think it would be great for the University to make a real big event out of it instead of the annual 8pm scrimmage.  It should be a real big party, and if there is any school that knows how to have a big party it is UAlbany!!!

    13483

    What is midnight madness?

  8. I think we all know that if Will leads us to another NCAA appearance next season, an A-10 job will be available.

Three straight NCAAs or three NCAAs in 4 years = Big East job.

I could also see Will leaving after one year if a higher-paying job comes available.

    13475

First of all that would require one of those jobs opening up, and 4 years sucess at Albany (while well apreciated by yours truly) does not necessarily warrant a Big East job. But 4 years is a long time in college basketball so who knows.

In terms of Coach Brown leaving I am not so sure of that. I would take a guess that if he wanted he could probably get a good job based on his performance this year and his ability to build a program that competed with UCLA and UCONN this season. But nevertheless he has reiterated many times that he wants to stay in UAlbany and build this program. Granted he would never come out and say I want to leave but we all know that actions speak louder then words and I would say that his inaction (not sure if that is a word) proves that he truly does want to stay in Albany to see this thing through.

    13476

I agree! I can see Brown being a lifer here. Especially if he keeps building this program and in the ensuing conference shuffle we by some chance wind up in a better place. If he does leave, I’m not sure 4 years of success is enough to warrant a Big East job. It all comes down to money and how much they are willing to invest in him.

  9. Wow, those are some astronomical figures for AE head coaches.  I just assumed $200K was the high end.  $350K??.

What the heck are my season tickets going to cost next year?

    13459

I suspect there are going to be ALOT more season ticket holders next year (thanks in large part to Will Brown) to help defray that cost.

    13465

Not to mention that we can probably expect a 25-50% raise in prices. Does that sound reasonable?

  10. D96 - It's a good article.

I just don't have the faith in the administration.

As I said before, they gambled - they lost - now it's time to ante up.

I do think they'll try to short change Coach Brown, instead of embrace him and show him that he's wanted.

McElroy says in print - everything is done in principle and they're just ironing out the details.

Brown has said to the media you know its a business. He has never said the deal is done in principle.

I may be reading into things too much but as I said - Ijust don't have the faith, like many of the other posters do.

I'm hoping I'm totally off base and if I am I'll say "shame on me I was totally wrong". On the other hand if there is no word by the middle or end of next week I'll say - Heck, I don't know what I'll say.

    Wait and Watch

    13441

I think we are all watching with abated breath. No one knows the level of comitment this administration will make. Infact you could say that this will be a good beromitor to see what the future will be for all sports at this school as we will be able to more acuratally gage their level of comitment.

  11. You guys are of course free to post what you like. I will ask that you consider the fact that it's not unheard for recruits or potential recruits to read fans message boards. I'd hate to think of a guy considering coming to Albany to read that he's "not wanted" by the fans when we don't know what the coaching staff has in mind.

I'm not saying I know anything about this particular sitation. Just asking that you consider it in the future.

    13417

Never thought about it that way. Seems reasonable!

  12. Don't sell Yocum short. He is a legit 6' 8", with good skills and hoop IQ. He played with two all-American guards at Episcopal Academy, and is used to winning against high level competition. I'm not sure whether he will play as a 4 or 5, but he could get meaningful minutes next year.

    13409

I wouldn’t sell Yocum short either. The guy plays with two All-Americans, how many touches/attention do you think he gets. I think he has been overshadowed by those two great players for a long time. If he was playing on any other team I think you would find more interest in him as he would have more opportunity’s to show his game. As it is, he puts up great number. Keep in mind that it’s against some of the best competition in the country at that level. I’m excited about him! Actually, truth be told. I think this will be the best incoming recruiting class in the history of this school. Look at Anderson, from what I can gather, he plays like Lillis but is much more offense minded (several 30+ point games). The JUCO transfer shoots like Iati, but better size and good experience. And Brett Gifford is Brett Gifford. I am not expecting him to be an immediate impact player, but I think he will be great by the time his career is over. We are having a discussion on who would you start next season. The great thing is that this team is CRAZY deep and experienced. Anyone you start you’ll get quality. How many teams in our conference can say that?

  13. personally I dont want anything to do with this Duell kid, I have nothing to back this up with but he seems like a "me first" kind of player and that mentality just does not fly at this school.  Look at the team players we had on this team with Levi and Lucious both taking off the bench roles to help the team this season, the last thing I want and the team needs is a "me first" player!!!

    13407

I’m with you! I’ve stated on more then one occasion that I don’t want Duell here. If he comes here, he will have to sit at least a year and most likely two and in the process sucking up a scholarship, he is to be a junior come next year. I also have issues with his health and the type of game he plays. Can he help? Probably! But at this moment we are riding an incredible high, and we can bring in a great recruit. Our bargaining position and what we have to offer has never been higher. I know that Will is on a scouting trip to Pensacola FL, any clue what he’s looking at? Also isn’t a recruit coming in for a visit later this week? In my opinion Will goes for a PG of the future, because JW is going to be a senior and Lillis is a junior. One or two years down the road who’s playing point??? Exactly!!

  14. There's an article by Bob Weiner in today's Gazette headlined "Brown anxious to sign" , subheadlined "Contract talks progressing"  There are the expected quotes from Dr. McElroy and from Coach Brown.  The article indicates that Coach will make a recruiting trip to Pensacola, Florida Wednesday; then return to meet with a recruit visiting campus on Thursday and take in the Federation tournament over the weekend.

Here's McElroy's quote " A contract is already agreed upon in principle. Coach Brown has gone on record that he wants to be here, and we want him here.  We're just working through the details. As far as any sticking points, there are none.  He wants to be here and we want him.  Clearly Coach Brown and the kids have set a good tone for our athletic program and the university."

    13381

:lol: I think it's a foregone conclusion that he is bringing someone else in with that last scholorship.

  15. The CAA....seems like a pretty good league...but right now I am cool with the AE.

    13357

So am I, other than football the CAA does nothing for me over the AEast, and travel to away games is tougher, but there's not much question it's a higher-attendance, higher-paying league for basketball coaches.

    13359

I'm also happy to be in the AE right now. As great as this season has been, we all need to put it into perspective. It's only been ONE year, now is not the time to move to a better league yet. Lets grow the program.
