2004-05 Starting 5????

Recommended Posts

Now that the school year has started let's see who people think are going to start this year. Here is my guess

PG Jamar Wilson

2G Brandon Perry

SF Lucious Jordan

PF Joe Dyson

C Kirsten Zollner

Bench

Perimeter- Levine, Iati

Big Guy's- St. Hillaire, Wyatt

This is 9 guy's. Don't know what Brown's rotation is going to be. Have not seen Dyson but he comes highly touted and is huge. Also, Perry is suppose to be a ridiculous 3 pt. shooter.

Also, have not seen the other 3 freshmen. I think C. Johnson will be used sparingly as a defensive specialist and Knotts will sit.

First off I hope that Coach Brown respects what the returning players have done for UA Hoop under some severe circumstances and reward some of those players with time especially early in the season.

Secondly I don't know if Zoellner and Dyson will playe a great deal at the same time.

Early on I would anticipate seeing Iati (ROY), Wilson (ROY), Jordan (All MAAC), Levine (All Rookie & 2 solid years) and "Der Big Man".

As the season progresses I would expect to see alot of Perry, Dyson, "Q" and some Wyatt (if he's healthy).

The Freshman will have to earn time, I hear B. Wilson could be real good down the road.

Lillis, Bauman and Courtney will have to really scrap for minutes.

i have never seen him play, but "the word" that i have heard suggested that it may likely be some time before dyson sees a start ... i still can't imagine not seeing levi on the floor to start the season, it will be interesting to see where, position wise, he ends up ... just to enter the fun:

J. Wilson (a fully healed iati will find his minutes)

L. Jordan

B. Perry (so the jc stats suggest)

L. Levine (might not be where he wants, but it may mean significant PT)

K. Zoellner

considering the manpower issues of recent years, it is nice to have a little debate like this

I think you're right - Levi deserves to be on the floor but................

He is truly a tweener - a man without a true position, just a warrior!

Not a good perimeter defender at all.

And he's really too small and not bulky enough for the 4 or 5.

But I think he's got to play somewhere.

Perry is the question mark!!! Why would another guard be brought in especially a JC guy unless he could play and I believe Coach Brown said he can defend and that's very important.

I heard all last year the coaches loved Jordan let's hope he is as good as anticipated. He and Jamar could be a killer backcourt, If Jordan is as advertised and if Jamar is fully recovered.

Zoellner and Dyson are they real bigmen or imposters?

Much more depth but alot of IFs which we won't know about until the games are played.

Do you think Zoellner and Dyson can possibly play at the same time, without forcing the Danes to go zone?

I know Zoellner can't defend on the perimeter (and at 7'1" 270lbs it shouldn't be expected of him) and if Dyson is Big and right now out of shape I would guess he can't defend outside against 4s who have some range.

I wonder what will happen when opposing teams realize Zoellner doesn't run the floor real well and decided to play a more uptempo offense to negate his presence in the middle. I wonder how this will be counteracted since if Dyson really isn't in shape, teams can play a cat and mouse game with Albany and slow the offense down with the Big German out of the line up.

Did Knotts show up in shape?

i am the most optimistic/loyal dane fan you'll find, and i hope that dyson finds his way into the starting lineup for the game against siena (plus, wins another AE ROY for UA), but the scouting report that i heard was not about conditioning, i was just told that we shouldn't expect a great deal this season from the freshman ... better than a healthy wyatt for this year (18 vs. 22 year old)????

Dyson and Boston U's Tony Gaffney are the highest rated incoming high school recruits in the AE. Don't know what Alumni 92 is insinuating? - Professor

i remember the hype/hs ranking talk surrounding herman banks when he came in, not to say that dyson won't become an AE talent ... i hope that he does, but reading his name in potential starting line-ups for 04-05 made me think of what i was told a few weeks back

The Herman banks reference makes me a bit uncomfortable. Banks wasn't recruited and Brown found him at a camp for unrecruited players in Texas. Not only was he unrecruited but he was also not prepared physically and didn't seem to work as hard as he could. Dyson on the other hand was considered a coup for UA. Not only did he seem physically prepared for D1, but rumor was he was being recruited by C-USA schools. That said, he didn't have a great Senior year - had a solid junior year playing next to Will Sheridan.

Alum92 can certainly speak for himself but I think he was only using Banks as an example, not comparing Dyson and Banks. Dyson was an all-state player-he should be good.

I remember reading some of the stuff Alum92 mentioned about Banks but I think it was on message boards not stuff from coaches or recruiting services. If I remember right some of the problem was Banks was described as having a Marcus Camby-like frame. Of course there's a huge difference between having a Camby-like frame and actually playing like Marcus Camby as we learned in Banks freshman year.

The nice part about this upcoming season will be that none of the freshman will have to come in and be terrific for Albany to compete. I think unless Dyson is an absolute phenom he should come off the bench his first couple of collegiate games just so he'll appreciate it and have to earn it in practice, etc. This is especially true if he did come in overweight.

I saw some pick-up today in the old gym. Some quick observations.

1. Not sure Dyson and Zollner can play together. Dyson is huge. He is overweight but he must be 6'9 265. He was banging with Zollner and made a nice move or two. The two of them probably could play together against the big schools like UMass and Pitt from last year. Dyson will contribute immediately and I would say has a bright future.

2. Jamar looked his normal self.

3. Jordan can do it all.

4. Perry hit some 3's

5. Levine didn't look great.

6. Brent Wilson was good.

Those are just some things I noticed. Also, Zollner is going to be very good!

Thanks for the update professor. Really looking forward to this season!

Remarkable that Dyson went from not cracking the top nine to reporting overweight to suddenly one of the first couple people off the bench this season.

Where does everyone sit at the games? I usually sit behind the baskets but no one really wants to talk hoops and the girls are all about whose the hottest on the team.
