Baseketball team photo

Whoops! Just received my Alumni magazine, with the article about the basketball team. Pride may have slipped a little...as the team photo has two of the players flashing an obscene gesture. I assume the next edition will include an aplogy.

You can take the boys out of the lower divisions, but seems their sense of pride in the program that they represent needs a little work.

please elaborate. are you referring to bauman's and jamar's gestures? if its the same picture, each player is flashing their index finger, middle finger and pinky-- ring finger closed-- for those who haven't seen it.

i have no idea what this means and i'm from the rough and tumble streets of roosevelt island.

thanks.

Yep...that's the one...it's referred to as the "shocker"...and I am not going any further on a public forum that might include people who would be offended by any more of an explanation.

I saw it...thought it looked like a hidden message of some kind...and asked a family member who has contact both with young people and athletes...after some hemming and hawing of how to define this to a female relative...I got the message. It's just not funny...and not cute...and is a stupid way to treat the people who supported (and support them with donations) them in a big way for the tournament...and believed in them and continue to support the team.

I am sure when this picture was taken the players did not think that it was going to be put into a news letter, and futhermore the whole idea of the "shocker" symbol was because the players, along with the slogan of "why not us", had a slogan of "shock the world". Agreed that maybe they should have used a different symbol but I am quite sure that they did not use the symbol in any other way than to show their slogan. And lets also remember these kids are college students out their having fun with their teammates.

I am sure it meant "Shock the World"! Along the "Why Not Us" theme!

It's a formal picture taken on the floor with the entire team and coaches and support staff in Philadelphia.

When their in uniform at the first round of the tournament, with their coaches on the floor...or even in team shirts...this weak excuse doesn't hold. If you've been to tournment games...you've heard the warning that profanity is not acceptable...and you can be escorted from the building.

Boys will be boys is what has Duke in trouble. Sorry...those excuses don't work.

If nobody knows what it means, it's not very offensive, is it?

All a person has to do is to see their posture, their expressions, and have a little familiarity with teenagers and athletes...and it was easy to recognize that there was something inappropriate involved. I've shown it to enough people involved in both those areas to know that people recognize it immediately...as do several teenagers who saw it. Doesn't belong here...Maybe they're not ready for prime time yet.

First off how are you going to compare the Duke lacross team to the mens basketball team at albany? And speaking of Duke J J did the same shocker symbol during a game against North Carolina, I am pretty sure he wasn't saying he was shocking the world, and the highlight was replayed over and over again on espn and no one said a word about it. Now i don't think anyone is saying that it was the brightest thing to do to use a symbol like that but I think we all agree it was for good measure for what they were trying to say about shocking the world against uconn. Finally the great danes have just had the best season in school history, why are we talking about a picture, shouldn't we be rememberin the good and not focusing on a misunderstood symbol.

They aren't the same issue and both can exist and be discussued.

"Hey, Day, so what if I stole that car and ran it into a tree...I had straight A's last semester."

Wasn't comparing the Duke lacrosse team in any way with the UAlbany Basketball team. I was using another example of when the "boys will be boys" mentally misfired. At what point do you discuss with young people that their behavior is not acceptable and they need to grow up...the program is maturing, now what about the players. Their Tee-shirts spread the message, their play against UConn spread the message...the program is on the rise. Their symbolic gesture doesn't change that, but it does broadcast a message about their mentality and maturity...and maybe about team discipline. St. Johns had a great program, some minor indiscretions were overlooked...the indiscretions became bigger...and the program hit the toilet. When you are on the way up is not the time to derail the train.

Lessons are to be learned from all things that happen - good and bad.

How does one know if the situation has/hasn't been handled internally already.

Lets not start making mountains out of mole hills.

A mistake was made and hopefully corrected. If things of this nature continue to happen from this point on then there may be some type of problem. But as of right now I see it as an isolated instance.

......but it does broadcast a message about their mentality and maturity...and maybe about team discipline - megowen70

Team discipline, Hmmmm????? under the current leadership ( the past 4/5 years) how many incidents have led you to speculate about lack of discipline!!!!!

Hadn't paid much attention to anything Albany - had irons in other fires - but my interest got piqued...thought it was worth paying some, attention, that is. My alumni money donations went to the athletic dept...until the swim team was abolished. Found the site when I went searching to find out if anything had been done about it...didn't know you existed. I did post somewhere else as well. Sorry if I have offended anyone...but this mattered to me...my alma mater finally making the big time...but acting small time.
