Hughes - Time to move on

Recommended Posts

From Today's TU:

Hughes AWOL: Brown said Sunday he has "no idea" if 6-8 sophomore forward Jamal Hughes will ever return to the team.

The school announced last week that Hughes, who hasn't played this season following the death of his grandfather, will miss the rest of this year for "personal reasons."

Brown said Hughes is still enrolled in school but has returned to Rochester to be with his family.

"I have no idea at this point (if Hughes will play for UAlbany)," Brown said. "I've said this all along, you try to stay patient and you want what's in the best interest in the kid. You want to make sure everything is fine family-related before we worry about him playing."

Hughes transferred this season from Brown Mackie College in Salina, Kan., where he averaged 8.2 points and 6.8 rebounds last year. He initially left the program in mid-November but returned during the semester break.

I am sure he is a nice kid, but let's get the scholarship back and move on. Brown has to do what's best for the program. Not sure if he will be able to use it for the Spring signing period - if he can, let's get it back and get another big man.

Is that possible? Brown brought in five players this year (two transfers) and four players for next year. Isn't that the max? Or maybe Hughes scholarship wouldn't count since he didn't played-it would take a Philadelphia lawyer to figure it out. Should Hughes not return it would be great to see the scholie given to either Johnson or Q this year, they've both earned it.

I think Albany has been more than patient with Hughes. It is unfortunate for all involved, but it is time to move on. His absence has had a negative impact on the team. Obviously, for whatever reason, his future as a contributing member of the team is tenuous at best. We can ill afford to have players on scholarship who are not even on campus when we are forced to play our undermanned squad forty minutes a game and are finishing games with four on the floor. Our current situation should be proof that we can not function at the level we wish to obtain under those conditions.

I'm not sure but under current NCAA regulations I think the school has to appeal to the NCAA to get the scholarship back and have the opportunity to use it.

It would be great if we could get another big who can defend away from the hoop a little and who is athletic enough to pound the glass or a 6'6" - 6'7" athletic perimeter player.

A high level transfer would be great at either of the aforementioned spots.
