Thinking about flying up for the BPG with my son - maybe go skiing with him on Saturday morning going to the game in the evening and coming back on Sunday. I have a boat load of frequent Flyer miles many of which expire this year.

 

Is there a place to go skiing close by? Nothing fancy as my son is 8 and has only gone once.

A woman in my office takes her 5-year-old for lessons on Saturday pm to Maple Ski Ridge in Schenectady County. West Mountain is less than an hour straight up the Northway (Corinth, exit 18). The Catskills and southern Vermont are also in easy reach, if over less-direct roads.

Ski Windham and Hunter Mt. in the Catskills are about 90 minutes and both are pretty big. Assuming you are asking about downhill skiing and not cross-country. There are several places right in Albany where you can rent X-C skis and there are lots of good trails around with some fresh snow. Here's the I Love NY site if you need some help.

willard mountain ... see the link provided by dane pound ... an easy drive, forty-five minutes north of the UA campus ... fun, simple mountain ... satisfies 'nothing fancy' and 'close'

West Mountain in Glens Falls seems best to me.
