  1. You're right! According to Texas Hoop Siggers has signed. From Texashoops.com: A standout student as well as a solid basketball player, Siggers found the combination of books and ball attractive at Albany. The chance of being a part of something special was intriguing as well. "He feels that it's a good fit for him academically as well as basketball-wise," McCool said. "Plus, he's looking forward to playing in the NCAA Tournament - Albany is probably the favorite to win their league next year." Texas Hoops Analysis: Jason is a very good shooter who can really stroke it from behind the 3 point line. He has a strong body, has a bit of a slow release but knows hot to create space and get it off, can hit the pull-up jumper and works on defense.
  2. I'm not sure I follow about the NCAA rules. Holding practice in the middle of campus with the lights on doesn't seem like you're trying to keep it a secret. I remember one of the Siena basketball stories this past year where after a game Lanier brought the team back to the ARC and they had a practice until 2 AM or something. I know there are limits on the number of hours teams can practice but I'm not sure if when they do is an issue. It's not like GD84 is breaking into the athletic offices and posting confidential files on the internet. He's just reporting what anyone walking around campus could see and giving us a little insight on recruiting info that's hard to find in other places.
  3. Recruit Joy Sterling was named MVP of her local all-star game. She had 8 points, 7 boards and 6 steals. When she signed in the fall she was announced as a 6 foot forward. I remember someone, maybe Voice, talking about her vertical leap and that she could get over the rim. I assumed she would be playing small forward or power forward. In the article about her all-star game she said she expects to be playing a lot of guard in college and that she has to sharpen up her outside shooting. Sterling Article
  4. From the quotes he made in that article it sounded like he wanted to stay closer to home in the midwest. Illinois State is certainly closer that Albany.
  5. I doubt whoever selects those thing reacts that well to new stimuli. Can't argue with those numbers though against a pretty decent strength of schedule. The Danes (or Scoobies) stayed at #13 in the polls this week after the loss to Syracuse. Some comments from the laxpower forum poll: "Albany: My #12 - Some Dome cooking (in this case, a big no call on what appeared to be a UA goal late in the 4th) spoils the Danes' upset bid. Now they have UMBC coming with the AE top seed at stake. (Apache) — They may have lost to Syracuse, but they displayed a potent offense with two potential AAs. Right now they have to think AE, because even though they have a possible at-large, I'm not sure the powers-to-be could swallow two AE teams in the tourney. (Artful Dodger) — Great O but no D. (Baldo) — #13 Alb 8-4 based on narrow Dome loss. (ColumbiaBlueBlack) — Scoobs battled Cuse to the wire ... have rebounded from early season disappointments ... 8-4. (jhu7276) — #13 - So they lost to a good Syracuse team by one. (John Henry) — Deserved the win against SU. Albany played better lacrosse but could not compensate for the individual exploits of Bucktooth and Crockett. (Ketch) — (14) Oh so close to collecting the biggest scalp in school history. What a terrific effort by the Danes. UMBC comes into town Saturday. (Lax Fidelis) — #13 (8-4) Tough one-goal loss to Syracuse in the dome. Still have a nice wins over UMass and Dartmouth. (PLB) — This is a very talented group of youngsters. (StanDPeterson) — #13 - Unchanged. The loss to Cuse doesn't drop them. (timbucthree) — 13 - Like so many, gave SU a run for their money only to fall short. May get another chance with America East bid. (Viper) — #13 Almost but not quite able to beat Syracuse. (WNY Lax) — Up two spots to #15 after a near miss but solid effort against Syracuse in the Dome. (Wombat)"
  6. First the Good-Merrick Thomson was named AE player of the week. The bad- The pared down Tewaaraton Award list came out and Luke Daquino isn't on it. Tewaaraton Award Nominees Thomson, Westervelt, Tripodi Pick Up Weekly Honors Sophomore Merrick Thomson (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Albany Academy) of Albany and Sophomore Drew Westervelt (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) of UMBC share America East Player of the Week honors. Bo Tripodi (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) of Stony Brook has been named America East Rookie of the Week. Awards were announced Monday (April 25). Thomson totaled five goals and two assists in a 14-13 loss to No. 7 Syracuse. He tied the game at 10 apiece with 13:00 remaining, plus closed the gap to 14-13 with 1:33 to play. Thomson is first among NCAA Division I leaders in goals per game (3.75) and is second in points with a 5.17 average.
  7. UALBANY’S KURT CAMPBELL CHOSEN IN NFL DRAFT'S SEVENTH ROUND BY GREEN BAY Albany, N.Y. – University at Albany’s Kurt Campbell was taken in the seventh round of the NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, April 24. Campbell, who was the 245th player selected, is the first UAlbany football player to be chosen in the draft. Campbell, projected as a strong safety at the pro level, earned four varsity letters as a Great Dane defender. He finished his career with 120 tackles and 19 pass break-ups while playing both roverback and cornerback. "I’m both surprised and excited," said Campbell, who is the first Northeast Conference player to be taken in the NFL Draft since 2002 when the Dallas Cowboys chose Sacred Heart’s Deveren Johnson in the sixth round. "I am just glad that I still get to play football. Now the work starts." In addition, All-America offensive tackle Geir Gudmundsen agreed in principle to a free-agent contract with the Buffalo Bills. Gudmundsen, who will most likely move to guard or center in the NFL, made 44 consecutive starts at left tackle on UAlbany’s offensive line. In 2004, he was named to the AFCA Division I-AA Coaches’ All-America first team, and earned a spot on both The Sports Network and Football Gazette I-AA Mid-Major All-America squads.
  8. Story in today's TU about both Campbell and Gudmundsen. 1st Dane drafted-TU. The Packers and Bills play a preseason game this year.
  9. That's terrific. I checked about halfway through the 7th round and was starting give up hope. First ranked team at Albany, first player drafted by the NFL, barring the contract stuff it's been a pretty good spring so far.
  10. I read that post more as comparing Coach Brown's situation to Coach Patterson's situation last year and not so much bashing Patterson. I agree with Alum73 and I'm confused also. It's really job the McElroy has done with the rest of the programs that gives me confidence that this all will make sense eventually. In any event it stinks that we have angry letters to the editor after the best Division I season so far. I certainly could unstand them after a 6-23 season but we should be enjoying this offseason and looking forward to next year instead of having a (partly) irritated fan base.
  11. Just in case you didn't see it this morning there is a letter to the editor about the Will Brown contract situation. McElroy could profit from a looking glass-TU I think it went too far in attacking McElroy and the athletics program has a whole which has been very successful. Offhand I can only think of one program at Albany that has finished in the lower half of the conference standings and that was women's soccer. You can possibly find fault with the way he's handled the Brown situation but not with the rest of what's happened there.
  12. Dane96-Glad to hear you are having a good time. There's been some interesting developments going on so hopefully your posting fingers are well-rested. Alum73 have both Covington and another player signed?
  13. Danes chomp at the champs-TU Goalie bails out Orange twice-Syracuse Post-Standard Also a story about some of the decline of traditional lax powers and the rise of some new ones. New wrinkles in lacrosse's face of power-Baltimore Sun
  14. I wonder if this award is based mostly on stats. Daquino is currently third in the country in points per game with Merrick Thomson and one other candidate ahead of him
  15. Admittedly I've tried to adopt Statefan's patience (post from a few weeks ago) on this issue. It would have been ideal to clear this up before the late signing period so it wouldn't possibly affect recruting but we don't live in an ideal world. I would expect a recruit who visited campus would meet both Brown and McElroy and they would discuss the contract situation with them if there was one. On the bright side, the story mentions filling only one more scholarship. I'm taking this to mean Joe Dyson will be clearing Binghamton Bearcats out of the lane in the RACC next year and not going anywhere else. Good news to me.
  16. as written by Orange fans on their lacrosse fourum. Cuse by 6 seems like a popular predicition. Cuse Lax Forum
  17. Since the local media has been following the pro prospects of Gudmundsen and Cambell it made me wonder about some other Albany athletes after graduation. Aside from those two I'd think some of the following have a chance to play professionally somewhere. Luke Daquino-Lacrosse. I know there was a former Albany lacrosse player who had a long pro career and may still be playing. Danielle Hutcheson. I don't know what the criteria are for the WNBA but I'd think they are always looking out for post players. If not there maybe overseas. Bouna Coundoul-Soccer. Admittedly more competiton in soccer but also more opportunity. Statistically one of the best goalies in college soccer this year.
  18. That is awesome! I know Brennan was saying Albany was the favorite to win the conference on Mike and the Mad Dog and a couple of other shows. It looks like people were listening.
  19. Agreed this will come with a big cost but similar big-ticket construction projects have been built at Stony Brook and Bing in the last couple of years. This has been talked about for so long it's fantastic to see solid plans being laid down even if the timetable is up in the air somewhat. I really like the shared concessions stands for both the RACC and the football stadium. Also the tons of possiblilites for the new stadium. There is really nothing like what is being proposed anywhere around Albany. With a proper managment team you can find a lot of things to do with a new stadium. This is really going to be an exciting couple of years to see the change from shoddy D3 facilites to very good D1. You have to graduate and get a great job so you can write a big check (as if you aren't already) to help pay for all this stuff.
  20. Another Juco player who has visited in the past few days. 6'4 small forward/guard who averaged over 17 pts for New Mexico JC. Jason Siggers
  21. Just thought I'd pass this along. There's going to be a bus trip to the Albany-Syracuse lacrosse game. Now that Fox Sports NY has become College TV or whatever they're calling that channel there's alot more lacrosse on TV. They have a Syracuse lacrosse show and will probably be previewing the Albany-Cuse game on their. I'll try and find the times. Here's the bus info: The University at Albany Athletic Department and the Student Association would like to invite you to join UAlbany in Syracuse on April 22 at the Carrier Dome when your #13 Great Danes Lacrosse team takes on #6 Syracuse. Game time is 7pm. The bus will leave the RACC Parking lot at 4pm. Get on the bus for only $30 (Adult) or $15 (UAlbany student). The price includes roundtrip transportation, boxed lunch and admission to the game. Reserve your seats now by calling Peter London at (518) 442-4522 or at plondon@uamail.albany.edu
  22. I just got the invitation to this in the mail yesterday although I don't recall getting one in the past. Just curious, is anyone planning on attending?
  23. I don't know that it's the guy Great Danes 84 saw on campus but Mark Kruse supposedly visited UA recently. He's a 6'7 Juco SF/SG. He was the leading scorer in the NCAA tourney. Mark Kruse
