  1. But UB is doing that right now. It's a lovely logo, but it doesnt stand out, doesn't separate us from our own SUNY brethren, let alone other schools outside of the state. Put the dog on top of it..now we're talking. Compromise, people!
  2. Agree with Jammaster, I think you take out the University at Albany part..leave the UA with the Dane over it..Put THAT in the middle of Bob Ford Field and SEFCU. (Jammaster, great minds think alike. You class of '95? Maybe we shot darts at T's together)
  3. YES!!!! Exactly what i'm talking about. That pops, that stands out and its unique. Where is that from? how old?
  4. Hey DaneFan, you said on AGS that the AD said they wouldn't start construction prior to 2015 on the extension (how greedy we are, considering where we were 2 years ago). Is this from the newscast or other info?
  5. What's the local TV situation this year? I hear the Dane Zone coverage will be better
  6. So any word if they are going to mount camearson the opposite bleachers would be terrible for them to shoot only the visitors side
  7. When I spoke to the fundraising person on Tuesday she told me that the naming rights were not in place yet, but they were asking in the Millions.
  8. Have they announced the 2013-2014 class yet? I haven't seen anything online. Wondering if they are able to capitalize on the recognition for the offense being so exciting.
  9. She told me she was meeting you today. We had lunch today. I grilled her a bit about the stadium. She knows that its meant to be expandable but they are still paying back loans from the building of the stadium, so its not going to happen right away. Also talked about expanding the lacrosse facility (bathrooms, etc)
  10. Met with Mary Johnson, the Major Gifts Officer (very sweet woman) from the University today (SoCal_Dane, you're next) and she told me that there is a new person who has taken over the new media aspects for athletics and that the horribly outdated website will be getting some sort of revamp. Also worth noting, CSNE funding did not take away from UA funding and those came from separate coffers.
  11. Here's a Great Dane rescue group (which I would prefer, as the owner of a rescue myself) with a 518 #. I'm in Los Angeles, so probably hard for me coordinate, but i can help with the fundraising. http://nydanerescue.com/ We should contact them, and see about getting a Dane OR maybe if they'll bring a different Great Dane to each game, and advertise that it's for adoption at the game. How's that for some marketing!
  12. I'm thrilled at the level of passionate discussion on this: Yes, in the brave new world of interconnected media, everything is marketing, so if someone is doing research and see us on a list with Harvard, Penn, etc etc, people's ears are going to prick up (unless its worst food, or most prisonlike dorm rooms, 90s grads will know what I'm talking about here). So those lists DO matter. I agree bout the multiple mascots, like the Wahoos/Cavaliers for UVA, the War Eagle and the Tigers for Auburn, etc etc. I was never suggesting getting rid of the UA (though I hate the Ualbany thing too, I wish were were Albany University or something like that, but i DO love the UA, You Know chant). And I wasn't suggesting goofy..just something with personality, something that we have that stands out. NOW, who do we speak to about getting a live Great Dane at the games. That would be FANTASTIC. How about this...I bet a Great Dane pup is 1k, care for it and food for a year is probably about the same, find a handler to board or, or if we are lucky enough, a family to take care of it and bring it to basketball and football.. Maybe THAT's our contribution to the school. Big Purple Fans presents Damien the First. I'm in for $100..who is with me?
  13. I mentioned this in my logo rant on another thread but Lacrosse just got a totally new look from Nike.
  14. That's be a great point to bring up to whomever knows. There was a little bit of that discussion on the Any Given Saturday thread (must reading for any of you who follow FCS).
  15. Look we can argue minute details all we want. The fact is that EVERY school if they want to grow and jump to national attention needs to market themselves, academically, athletically, whatever. We have something, our mascot, that is unique. Why don't we use that as PART of our marketing to get some national attention. It worked this past year in the NCAA where we actually had people writing articles about it. Why wouldn't we jump on that? Our UA logo looks exactly like the Auburn or Arizona logo but with a different color scheme. That's NOT going to make us stand out, and we know spending FBS money to make us stand out isn't going to happen either. I bet with a couple of sheckels and a viral campaign we could actually get some notice. I'd also like to point out that our most successful recruiting sport ever and the one that gets the most national attention in its sport's press, lacrosse (Lyle Thompson was the No. 1 ranked recruit in the country his SR. year of HS) uses the "goofy" Great Dane on their helmet.
  16. Excuse me, I meant to say D-1, vs, D1-AA. Does anyone care about any football schools on a national level until they go D1/FBS? Isn't that what we are all clamoring for here? Another 20k seats and FBS? So they pretty much won the entire time at D-1 level and you can be pretty sure that that blue field got them a TON of national attention when they went D1.
  17. Actually, they went division 1 in 1996. Since 1999 they are 86-4 at home.
  18. I'm not suggesting that's the sole emphasis of the department. It's like creating a movie or a TV show. You don't create your program based on marketing (most of the time). You create something of quality, and then turn it over to the marketing to figure out how to get people to watch it. Tweaking the logo or mascot or marketing of the team isn't going to change the direction of the athletics department. It's just going to get people to pay attention differently. I cannot stress enough what Boise State has done..and it worked...brilliantly.
  19. Eh, it looks like a panther with big ears and is a dated style that was huge a few years ago but schools are now moving away from. innovate, not imitate!
  20. I think those are a little typical and severe. I say play up the cartoon aspect. We won the tournament name championship in the NCAA on Deadspin this year and that was probably the biggest name recognition nationally our name recognition has ever gotten. So keep the Great Danes, call us secondarily the Scoobies, and have fun with it. It'll be a marketing coup. I like this one below. Maybe not with the writing, but it has personality and its DIFFERENT. Like the Blue Field in Boise, which has worked pretty well for another state school in the state capital.
  21. Started this on the construction thread, thought it worthy of posting here. In favor of changing our main logo in marketing from the (what i think to be) dated UA logo to an image of Damien. Two points: Gimmicks work in college football. The blue field at Boise, the red field (as hard as it is to watch) at Eastern Washington to a lesser degree, Chief Osceola, UGA the Bulldog, the Boomer Schooner, Syracuse Orange, even that weird trend of Oregon State Beaver and South Carolina Cocks hats worked and brought money to those schools through sales, We need to establish that here and work with what we have. What we have is a cool mascot with a unique name. The current Damien or Damian (SP?) isn't goofy. It may be cartoonish, but its not goofy. And lets be honest, It's not like we can make a Great Dane look vicious. The most famous one in history is an clumsy comic strip character, unless you count Hamlet.

  23. Perhaps we should start a new thread on this and start the movement. Damien for Everything!
