  5. UALBANY MEN’S BASKETBALL Danes look to stop 3-game losing streak UAlbany tries to bounce back quickly after defeat at Maine, set to meet New Hampshire By Pete Dougherty UALBANY AT NEW HAMPSHIRE When: Noon Saturday Where: Lundholm Gymnasium, Durham, N.H. TV/Radio: ESPN+ (streaming), WTMM 104.5 FM Lori Van Buren/Times Union UAlbany coach Dwayne Killings said there’s no time to look back at the loss at Maine with a game against UNH on Saturday. Jim Franco/Times Union UAlbany’s Jonathan Beagle said road wins go a long way to helping a team secure a home berth for the postseason. Time waits for no one, a point University at Albany men’s basketball coach Dwayne Killings hopes to get across to his players as their season heads into the home stretch. Barely 39 hours after losing its third straight America East game, UAlbany returns to action at noon Saturday to face New Hampshire in Durham, N.H. The wounds from Thursday night’s 81-73 loss at Maine, a game in which they whittled an 18-point second-half deficit to three before running out of gas, are still fresh as the Great Danes prepare for a solid Wildcats squad. “We talk to our guys about time,” Killings said. “Time moves really quick. When we first had the conversation, I think we have 23 practices now left, 12 shootarounds and 12 games. That’s it for the season, and it moves fast. That surprised some people because they look at everything day-by-day. Don’t waste time. This is why you play. Let’s not waste a single second of it.” The Danes have just 12 regular-season games and what they hope is an extended run in the America East Tournament remaining. While that is far ahead of last season’s 8-23 team that failed to qualify for the league tournament, UAlbany’s outlook has changed in a flash. Less than a week and a half ago, UAlbany (10-10, 2-3) was one of four conference unbeatens. Now the Danes have lost to three of the America East’s four top teams, and their only victories — vs. NJIT and Binghamton — have come against teams still winless in the conference. “You’ve got to renew your mind,” Killings said. “My whole message to the team is we have to embrace doing hard things. Our focus has to move from Maine to New Hampshire, because that’s the next game. You can’t spend a lot of time dwelling on this last one.” New Hampshire (12-7, 4-2), which has won three straight, stands in the way of UAlbany ending its three-game skid. The Wildcats are coming off a 77-74 home victory over Binghamton and already have beaten Maine, NJIT and UMBC, all on the road. “Road games are super important in this league,” said Danes sophomore forward Jonathan Beagle, who is expected to play Saturday despite rolling his ankle in the loss at Maine. “If you want to have a home playoff game, you got to win road games (in the regular season).” The top four in the regular-season standings will play host to first-round tournament games in March. New Hampshire is currently in fourth. Maine and UAlbany are tied for fifth, although the Black Bears have the tiebreaker because of their victory Thursday night. The Danes will finish their three-game road stretch next Thursday night against Vermont, which has won 20 consecutive conference games, the longest streak in the nation. “On the road, I would love a little more time to prep and have a shootaround,” Killings said of the short span between games, “but it is what it is. You’ve got to get out there and be ready to win the game.”
  6. New Hampshire comes into this context at 12 -7 overall and 4-2 in conference. 9. How close was this game .... the final minute of play took approximately 20 minutes actual time to play out.
  10. Not the first time, we have seen a post similar to this. Brutally right to the point of our MBB problems. Jonathan Beage has been in a four-game funk ... I have been left wondering: What was Killings thought process in not starting Jonathan Did something happen between him and Killings and/or one of the assistants? Did something happen between him and one or more of his teammates? I did not watch the stream of last night's game as I attended the WBB game against Maine .... yes, I agree Coach Mullen time with us may come to the end of this season.
  11. With St. Rose closing down at the end of this semester, Will can add this work experience to his resume as there could be one or two DI WBB coach positions open in the Capital District as well as one or two DI MBB positions open at the end of the season. I would not be shocked or surprised if both DI schools make leadership changes and there is a real possibility of a WBB coach moving on to the next level.

  16. If I recall correctly, a WBB player arrived from Hoosick Falls back in the autumn of 2019, lasted one year. I have wondered time from time where she ended up. Cobleskill is benefitting from Logan Thayne's' talents. From Tuesday's Times-Union: CAMPUS WATCH Thayne double trouble for Cobleskill foes Hoosick Falls graduate is ranked in top 25 in Division III for season in double-doubles By Bill Arsenault Courtesy of Cobleskill Athletics/ Hoosick Falls graduate Logan Thayne (50) averages 16.6 points and 10.2 rebounds per game for Cobleskill. Senior Logan Thayne has nine double-doubles for the Cobleskill women’s basketball team, which stands tied for 25th place on the Division III statistics list. Another would move her up to being tied for 16th. The 6-foot-2 center/forward from Hoosick Falls and a Hoosick Falls High graduate just missed her 10th when she had 13 points and nine rebounds in an 84-28 nonleague victory at Pratt Institute on Saturday in Brooklyn. Not bad, considering that she played just 15 minutes in the lopsided contest. Thayne leads the team in scoring (16.6), rebounding (10.2) and blocked shots (35). The victory against Pratt moved Cobleskill to 16-1 overall and in first place in the North Atlantic Conference with a 7-0 record. The Fighting Tigers are also getting solid play from junior Cara Walker of Phelps at 12.4 points and 9.0 rebounds per game, junior Taylor Meacham (Berne-Knox-Westerlo) is averaging 8.8 points and has a total of 50 assists and sophomore Emily Satterday (Shaker High) is averaging 8.2 points and 9.0 rebounds.
  17. From Wednesday's Times-Union: UALBANY MEN’S LACROSSE Great Danes driven to end title drought After losing in final last season, UAlbany eyes first America East crown since 2018 By Mark Singelais Jim Franco/Times Union archive UAlbany graduate Graydon Hogg scored 19 goals last season, but didn't play in the loss to Bryant in the America East final. ALBANY — The University at Albany’s Graydon Hogg and Jake Piseno have one more chance to get that elusive America East men’s lacrosse championship. Hogg and Piseno are graduate students who last season narrowly missed the Great Danes’ first title since 2018. UAlbany lost in double overtime to Bryant in the championship match. “I think that (a championship) has always been the goal,” Piseno said Tuesday. “When I first came here, it was always to get four in my four years. Now I have a fifth year, which I’m super grateful for and I think to end it with an America East title… that’s all I want.” Hogg, who plays attack, and Piseno, a midfielder, are both taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA because of the COVID-19 pandemic. “This is my fifth year now and we still haven’t won a championship yet, right?” Hogg said. “I think that all of it’s motivation to keep going. Last year, we were so close. We had all the pieces. Just a couple of unlucky bounces and it went Bryant’s way. But we have all the confidence in the world and it’s just pushing us to be the best that we can be in May and see where we are.” UAlbany opens its season Feb. 17 against Colgate at Casey Stadium. Hogg made second-team All-America East last season with 19 goals, but he missed the America East Tournament because of a lower-body injury. Piseno, who led the Great Danes with 78 ground balls and 50 caused turnovers, was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year. Last week, Piseno was named as a USA Lacrosse Preseason All-America. The Great Danes, 6-10 a year ago, were picked to finish third in the America East preseason coaches poll announced last week. Bryant was selected to repeat, followed by Vermont in second place. UAlbany beat the Catamounts in the semifinals last season. “It’s fine,” UAlbany head coach Scott Marr said. “Again, I think Bryant and Vermont are worthy teams, for sure. UMBC, they’re all good, you know what I mean? So it doesn’t really matter. We’re third now but hopefully we climb ourselves up to be No. 1 at the end of the season. That’s all you can do.” Marr said the Great Danes grew from that agonizing loss to Bryant, which tied the match with 15 seconds left in regulation and won in the second overtime. “Getting that experience and getting to that moment, so they understand what that moment is about now,” Marr said. “So moving forward, six fifth-year seniors, tremendous guys underneath them. Our young guys are excellent, our freshmen and sophomores, and sprinkle in some juniors and seniors in there, and this is a team that didn’t lose that much from last year, had all that experience and played some good teams really tightly. Just need to take that next step this year.” Sophomore attack Silas Richmond led the Great Danes with 34 goals as a freshman last season, including a hat trick in the championship game. “I think it’s a good experience to have, obviously, playing in tight games,” Richmond said. “We’re going to have tight games again, so having that early experience is obviously helpful.” Marr added an offensive piece in Canisius transfer Kevin Carney, a sophomore attack from Burnt Hills who scored 16 goals for the Golden Griffins last season. Marr said Carney is among UAlbany’s top four attackmen. “He’s very, very good,” Marr said. “We’re very happy that Kevin joined us.” Senior Jack VanValkenburgh and freshman Landon Whitney are competing at goalie for the Great Danes, a team that didn’t have one bad fall practice, according to Marr. “Our urgency is definitely there from day one,” Marr said.
  18. You have made the best statement how UAlbany Football came to be a top 5 team this past year and how UAlbany Football will operate as long as Greg Gatusso is here. I am surprised one other men's sport has used the portal more frequently.
  19. I could not agree more, however, the rest of the team is not far behind.
  20. There seems to be less concessions as the season progresses, I would use the term concessions lightly, if at all.
  21. Inside Lacrosse has D3 transfer as a impact player on our team: Chris Crapanzano, M, Scranton to UAlbany Crapanzano feels like an Albany guy in the way he does everything. He can take face-offs or help out on the wing. His ability to play both ends and get up and down the field to create instant offense fits the Danes’ M.O. He has a box background, too. Coach Scott Marr isn’t afraid to run a lot of guys, so he will get time and make an impact in every phase.
