  1. There are only so many minutes to be had. Let's hope Jon shakes it off and when his opportunity comes he knocks down some shots and regains his status.

Do you consider 1 min. an opportunity?

    12057[/snapback]

One minute was his opportunity and last night he did not take advantage of it. John came in, passed up an open look at a three (what he is on the floor for) then drove the lane against a team with 4 guys over 6'7" and was out of control, and lost the ball. John is and will be an important contributor in certain situations. Last night was not one of those. Do I feel bad for him? Sure, but this team clinched the AE regular season title and has 17 wins.

The offense was rolling almost all night, absent the stretch to end the first half. There can be no problems with rotations last night.

  2. The Albany men finished the meet with 193 points, while UMBC (148) and the University of New Hampshire (127.50) finished at second and third, respectively. In fourth place was Boston University with 100 points, followed by Binghamton University (86.50)and University of Maine (50). Stony Brook University (30), University of Vermont (22) and University of Hartford(20)rounded out the nine-team field.

On the women's side, Boston University (195) took the meet over second-place Albany (165.50) by 30.5 points. Maine (91) and New Hampshire (84.50) finished third and fourth, respectively. They were followed by UMBC(84), Binghamton (71), Vermont (53), Stony Brook (33) and Hartford (3).

Boston U.’s Robyn Jonhnson was named coach of the year for the women, while UMBC’s David Bobb won the award for the men.

Albany's Andrew Allstadt captured the 3,000-meter run title with a time of 8:25.28. Allstadt went on to win the 5,000-meter crown with an ECAC qualifying time of 14:26.99. Allstadt's efforts were rewarded by being named the 2006 America East Track Performer of the Year and the winner of the Coaches Award, given to the athlete who scores the most points for his team.

Other champions for Albany were Pat Weider in the 200-meter (21.77), Gered Burns in the 800 (1:52.22), the 4x800 relay made up by Jared Jupin, Ricardo Estremera, Joseph Belokopitsky and Burns. For field events, Kamar Elliot took the titled in the triple jump with a leap of 48-10.75.

The Boston U. women started out with a first in the mile with Abby Sadowski breaking an America East record from 1995 with a time of 4:51.97. The previous record was held by Boston U.'s Christine Stief (4:44.98). Sadowski went on to capture the 1,000-meter crown with a time of 2:51.10. Sadowski finished the meet by anchoring the winning distance medley relay (11:42.16), that broke the previous America East standard from 2003. Sadowski was named the America East Track Performer of the Year for her efforts. Teammates Marisa Ryan, Erin Cadden and Claire Robson ran the other three legs of the 4x800 relay.

Boston U.'s Ryan also took first in the 3,000-meter with a record breaking time of 9:40.21. Fellow Terrier Andrea Walkonen contributed to the record breaking by taking the 5,000-meter race with a time of 16:13.80, over 14 seconds faster than the previous America East standard. High jumper Nikki Hill won the event for the Terriers with a jump of 5'05.75", while Tahari James won the long jump with a 19" leap. James would go on to win the triple jump crown by jumping 40"04.25. James was named the Field Performer of the Year and also won the coaches award for gathering the most points.

Albany’s Joe Greene placed second in the 400-meter (48.50) and was on the second place 4x400 relay to help him earn the Rookie of the Year award. Vermont’s Jan Carlson took the 55-meter dash title with a time of 7.283, fifth in the 200-meter (25.28) and was named Rookie of the Year on the women’s side. Binghamton’s Hasani Hampden won the heptathlon with 4,910 points and placed second in the 55-hurdles (7.72). and was named Field Performer of the Year.

  5. GERED BURNS, FREDDIE WILLS EARN A-EAST ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS

Boston, Mass. - University at Albany's Gered Burns has been named the America East Conference Male Track Co-Performer of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday, Feb. 14. Freshman Freddie Wills earned America East Male Field Performer of the Week.

Burns, a senior, won the championship 800-meter run at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark. on Feb. 11. The senior ran an IC4A-qualifying time of 1:49.86 to defeat three 2005 All-Americans. It was the second straight week Burns has won the 800m. He put together a school record-setting performance at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational on Feb. 4. Burns became the first UAlbany athlete to compete at the elite Tyson Invitational.

Wills, a freshman, won the long jump with a mark of 22-feet, 6.25-inches to help the UAlbany men to a dual-meet win over Binghamton on Feb. 11. The leap was four inches off his personal best in the event. He also placed second in the triple jump with a personal-best, IC4A-qualifying leap of 47-0.75, only nine inches off the top competitor.

Burns will defend his America East 800m indoor title when the UAlbany track and field teams compete at the America East Conference Championship, held at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center, on Feb. 17-18.

  6. Burns Wins at Tyson, UA Defeats Binghamton

Fayetteville, Ark. - UAlbany's Gered Burns (left) won the 800-meter run at the Tyson Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Arkansas' Randal Tyson Track Complex. Burns, who competed against three All-Americans in the event, posted a winning time of 1:49.86. The Great Danes also defeated Binghamton in dual meet action on Saturday, Feb. 11 at the Binghamton Event Center.

GERED BURNS CAPTURES 800-METER RUN AT TYSON INVITATIONAL

Fayetteville, Ark. - UAlbany's Gered Burns won the 800-meter run at the Tyson Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 11 at Arkansas' Randal Tyson Track Complex.

Burns, who competed against three All-Americans in the event, posted a winning time of 1:49.86. Stanford's Michael Garcia, a two-time New Mexico scholastic state champion in the 800m, finished second in 1:51.09.

Earlier this season, Burns captured 800m titles at the Great Dane Classic and the New Balance Collegiate Invitational, where he ran the fastest time by a collegian this season at 1:48.80.

UALBANY MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK TEAMS DEFEAT BINGHAMTON IN DUAL MEET

Vestal, N.Y. - Adanna Andrews won the 1,000-meter run with an ECAC-qualifying time as UAlbany defeated Binghamton, 80-72, in a dual meet at the Binghamton Event Center on Saturday, Feb. 11. The UAlbany men downed the Bearcats, 82-57.

Andrews, who earlier this season qualified for the ECAC meet in the 800m event, posted a winning time of 2:57.32 in the 1,000m. Ritshell Verdier captured the shot put (42-feet, 0.5 inches) and the weight throw (41'-7") to lead the Great Danes in the field events. Danielle Trimpop raced to a win in the mile with a time of 5:12.03, while Anisha Andrews finished first in the 800m in 2:18.68. Twin sisters Jessica and Jenna Ortman placed one-two in the 3000m and Kamilah McShine won the 55m hurdles.

Ray Gilman (47'-9.25") and Freddie Wills (47'-0.75") both qualified for the IC4A Championship in the triple jump, finishing first and second. Wills added a first-place jump of 22-6.25 in the long jump, while Renauld Buck won the shot put with a throw of 46-10.25.

Kamar Elliott claimed the top spot in the 55m hurdles in a season-best time of 7.77, while also finishing second in the long jump. Joe Belokopitsky captured the 800m and was part of the winning 4x400 relay that also included Rachaud Hill, Jared Jupin and Andrew Overbaugh.

Junior Burnett and Pat Weider added victories in the 55m and 200m, respectively. Ricardo Estremera (mile) and Ryan Gaedje (3,000m) also posted individual victories for the Great Danes.

  7. I don't believe in the conspiracy theory.

Mr. Koehn appears to be a real local person.

Do your own homework but I Yahoo searched ("Paul Koehn" Albany) and he's there and doesn't appear directly affiliated with the U.

Someone should steal Coach's newspaper this morning. What 12 wins in the last 14 games, back to back road wins etc. etc., and this is what he has to read this morning. Unreal.

  8. And Duke wins in spite of Coach K.

I too have been critical of certain moves by Coach Brown. We all have our opinions. But to say this team is winning in spite of Coach Brown is a joke. 11-2 in conference.

He references Z's near 50% FG%. He doesn't check the TO's and missed FT's that make that 50% much less impressive. That's not meant to be a knock on Zoelner, he just isn't a great offensive player, or even very good. Is he effective, absolutely. Defense, rebounds, etc. Last year we tried too hard to get Zoellner the ball and hit killed the O at times. This is a great improvement over last year and now the team leads the conference in scoring and wins.

Taking a player out after a foul. He's probobly refering to the BU game. Brian had 3 fouls came in and committed his fourth. I'd take him out too.

I've seen coach Brown pull Jamar a ton, oh wait he plays nearly every minute of every game. I forget the game but early in the season he pulled the entire starting five (maybe 4) off the floor 2-minutes in (Utah Valley St?) after a bunch of TO's.

If Paul wanted to criticize he could have mentioned Jason Siggers on the bench for the first half of the season.

Again this letter is a joke.

  9. Could not agree more. And with the game on the line, there is no one else in this league you would want to have the ball. He can score in every way imaginable. He has also cut down the TO's in conference play.

His numbers are great too. He may be the leading scorer when its all said and done. He averages over 5 boards out of the guard position. 4 assists. 85% free throw shooter. 1.4 steals/game.

Adeleke is a great talent, but Jamar is a great talent and wins games.

  10. BURNS RUNS FASTEST 800-METER TIME IN NATION AT COLLEGIATE INVITATIONAL

New York, N.Y. - UAlbany's Gered Burns ran the fastest time in the 800-meter run by a collegian this season and Alyssa Lotmore set a school record in the 5,000-meters at the New Balance Collegiate Invitational held at the New York City Armory on Feb. 3-4. The Great Danes established four school marks at the two-day competition.

Burns, who had already broken his own school record once this season, won the championship 800m in a time of 1:48.80, provisionally qualifying for March's NCAA Championship. The senior took first in this same event at the 2004 Collegiate Invitational and finished second last season. Burns' time is the fastest in the America East Conference by nearly five seconds. Andy Allstadt also ran a personal-best 14:47.11 in the 5,000m. It was the first time he has broken the 15-minute mark this season.

"I was really happy with how it turned out," said Burns, who has won consecutive IC4A 800m indoor titles. "It helped to have such great competition, and I went out hard."

"Gered is one of those special individuals that coaches get every now and then," said UAlbany track and field coach Roberto Vives. "He ran against the best today and showed that he is a champion."

Lotmore, a junior, covered the 5,000m in an ECAC-qualifying time of 16:57.62 to become the first woman in school history to break the 17-minute mark indoors. She eclipsed the previous standard of 17:34.61, set by Tonya Dodge in 1997, by more than 35 seconds. Corinna Hengen broke her own school record in the pole vault with a mark of 10-feet, 10-inches. She improved on her personal best by four inches.

  11. McFan,

Great report, as usual, on the indoor track teams. Thanks for making the reading of their news easier to access for a lot of us UA fans who might otherwise be unaware .

Our track teams have always performed well, at least since I started watching them in the late 1960's, and it is rewarding to read of their achievements at a higher level of competition. Track team members get far less positve exposure for what they do than student-athletes in other sports, but their feats are just as difficult to attain.

As many of the fans of this forum know, these student-athletes also take time out to support their comrades in other sports. They are a real class act.

Congratulations to the students and the staff who work with them. Four school records broken in one match - fantastic!

Thanks, Coach has for years provided result to alumni and I thought it was a good idea to pass them along.

I've only followed the team since the mid-80's, but this has always been one of the most competitive teams at the University
