  1. He was huge last night. Without him we lose that game (obviously).

Question: Where does he go sometimes? I know he's not going to score 1.5pts/min every night or go 5-5 from three, but he is an offensive threat and a potential matchup problem. He rebounds plays D. Yet, certain games when the O is doing nothing, he sits on the bench. Many times he has actually been the defense on a offense/defence rotation.

Opinion: I'd love to see him get 18-22 minutes every game. I also think he could have helped pull off a victory against NH give some more playing time. Should've, could've, would've.

  2. reeder -

I was looking to the same thing on Iati last night but ESPN gave me a page error and I want to bed.

I has similar thoughts about a potential injury but I think we would hear about something like that.

My only other thought is that back when he was the primary option, many of his shots were coming off the dribble.  Now that there is more talent on the floor he has taking more catch and shoot shots.  This can't be the only reason but it is a thought.

I agree the perimeter shooting needs to improve but I think to solve this they need to pass the ball to the post more often.  Every game begins with a few passes into the Zoellner and then this part of the offence slowly disappears.

It doesn't need to be Zoellner but it does need to be more of an in and out game

    11351[/snapback]

Personally I feel it can't be Zoellner. Once in a while is fine, when something is there. But his inability to catch the ball, offensive fouls, poor free throw shooting, and generally slowing down the O is not going to help.

Zoellner can be, and is a contributor on this team. Rebounds, defends, clogs the middle, put backs, etc. He unfortunately is just not a talented (outside of being 7'1") offensive player.

It was amazing to see the struggles from the outside last night. Teams are going to pack it in until Albany proves they can and will shoot it. It seems to be in Iati's head. I know he shot a handful last night but he also passed up some open looks that he never did before. If he is in the game and has an open look he has to shoot it. As the coach has said before he is a great shooter.

  3. Hello Alumni,

Thanks to all that came out and supported the meet. It was great to see you all. It was a tremendous meet!!!!!

UALBANY MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK TEAMS PLACE SECOND AT GREAT DANE CLASSIC

New York, N.Y. - Gered Burns and Jessica Ortman each broke their own school records in the 800-meter run to lead the UAlbany men's and women's track teams to second-place finishes at the Fourth Annual Great Dane Classic at the New York City Armory on Friday, Jan. 20. The Great Danes won a combined 10 events and set five new UAlbany standards.

The men placed second behind defending IC4A champion Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights scored 134 points to UAlbany's 109. Burns, who was named the meet's most valuable performer, ran a 1:49.24 to win the 800m, breaking his own record of 1:49.49 in the event which he set at last year's USA Track & Field Nationals. Burns' time is the fastest in the nation this season. Junior Burnett also set a new school record in the 200m, running an IC4A-qualifying time of 21.93 to take fifth place overall. His time is also the fastest in the America East this season. Burnett also qualified for IC4As in the 55m dash with a time of 6.44, good for fourth place.

Four-time America East triple jump champion Kamar Elliott posted his first win in the event this season with an IC4A-qualifying mark of 48-feet, 5.25-inches. Joe Greene won the 400m for the second time this season with a time of 48.15. Andy Allstadt also posted a win in the 5,000m with a time of 15:07.16, while Robbie Freeman covered the 3,000m in 8:32.81 to win the event. The men's 4x400m relay ran 3:13.26 to break a school record established in 2003. Greene ran an anchor leg of 47.4, while Burnett, Burns, and Stephen Evans were also on the relay.

The women finished second among a field of 13 teams with 116 points. Northeastern won the title with 143. Jessica Ortman ran a 2:11.23 to win the 800m, eclipsing her own record of 2:12.96 set at last week's NYC Gotham Cup. Jillian Sherman won the triple jump with a distance of 40-1.5 to tie the UAlbany standard set by Jennifer Aubin in 2004. The mark also qualifies her for the ECAC Championship.

Alyssa Lotmore ran a season-best 9:54.38 to win the 3,000m for the second time this season. The women's distance medley relay also posted a win with an ECAC-qualifying time of 12:14.77 with legs run by Lotmore, Heather Angel, Jessica Ortman and her twin sister Jenna Ortman. Patty Diedrich ran the 55m hurdles in an ECAC-qualifying time of 8.29 for a second-place finish, while freshman Sarah Charles had a personal-best triple jump of 39-4.25 to qualify for ECACs.

  4. "Seems to me that Jamar tries to do too much...again. Let's use 5 guys. We will be more successful that way. "

I would agree that sometimes he tries to do to much, sometimes he has to. 21 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 TO's in 44 minutes. Yes he shot 8-21 but he was hit on a number of those, and 38% isn't terrible.

After the officiating there is plenty of blame to go around but not on Jamar Wilson.

"I think we might get more scoring out of Levi these days than Lou. Yes, Lillis is a scrapper, but we need points right now. This squad should be averaging 70 points per game."

It seems to depend on which one shows up. Jordan and Levine both have been great and both have dissappeared in games. Take a look at Jordans numbers from yesterday. 2 pts, 1 reb, 0 assist, 2 steals, and one TO in 26 minutes. If its offense my 2 cents would be Jason Siggers. In the end matchups will dictate a lot of minutes for these players.

As for Lillis, I still like him at the point, but as I mentioned earlier he has to at least consider looking at the basket once in a while.

  5. I feel I can now post, some 22+hrs later.

The officiating had the entire place in an uproar. Janov got away with anything he wanted. I'm on the bench side and he was setting up mid post area. Wether he had the ball or was setting up for it, he would shove, push, hook and just overpower guys. When Levi or Brent tried to match him, they would immediately have a foul called. I miss Chris Wyatt. He would have fouled out quickly but Janov would have hit the floor at least 3 times. And its not that Levi can't match him in toughness its just a foul was called everytime he tried.

They at least called the Ronnie Lott type hit he had on Lillis on the breakaway intentional.

Those officials may have single handidly cost this team home court for the AE tourney and that is a shame.

How many hits did Jamar take and no calls, he went to the line 5 times. A joke.

Siggers needed more time. (I know the coach knows more, meaningless opinion, things happen at practice, etc.) Iati was a problem defensively against this team. They had at one time a point gaurd too fast for John, a 6'4" shooting gaurd and three guys 6'8". Nobody he can cover.

The team was head faking a lot of looks from three again. I'm sure they don't want to just launch threes but to many open looks passed up to shoot the same or worse shot later in the clock.

    The positives.

Jamar continues to play well, only three TO's and if he had been getting any calls would have had 25+.

Lillis, six more steals. He has to find a way to do more offensively.

Zoellner looked good. Just missed the double double. Also had some slapped/ripped away. Needs to stay away from the foul line at all costs.

Levi had a great 30 second stretch. What a tip in that was in a clutch time.

  6. A few thoughts:

    1. Someone besides Brent and Jamar needs to step up. Levi played well against Utah Valley...

Step up would be great. Show up would be nice. They shot 23.5% absent Jamars performance and scored a total of 24 pts, 8 baskets. Starters were even worse at 20.8% and 5 baskets in 104 minutes played.

I guess sometimes these nights just happen. Hopefully Brents thumb is a minor, quick healing, type injury.

That said without Zoellner (5 boards in 18 minutes) and Wilson foul trouble they may have been able to complete the comeback.

  7. While I certainly agree the D has been much improved, this team is second in scoring in conference (by 0.1 points behind Hartford) and overall. The O at times is inconsistent but there are what 8 guys that have double digit games this year. The good thing, during the streak at least, is that there has always been one or two guys to step up offensively. Usually can pensil Jamar in for his points and then there is always somebody else.

  8. Here is a good chance for those in the NYC area to see the Track team in action.

  9. UALBANY WOMEN PLACE SECOND, MEN THIRD AT NYC GOTHAM CUP

New York, N.Y. - Freshman Jessica Ortman set a school record in the 800-meter run to lead the UAlbany women's track and field team to a second-place finish at the New York City Gotham Cup at the New York City Armory Track Center on Friday, Jan. 13. The men's 4x400-meter relay was first across the line and three men turned in individual second-place showings to help the Great Danes to a third-place finish in the 35-team field.

Ortman finished second overall in her event with an ECAC-qualifying time of 2:12.96, eclipsing the previous record of 2:13.59 set by Diane Matthews in 2004. Ortman qualified for the ECAC Championship in the 1,000m event in December. Arina Gerasimova, last week's America East Co-Field Performer of the Week, won the triple jump for the second time this season with a leap of 38-feet, 11.5-inches.

Jenna Ortman, Jessica's twin sister, posted a sixth-place showing the 1,000 with an ECAC-qualifying time of 2:53.54. Senior tri-captain Jillian Sherman finished second in the long jump with a personal best 19-0. The mark also qualified her for the ECAC Championship.

In the men's competition, freshman Joe Greene ran an anchor-leg split of 47.7 to help the men's 4x400m relay to a win with an IC4A-qualifying time of 3:13.94. Greene took second overall in the individual 400-meter dash with a time of 47.83, which also qualifies him for IC4As. His mark was a personal best and 35-hundredths of a second off the school record. The UAlbany freshman also had a personal best 22-9.75 long jump to place sixth overall.

Gered Burns was second overall and the top collegian in the 500m with an IC4A-qualifying time of 1:02.90. Burns' time was second in school history and 24-hundredths of a second behind Howard Sellers' UAlbany standard of 1:02.66 set in 1993. Andy Allstadt was UAlbany's final IC4A qualifier at the meet, as he registered a time of 8:27.40 in the 3,000m run to finish second.

The UAlbany track and field teams resume their schedules at the Fourth Annual Great Dane Classic, held at the New York City Armory on Friday, Jan. 20.

  10. Here is an update on the Track team. Coach Vives keeps us connected to the team via e-mail. With his permission I have copied his latest update.

UALBANY WINS FIVE MEN'S, THREE WOMEN'S EVENTS AT ARMY'S CROWELL OPEN

West Point, N.Y. - The UAlbany women's 4x800-meter relay led the squad by taking first place and qualifying for the ECAC Championship with a time of 9:20.42 at the final day of Army's Carlton Crowell Open, held at Gillis Field House on Saturday, Jan. 7. Alyssa Lotmore anchored the team that included freshman twins Jessica and Jenna Ortman, and sophomore Danielle Trimpop.

The UAlbany men's team won five events at the non-team scoring meet. Freshman Joe Greene, who won the New York State high school championship in the 400-meters last year, finished in first place with a time of 49.58 in that race. Stephen Evans followed Greene with a second-place finish in a time of 51.08. The men also took first and second in the 60-meters, where Junior Burnett and Shamere Boland ran times of 7.03 and 7.16, respectively.

Freshman Joe Belokopitsky won the 500m with a time of 1:06.65. Junior Ray Gilman leapt 6'4.75" in the high jump to win the event. The men's 4x800m relay team also posted a first-place finish, with anchor Gered Burns running a 1:51.5 split.

Defending indoor America East triple jump champion Arina Gerasimova won the event at Army with an indoor personal-best 39'5.25" leap, which is also an ECAC-qualifying mark. Senior Patty Diedrich rounded out the women's winners with a first-place showing in the women's pentathlon, which was held yesterday.

Senior tri-captain Jillian Sherman recorded a personal best in the long jump with an 18'5.75" effort, while freshman thrower Candice Mann had a personal best of 39'11.25" in the shot put.

The UAlbany track and field teams continue their seasons on Friday, Jan. 13 at the NYU Gotham Cup.

ALYSSA LOTMORE WINS MILE AT FORDHAM INVITATIONAL

New York, N.Y. - UAlbany's Alyssa Lotmore won the women's mile run with a time of 4:59.03 at the Fordham Kickoff Invitational at the New York City Armory on Friday, Jan 6.

Lotmore finished 0.8 seconds better than her nearest competitor, Stony Brook's Leonora Joy, who captured the 2005 America East women's cross country title. Freshman Jessica Ortman took third place with a time of 5:01.22, while her twin sister Jenna Ortman had a time of 5:02.67, good for fourth place in the event. Both Ortmans set personal bests for the mile run.

The UAlbany women's pentathletes also competed at the first day of Army's Carlton Crowell Open in West Point, N.Y., where Patty Diedrich won the combined event with 2,988 points. Her long jump measured 17'2", a personal best for the senior. Freshman Kamilah McShine finished third, while UAlbany sophomores Brenna Militello and Valerie Maignan finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

The UAlbany track and field teams continue their seasons tomorrow at the final day of the Carlton Crowell Open.

  11. Below is an article from the online version of the Capital District Business Review. The University move up nicely in the rankings but falls well short Bing. and Stony Brook.

UAlbany rated among best college values

The University at Albany came in 46th in Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine's survey of best college values for public universities in the United States.

Other State University of New York campuses in the top 50 were Geneseo (7th), Binghamton (9th) and Stony Brook (35th).

"Each and every day we work very hard to ensure that students continue to have access to a very high-quality education at SUNY campuses," Chancellor John Ryan said.

Kiplinger's rated campuses on academic quality, cost and availability of financial aid.

During the magazine's last ratings, in 2003, UAlbany finished 81st.

  12. Jeff,

I guess I see it as a team sport. And when your best and most productive player loses control. You've lost control.

To clear it up for those of you from Maine:

If you are driving down the road with four family members and a moose jumps in front of your car and the driver loses control. The car is out of control.

In case its lost in print that was meant as a bit of humor.

  13. Patch,

All true and all good points.

    But...

If there is something behind the scenes with Bauman, Knotts, and Connelly that warrants there sitting on the bench in a blowout at home (in front of your family) it must be pretty serious. There three should be separated also. Knotts a senior and Buaman appear that they will most likely not make a meaningful on court contribution to the team. Connelly however is a freshman with expections. I've seen the thin years. A couple of serviceable bench players is really nice. On games when his services aren't needed and you can throw him 2, 3 or 4 minutes straight at the end can only help.

And of course these are all just "meaningless opinions", but thats what makes it fun. Without those we would have no website or any talk radio.

I do understand the coaching staff is in a tough spot. Winning will solve all of that eventually. But if there is a close call do you want to give the administration a chance to say "look we expected a little more and he lost another 2, 3, or 4 players again this year"?

I also sometimes, and I stress sometimes, try to remember these are kids (none of which are heading to the NBA) and getting a couple of minutes on one of the few nights when there was no reason not to would be nice for the kids and their families. Again just my "meaningless opinion", which outside of my own house all mine are.

  14. There was another rebound situation where Levine came away from an apparent shot to the groin. This was not to long after the loose ball and at the time I questioned wether somebody may have taken a cheap shot in traffic. Didn't see anything but thought it might be the case.

    Just one other point.

Both coaches missed this opportunity to pull the involved players off of the court in a game that was over. Maine will now most likely play without one of their best players for at least one game and his reputation is now tarnished. And Albany could have lost Wilson or someone else in a retaliation.

  15. Bofia lost total control. There was at least one other player that pounced on Lillis on the loose ball situation. Nothing too bad. I more specifically meant Bofia. And he did lose control and since that is all I have said I guess I havn't "exaggerated" the situation.

He wasn't provoked unless you call getting blown out of the gym provoked. I was on that side of the court and on the loose ball, which he never even had his hands on" he jumped on and was swinging away in the direction of the ball. Unfortunately it was in Lillis' hands the whole time. Not sure what B. Wilson did as I saw Levi step in to protect and was focused on him. Actually thought he had the T and it would have been a good one, as was Brents. Bofia and another player were on top of Lillis and did not stop at the whistle.

  16. Another good game all around. Nice win without much trouble. Until Maine lost control of themselves.

My only negative on the night was that the bench wasn't emptied a little earlier. I know this team has to win and learn how to win, but up by 18-20 with 2 minutes left. Empty the bench. We've lost palyers before (including this year) due to lack of playing time. You're not going to learn a lot about a player at that point but it may do them some good to see the floor. In particular, I saw 2 license plates in the parking lot with "Bauman" on them from PA. A long drive to see your son sit the bench even when its a blowout. Not a big deal, just an observation.

  17. Another good win.

Agree with the above posts on Jamar. Hitting those short jumpers should open up some drives all the way to the basket making him very dangerous. I didn't even mind the attempted oop to Lillis. It was there, he just didn't throw it high enough.

Lillis was great again. 5 pts, 6 boards, 3 steals, 2 assists.

Its fun to watch a team with so many options. How many players on this team are capable of scoring 15 pts on a given night?

Covington could be a very good player in this conference. Big enough to handle the very big and quick enough to handle the big/quick. Offense seems decent around the basket. Extemely strong with the ball. Sometimes too strong.

As for the crowd, decent for the student break and the night of a football national championship.

The Track Team is to be commended for their visible and vocal support. Its great to see a program show up and support its fellow athletes. Wether Coach Vives (also in attendance) recommends or requires attendance it is a good idea. Positive for both teams I'm sure.

  18. Has anyone seen Adeleke play. His stats are of course impressive. TU mentions possibly allowing Zoellner to play him one on one. If he plays behind him like he did Trim in the second half maybe it will work. Or maybe as we did against BU we allow one guy to kill us and just beat them everywhere else.

    Any holes in his game?

Any inside info on the Hofstra situation?

In any event look forward to a good game tonight.

  19. This is a good win. A game they should win, and do it handily.

Rewriting the point gaurd role is Brian Lillis: 2pts, 2 Assists, and 10 rebounds.

Siggers a nice 10 points, 5 boards, and 2 steals in 23 minutes.

50% from the line, absent Zoellner's 1-6 that's still only 66%, not good.

Other than that the spreading of minutes is what struck me. Some due to foul trouble some due to a big lead. But good to see many continue to contribute.

    Look forward to Wednesdays game.
