NEC very close to getting an auto-qualifying bid to playoffs by 2008 season.

GridironClassic game will be extended another two years, but it looks like it will be 2nd place NEC team versus winner of the PFL.

and oh by the way....the Big South is not eligible for an auto-qualifier yet....whoops SBU :P

An FCS conference needs six members to qualify. The championship committee then chooses which conferences get auto-bids. The NEC is eligible. But with a 16-team playoff, only 8 autobids are allowed. These are all taken, so the NEC would have to show itself better than one of the current 8 - or the playoff field will have to expand.

The 8 auto-bids are reevaluated every year, but its pretty much a rubber stamp process by what many refer to as the "Old Guard."

The 8 conferences have been the same for a long time:

CAA (formerlly the Atlantic 10)

Big Sky

Gateway

Southland

SoCon

OVC

MEAC

Patriot
