CAA Today Preview

http://www.championshipsubdivisionnews.com/index.php/2009/09/10/the-caa-today-a-game-of-inches?blog=5

Massachusetts ranked No. 17 by Sports Network and No. 18 in the coach's poll hosts Albany on Saturday. Both teams are coming off tough losses on the road and will be looking for that first victory in 2009. Against FBS K-State, UMass put up 110 yards rushing and 102 yards passing while giving up 225 rushing yards and 182 passing yards. UMass will rely on its rushing game to wear down the Great Danes while trying to improve on its third-down defense. Surprisingly, the Great Danes put up 209 yards rushing and 110 yards passing to only 58 yards rushing and 259 yards passing for Georgia Southern. Albany also won the time of possession battle. However, GSU converted a recovered fumble into a field goal and ran an interception back for a TD. The Danes cannot afford to turn the ball over if they want to stay competitive with the Minutemen.

Upset Meter [3-] Minutemen 23 Great Danes 20.

Preview every week of the Northeast Conference's 14th season on the gridiron with "The Whole Nine Yards." The weekly outlook highlights nine storylines surrounding the NEC's nine football members.

Can Danes Defy Recent History?

Albany travels to Massachusetts where the host Minutemen have won 18 of their last 20 games, including last year's 28-16 victory over the Northeast Conference champions. A hostile environment had little effect on Albany's veteran-laden team last week at Paulson Stadium as Georgia Southern needed a last-minute field goal to outlast the Danes in front of 18,118 fans. Jumping out to an early lead, something they did last year against the Minutemen, would certainly help to quiet a crowd that has seen UMass win its last seven home openers.

UMass doesn't play in the A-10. They play in the CAA. You know Mark, the same league that has been plastered all over ESPN lately for wooping up on the ACC last week.

And Kyle Havens did throw 27 touchdowns last year, but he didn't do it at UMass. He did it at Diablo Valley Community College. A little different.

The Minutemen held tough against FBS Kansas State, falling 21-17. Junior college transfer quarterback Kyle Havens (10-for-34, 102 yards, TD, two interceptions) had a rough game in his first start, replacing four-year starter Liam Coen.

While driving through New Hampshire last weekend I was able to pick up the UMass coverage of their game against Kansas State. Even though the content should be slightly discounted due to hometown bias, the UMass announcers were claiming that Havens' numbers were skewed greatly by a number of dropped passes. Their contention was that nearly a dozen catchable balls were dropped which could have provided the necessary difference for victory.

Another key time in the game was when UMass had a touchdown reception negated due to what the announcers referred to as hometown officiating.

I am looking at the game, and how well UMass played on the road at a Big XII competitor, and I am a little concerned.

Here's to hoping for the best.

In the 'Explore' T-U quarterly events magazine inserted into today's paper, Deb Renfrew informs us that in Bob Ford's 36th season (maybe she's not counting club) Albany is playing in the Patriot League

Pigskin mania

Where do they get this stuff?
