  1. I hope we get a chance to find out what it will draw. I think that game will definitetly draw more than the average. I'm not sure about the $iena women being a step up in competetion for that much longer. It wouldn't surprise me to see the Lady Danes with the higher RPI this year.
  2. I'll admit I don't know the other canidates or their experience but I think this would be a terrrific hire if not this time then in the near future. If I'm not mistaken Barnes has been at UA longer than the AD, the coach, the university president and one of the team mascots.
  3. Welcome to the Board! I'm glad you found us. If you have any problems or questions feel free to email me. Enjoy the board.
  4. I'm alot happier about the QBs. We would have terrorized the conference last year with a good passing game. I hope one of these guys pans out although they'll probably be red-shirted this year. Any special insight on Bocanegra GreatDanes84? I'm just curious why you picked him out although they do produce alot of good QBs out west-alot of summer passing camps.
  5. I wanted to add my welcome also. If you have any problems or questions about how things work feel free to email me at danefan1@localnet.com. Enjoy the board.
  6. OK Patch I'll bite. For starters I don't see Q at the small forward spot at all unless his ball handling skills improve dramatically. He can certainly guard the 3 and I like the way he plays but he can't handle the ball outside and definatly not in the open floor. I like him at the 4 much more. I would expect Dyson could be on the floor with Zoellner in certain situations. Like when the other team also has a block to block type PF on the floor. I'm really just guessing because he could come in and be terrific but at his size I would think quicker quys could just blow by him. I would really like Levi at the 4 with Zoellner on the floor. Outside of Bing, nobody can match up with Zoellner and with Levi, Jordan, Iati and Wilson camped out behind the arc who would you pull a guy off to double-team with. A few years ago when St. Johns was good they were very nearly upset in the NCAAs by Northern Arizona who had a 7 footer and surrounded him with 3-pt shooters. No matter what lineup the staff goes with they are either going to have Levi or Q coming off the bench which is a nice situation-a proven double-digit scorer to give a lift on offense if you need it (although we shouldn't very often).
  7. I figure if I give credit to the Rookies and Players of the Year I should give it to Dr. Mac on his award. He will be presented with the Outstanding AD of the year award today by the All-american Football Foundation. Congrats to Dr. McElroy! LEE McELROY RECEIVES GENERAL NEYLAND OUTSTANDING ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AWARD Albany, N.Y. – University at Albany’s Lee McElroy has been chosen to receive the 2004 General Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award by the All-American Football Foundation. He will be presented the award at the 60th Banquet of Champions on Tuesday, May 18 at the New York Hilton Hotel in New York City. McElroy has provided the leadership for UAlbany’s 19-sport intercollegiate athletics program since July 2000. During that period, he spearheaded the successful search for a broad-based athletic conference when the University accepted an invitation to join the America East Conference in January 2001. In 2003-04, the Great Danes have won conference titles in men’s lacrosse, women’s golf and men’s indoor track, while football shared its second consecutive Northeast Conference championship. McElroy was also a key figure as the University successfully completed the NCAA’s second cycle of Division I athletics certification in August 2003. A designation of certified means that an institution is operating with a commitment to rules compliance, academic integrity, fiscal integrity, equity, welfare and sportsmanship. In addition, he recently helped the University hire an architectural firm in an effort to develop aplan to improve the school’s athletic facilities, including the feasibility of the construction of a multi-purpose outdoor stadium and an artificial turf facility. McElroy, who was a linebacker at UCLA in the late 1960s, is currently serving as president of the America East Conference Executive Committee, and has gained national prominence for his roles with numerous professional organizations and NCAA committees. He is a member of the Division I Management Council as one of four at-large representatives from I-AA or I-AAA conferences. The All-American Football Foundation is located in Jackson, Mississippi. The foundation, started in 1994, is supported by colleges and universities nationwide, and has been established to honor individuals for distinguished contributions to the game of football in all phases of the game. The group hosts regional award banquets to raise scholarship funds that are presented to institutions for their outstanding college seniors

  9. I wish Todd well. The story in today's TU says he is going to Chaffney College (JC) in Racho Cucamonga, CA and will then try to transfer to another DI school when he graduates next year. According to the story it's all playing-time related. He seemed like a nice kid and I hope he does well now that he'll be closer to home. TU Story. Insiders has us looking at Clyde Hooks, a 6'7 JC small forward and Tom Conboy a 6'7 SF from Minnesota.
  10. Hough, Thomson, Magrass, Wyland Take Home Baseball Honors Maine’s Joe Hough (West Roxbury, Mass./Catholic Memorial) has been named America East baseball's Player of the Week, while Northeastern senior Jordan Thomson (Ottawa, Ontario/Vaughn Road) receives Pitcher of the Week honors. Vermont's Miguel Magrass (West Roxbury, Mass./Salisbury) and Steve Wyland (Stratford, N.J./Sterling) of Albany share Rookie of the Week accolades. The awards were announced Monday (May 17). Wyland went 5-for-11, including a game-winning hit, in the weekend series versus Maine. He went 3-for-4 and drove in both runs in his team’s, 2-1, victory in game one against the Black Bears. He lined a two-out RBI single to center field in the top of the ninth to put the Great Danes ahead 2-1.
  11. I was at the game yesterday and talked to some people about that same thing. We need to knock off a few of the ranked teams during the regular season and move a little higher in the brackets. The top 3 or 4 teams are just really tough. I'm not disappointed either-how could we be with 2 straight NCAA appearances? I wasn't really impressed with the size or the volume of the SU crowd. The team was pretty impressive however. A ton of speed on offense and it really showed in the 3rd quarter. SU's attack players just ran away from UA defenders and had some pretty easy chances on Rae. On at least two occasions he had a player with the ball 2 or 3 feet in front of him who just threw it in. Merrick Thomson can play with anyone. 6 goals and one assist-tied for third in an opening round tournament game.
  12. No miracle on the turf -TU. Orange crush Danes' dream-Troy Record Syracuse easily beats Albany-Syracuse Post-Standard.
  13. Tall order ahead for Olmstead, Danes-Troy Record. Thomson carries big stick for Danes-Albany Times Union. Danes know they aren't great yet-Syracuse Post-Standard.
  14. Syracuse Webcast. Carrier Dome Tickets and Directions. Syracuse Lacrosse Forum-I'm sure these guys will let you know how the game is going.
  15. Softball lost again today 3-2 to BU and are out of the tourney. Amazing this team only lost two conference games all season and then drop two straight in the tourney. Lingren pitched well again but it wasn't enough.
  16. The coaches have done a terrific job of scheduling more games at times that are fan friendly. I'm thinking mainly of the baseball game at the Joe and the lacrosse games at night played on the football field. I've been able to see alot more games than I have in the past few years. We've had a great spring in several sports but I'm curious which is the most popular. While I enjoy a baseball game now and then, I really like lacrosse more than I thought I would.
  17. There's a story in today's Syracuse Post-Standard on SU's defense. Cuse D.
  18. Insider has us listed as at least having some interest in Joseph Vines a SF from Rice High School. 6'5 and 240lbs, they describe him as a hard worker with both an inside and outside game.
  19. Just follow up on this. There is also a bus trip planned out to Syracuse. It will leave campus at 9 A.M. Tickets are $25, that gets you to the game, a boxed lunch and a beverage and a ticket to the game. Call Peter London at 442-4522 or email him at plondon@uamail.albany.edu
  20. The AE softball tournament starts today with the Danes taking on Maine at 2:30. The awards were given out yesterday and a big congratulations goes out to Coach Cannata who was named coach of the year. Cannata won the award last year and is the only person to repeat in the history of the conference. As expected Andee Lingren was named player of the year after an unreal season. UA also put four players on the first team and two on the all-rookie team. Freshman Casey Halloran (11-3 as a pitcher) had a good shot at ROY but it went to Nikki Thomson of Hartford. There's a very good story in the Troy Record about the softball program.
  21. There's a note on the Albany site for tickets to Sunday's lacrosse game. The UAlbany Athletic Ticket Office will have a block of NCAA first-round tickets for sale, beginning Thursday, May 13 at 12 noon. Contact Peter London, at 518-442-4522, or call the Carrier Dome ticket office, at 315-443-2121.
  22. From reading the $iena board it's clear most of them don't follow their women's program enough to know what kind of shape they'll be in next year and they certainly don't follow us. While Castelli has built a nice program I would expect them to be down a bit from this year with the loss of Marchino, Johnson and probably one of the best players to play there in Jansone. Siena's RPI last year was around 105 and ours was around 170, not light-years apart. I don't think I'm surprising anyone by expecting UA to be better next year and there is certainly the possibility that they will be worse. It would have been a good game. Anyway, it's too bad all this info had to come out at once because the other stories were good also. The Villinova game is a nice senior game for Wyatt and will be interesting to see how we do against a mid-tier Big East team. Hopefully the Iati's organize another bus trip like at UMBC. It's also great to see Barnes has a shot at the assistants job. He's been at UA through the toughest times and it would be terrific to see him get a shot at building the future of the program.
  23. I don't know that anyone else asked but I didn't. I assumed coaches couldn't talk about unsigned players.
  24. Made my first trip to the Joe last night. When it was built I was somewhat irritated they didn't build it "over here" on the west side of the river. None of the facilities were open last night as there was a small crowd but it is a very nice place to see a game. After visiting the HVCC campus there is no way we should get any resistance about a new football stadium. If they're willing to build a community college a $14 million baseball stadium they should be willing to do better for a University Center in the state's capital. I had some unexpected company as I ran into Alumni92 at the game. Also had a chance to meet Coach Driscoll and future Coach Barnes. They both had good things to say about the recruits and Jamar Wilsons health. The thing I was happiest to hear was them talking about Zoellner and they said he was a pretty good athlete. I can't wait to see him on the court. As for the game the Danes were their usual aggresive selves on the basepaths. Ran themselves out of some runs early in the game. The game was tied 1-1 when Brendan Chivaro killed an NYT rally by making an outstanding catch along the right field line and hit the wall hard. He was down for a few minutes and came back to the dugout limping. He didn't come back into the game. Danes rallied for a couple of runs in the bottom half of that inning keyed by some errors in the field. Seemed like Mueller eased off a little then a brought several freshman in. They more less coasted and withstood a late NYT rally to win 8-5.
