  1. just thought i'd bump this to the top: Dear Faculty, Staff and Students, You are invited to join the University at Albany community to celebrate the life of President Kermit L. Hall on Monday, September 18, 2006, 10-11:15 a.m., reception to follow. The commemoration will be held at the Recreation and Convocation Center (RACC) on the uptown campus. I strongly encourage everyone to participate in this important public gathering to honor President Hall and his substantial contributions to higher education and UAlbany. Students who have class should speak to their instructors, and staff to their supervisors, regarding attendance. Parking and shuttles will be available in all Quad lots. Please continue to share your remembrances of President Hall at www.albany.edu/president

  3. I found it interesting that in this morning's article about Fredette by Dave Filkins, he referred to "message board chatter". I didn't quite understand how it fit into the article, but at least he's honest enough to acknowledge that boards exist and that he apparantly reads them, contrary to the not so believable assertions of some of his media brethren.
  4. I was hoping the article would live up to the headline and the punchline. My recommendation to the author is that he do some homework. If the ASP maintains archives that go back to the 60s and early 70s, read the pre and post game articles. Do the same for the Times Union, which are on microfilm in the UAlbany library. Interview Doc Sauers and some of the players of that era; it's not too hard, several are season ticketholders, or frequent attendees. Even interview Coach Ford about the football games of the 70s. I saw Rudy Vido in the Varsity Club tent on Sayturday; i'm sure he has some interesting memories. To many of us it does not have to become a rivalry; it is and always has been a rivalry.
  5. Brown game is Saturday, December 9 http://brownbears.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl...skbl-sched.html
  6. With the new Varsity Club two beer maximum rule, i need to learn the tailgating rules. Where is it allowed? and where is the best place?
  7. A small group of us were entertained tonight despite barely understanding the rules. I can only recall Siena getting 3 shots on goal. The most comical aspect was with about 15 minutes left in the game, Albany leading 5-0 and Siena having only gotten one shot on goal through the first 55 minutes; an Albany player had a shot go out of bounds and behind the net - as she went to retrieve it, the Siena fans were shouting for a delay of game penalty, as if the few seconds that ran off the clock would affect the outcome.
  8. I'm also planning on attending my first ever field hockey game tomorrow night. Anyone who knows the rules and wants to explain them could feel free to stop by Sutters before the game. After all, it is chicken wing night.
  9. The service is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM, on Monday, September 18
  10. Was Shelby Goldman injured yesterday? The box scores indicte she played very little in the morning game and not at all in the evening game.
  11. FWIW - Singelais has two front page sports section articles today as he covered the Forego and the Woodward (which Funny Cide ran in) at Saratoga. While i surely am highly prejudiced, i think if there was a poll of Times Union subscribers as to what they considered a more significant sports story between Funny Cide running in the first Woodward Stakes to be run at Saratoga, or UAlbany football at Lehigh, the results would be lopsided. So, while i have many issues with Times Union choices of coverage (as a high school football fan, i thought Friday was the worst opening day coverage i have ever seen), I can't fault sending Singelais to Saratoga. I also note the the University has taken a half page ad in today's print edition promoting next Saturday's game vs Fordham and fireworks to follow. Fair or unfair, sometimes you have to pay to get your coverage and I'm glad the University realizes it. Now, totally unrelated to anything, i watched the Ballston Spa - Albany High game yesterday and saw something i had never seen at any level. Ballston Spa ran a fake dive and sweep play. The fake was so good that when the Albany High defense tackled the guy without the ball, the ref blew the whistle, while the actual ball carrier was just turning the corner and headed for a sizeable gain.
  12. Quackman - your thoughts on Ron Everhart are like preaching to the choir on this board.
  13. Coach Eaton's final two blogs: ERIC EATON'S FINAL BLOG FROM NCAA ALL-STARS TOUR IN BRUSSELS, BELGIUM Aug. 30, 2006 -- Tonight's game (Aug. 29) was a physical battle against a tough Brussels team that played very well together. They had good size, a solid playmaker, and some shooters. We fought hard but they were able to wear us down and pull out a 92-71 victory to drop our record to 3-2. Our team played much better defensively, but some foul trouble caused us to go small for a longer period of time than I would have liked. Our scoring was lead by Jason Siggers with 17 points and six rebounds and Iona's Anthony Bruin with 13 points, nine rebounds and three blocks. Brussels' grind-it-out style held us to only two players in double figures. The scoring was rounded out by Carmen Maciariello (8 pts), Michael Knight and Tay Fisher (5 pts each), Brent Wilson (3 pts), Carl Ross and Lamont Arrington (2 pts each). Unfortunately our last game against Oostende has been cancelled due to issues with the gym. It's 12:45 a.m. here (6:45 p.m. ET) and we are trying to make plans to return to Holland and do some sightseeing. The trip has been a tremendous experience for all of us and we are looking forward to returning home to family and friends. I thank everyone for keeping tabs on us throughout the trip. My best to Carmen and Lamont as they embark on professional careers and good luck to Anthony (Bruin) and Tay (Fisher) as they play for Iona and Siena, respectively. ERIC EATON'S THIRD BLOG FROM NCAA ALL-STARS TOUR IN BRUSSELS, BELGIUM Aug. 29, 2006 -- The squad faced a first division team for the first time on the trip and the results were not what we had hoped. It seemed as if our fourth game in as many days caught up with to us as our performance was dominated by turnovers and uninspired defense. These things aside we entered the fourth quarter down seven points and within striking distance. I don't think you are ever out of a game when you have talent like we do. Unfortunately, the experience of a team whose average age is 26, took over and we were beaten by PP Basket Grrok Leuven, 80-66. Siena' Tay Fisher led the way with 22 points and five rebounds. He was followed by Jason Siggers (15 points & 6 rebounds), Anthony Bruin (14pts/8reb/4blk) and Brent Wilson (11pts/2reb). Leuven did a good job making us work for shots and limited us to four guys in double figures. The scoring was rounded out by Michael Knight (6pts), Carl Ross (5pts), Lamont Arrington (5pts/6reb) and Carmen Maciariello (2pts). We had a much needed day of on Monday (Aug. 28) and we spent it exploring Brussels. We had a chance to see a few museums, the King's Palace (we knocked but he was out!!) and the Grand Plaz. Unfortunately the prices were a little high so the shopping was limited. A few of the guys had their first crepe and may be adding to their culinary skills when we return home. It's off the play the 1st division team from Brussels on Tuesday!
  14. It appears that Siena player, Tay Fisher and Siena alum, Carmen Maciariello and playing for Coach Eaton's team. The blogs are on the UAlbany basketball website: ERIC EATON'S SECOND BLOG FROM NCAA ALL-STARS TOUR IN HOLLAND AND BELGIUM Aug. 26, 2006 -- On Thursday night we took the final of the tournament against the home team SKU Lions, 110-76. UAlbany's Brent Wilson led the scoring charge with 20 points and eight rebounds. Jason Siggers and Anthony Bruin (Iona) followed with 18 apiece with Bruin bringing down 18 rebounds. The scoring was rounded out by Tay Fisher (Siena, 14pts), Carmen Maciariello (10pts), Lamont Arrington (Colorado 10pts), Carl Ross (11pts), and Michael Knight (9pts). We moved on to Gent, Belgium on Friday (Aug. 25) and were fortunate to pull out an 86-80 victory over the Gent Dragons. Jet lag really caught up to us and we struggled to find any rhythm on the offensive end and any energy on defense. Needless to say we will all be in bed early tonight!!! Mike Knight played strong and banged five three-pointers and finished with 21 points. Tay Fisher followed with 19 including some big free throws down the stretch. Jason Siggers chipped in with 14 and Brent Wilson tossed in 11. Other scoring included Anthony Bruin (8 points & 6 rebounds), Lamont Arrington and Carmen Maciariello (5pts) and Carl Ross (2pts). The team will remain in Gent for the remainder of the trip and play Division 1 pro teams Lueven, Brussels, and Oostende over the next few days. UALBANY'S ERIC EATON SENDS FIRST BLOG FROM NCAA ALL-STARS TOUR IN EUROPE Aug. 24, 2006 -- Our trip was long but it was well worth it. Amsterdam is a beautiful city with friendly people and a rich history for us to explore during our stay. We got in at 7:45 a.m. (1:45 a.m. ET) and tried to get some rest. Our first game of the tournament was Thursday night at 6:00 p.m. against the Dutch National Police Team and I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. With the long night of travel and the guys sleeping in undersized hotel beds, it would have been easy for them to find excuses to not play well. Fortunately they put the adversity aside and worked hard for a 121-61 victory. Although we have not had much practice time we played as a cohesive unit, shared the ball, and yes, even played a little defense. The scoring attack was led by Carmen Maciariello (Siena '01) with 23 points/6 rebounds. UAlbany's Jason Siggers (20pts/10reb), Carl Ross (18pts/5reb/3blk), Michael Knight (18pts/5ast) and Siena's Tay Fisher (13pts) also contributed to the blowout. Brent Wilson (15pts/6reb) and Iona's Anthony Bruin (12pts/10reb/5blk) led the attack inside and keyed the teams' fastbreak attack. After the game we had dinner in the University dining hall and spent some time with the students who had just returned to start classes. The apple pie was tremendous!!!! Then it was a quick shower and time to explore downtown Amsterdam. Before the trip I did a little research on the country and its' architecture. I must say that the buildings are some of the most beautiful in the world. All of us were amazed at the style and grace of these aged structures. After a walk through downtown it was back on the van to try to get some sleep and regulate the internal clock! Game time on Friday night is 8:00 p.m. in the tournament final!!
  15. JAMAR WILSON'S SECOND BLOG FROM ATHLETES IN ACTION TOUR IN FRANCE (Jamar Wilson, 12:11 a.m. (Paris Time) – Sunday, Aug. 20) Today (Aug. 19) was our first game. We played Bordeaux. It’s a Level B team out of France. Level B is the second-best level. They won the championship last year. Going into the game I was a little bit anxious. I had never played the foreign game. The lines were a little further out and everyone seems to carry the ball when they dribble (I will not have any problems with carrying the ball ... ha ha!). I had so much fun. I didn't seem to have any problems getting wherever I wanted on the floor and making plays. I finished with about 16 points and four assists, in about 15 minutes. It’s pretty funny that I go to the smallest school (in terms of basketball credentials) on the team, but I am one of the most respected. I am being told to transfer to other schools, but I don't think they understand that the Great Danes have the biggest bite. The other side to the great game was an ankle sprain that I have. It’s not that much of a deal but I am probably going to sit out tomorrow. I know Coach (Will Brown) would probably have a problem with me playing tomorrow (Sunday). It is not that bad of a sprain but I am not going to lose out or anything by playing. We have a big season coming up. I could use the nice sauna and whirlpool that we had at training camp right now. We ate McDonald’s today and it was the best McDonald's I have ever had. The food was so fresh and the McDonald's looked futuristic. It was so clean. There were Mp3 players in the windows for people to enjoy, elevators, and televisions everywhere. The only thing that annoys me here is the small portions that they give you, and it’s everywhere. The cups are really small and a large-size meal is like a medium. The team has the most amazing bus. There are two places to enter and exit from. You almost have to step up in your seat to sit down. We have a water fountain and tables for cards. Our bus driver has to take an hour brake after a certain amount of driving. We drove like two hours and he had to take an hour brake (haha). Well I have to go get some treatment. I am missing the purple family back in the Capital Region. I will be home soon! ~31
  16. UALBANY'S JAMAR WILSON SENDS BLOG FROM ATHLETES IN ACTION TOUR IN FRANCE (Jamar Wilson, 1:22 p.m. (Paris Time) – Friday, Aug. 18) I just got off the Eiffel Tower and it was amazing. I have some of the coolest teammates. Training camp has been over for some time and we have been scrimmaging and doing clinics. Yesterday was our final scrimmage. We scrimmaged an all-star team from Paris. The rules are a little different over here; the referees call the games really tight and they lean more towards the French. But I still played well. People get really excited seeing Americans play (basketball), it’s almost like a different world. The scenery is amazing. I have been taking pictures of everything. The cars over here are so small. Gas cost 148 per liter, which turns out to be 7-8 dollars a gallon. I am sending this e-mail from an Internet Cafe and it is taking me forever to type. The keyboards over here are different, it’s almost backwards. I am headed to the Chapel of Notre Dame. I will take pictures for everyone. GO GREAT DANES! ~31
  17. I can't imagine Doc Sauers and Billy Kirsch doing this, but i guess times have changed, and it is certainly a worthy cause: UALBANY BASKETBALL LENDS HAND TO COACHES VS. 18. other speakers included Provost, Susan Herbst, VP for Student Success, James Anderson and George Philip, who headed the search committee that chose President Hall. Several speaker, including Provost Herbst, VP Anderson and Mayor Jennings had moments where they had to take a second to compose themselves. VP Anderson told how he had been in e mail communication with Pres. Hall just prior to Pres. Hall going out to swim, to review his week's marching orders. He commented they joked about Pres. Hall needing foul shooting lessons for the next time he has to shoot in a contest. Chancellor Ryan told an anecdote about Pres. Hall talking his way into a SUNY trip to Ukraine and a side trip with Ryan to Moscow. As many know, Ryan's military background makes him a stickler for being on time. He had told Pres. Hall that he could join the trip to Moscow on the condition he arrive at the airport on time. Pres. Hall arrived ten minutes late, but apologized saying he became engaged in speaking with a group of Ukranian graduate students, and Ryan accepted the reason. Several people related how Pres. Hall liked to engage not only the students , faculty, and deans, but the maintenance people and groudskeepers as well. Virtually all the fall sports teams and coaches were there. I also saw Coaches Brown, O'Donnell, Filien and Friel, as well as many season ticketholders, Varsity Club members, etc.
  19. There will be a remembrance service this afternoon at 3 PM by the small fountain in front of the Campus Center. Also, Mrs. Hall has asked that all memorial donations be made to the inagural scholarship fund. I would also like to express my appreciation for the kind sentiments of some of the Siena fans expressed on their forum.
  20. I 'm having a hard time believing this http://www.myrtlebeachonline.com/mld/myrtl...al/15267103.htm http://www.capitalnews9.com/content/top_st...asp?ArID=188722 http://timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp...sdate=8/13/2006
  21. FWIW - i've been told that the Brown game is in December and is not on Thanksgiving weekend.
  22. In addition to the current & former players mentioned, Alicia Learn played for Central.
  23. I note that the River Rats schedule is in today's papers and they are on the road on December 2. The obvious question - - if the Albany - Siena game is on December 2, why can't it be a night game?
  24. so, we will play Brown and UConn on consecutive days? http://www.uconnhuskies.com/MainLinks/Sche...l&Season=W06-07
