Tim Wilkin taking over UA Sports for the TU
danefan replied to MRSGDG's topic in General Danes Stuff
They should have hired Brian Fitzgerald, IMO. It can't get any worse than it is right now though. Good luck Tim and if you read this just take one piece of advice to heart- UAlbany athletics is actually good for the Capital Region. In fact its likely the hidden gem of the Capital Region. Expose it and you'll make a name for yourself writing about something other than gambling. -
Slightly, OT, but it has come up in discussion here before so I thought some of you guys might be interested in this. http://blogs.albanylaw.edu/dean/2009/09/29/a-silly-idea-made-worse-by-the-economy/

Men's Basketball PG Commitment- Mike Black
danefan replied to haggyland's topic in Winter Sports-Danes Hoops, Track
He will not be playing next year....he will however work out and lift with the team! He will have 4 years of eligibility remaining starting in '10 Does that mean he will be considered a walk-on? Yes. Anyone not receiving a scholarship is a walk-on. He'll be a red-shirted walkon. Paying his own way with 4 years of eligibility remaining. -

Another thing about rivals - they will change their ratings once a kid signs. So if you have a 3-star recruit that picks a school like Albany, that rating may drop to 2 stars solely because he ended up at a lower ranked school. So the long and short of things is this - Rivals/Scout, etc.....worthless once yet get passed the top 50 or so kids in the country. After that the sites are rating on 4th and 5th hand knowledge of a kid's game. Not really accurate, IMO. -

why don't they just put FieldTurf down? 17086 Because its around $800,000 for good field turf and why spend that money on Univserity Field when its going to be a stadium parking lot in three years? The stadium field will be field turf. 17087 They haven't even broken ground yet, or even showed us a model of what the stadium is going to look like and you expect it to be built in 3 years? Do they even have the funds secured yet for the project? I hope you're right though. I'll believe it when they start shoveling. 17088 We shall see in the near future....I hope....but what I will say is that just because "we" haven't seen models doesn't mean they don't exist.

I haven't posted the rankings in a few weeks, but I thought I should even if we aren't ranked. My small part at creating a IAA football culture in Albany: Ralph over at i-aa.org has a great table compilation of all the rankings at the following address: http://i-aa.org/article.asp?articleid=80343 Good to see Delaware back in the top 25. It would be nice to have Lehigh win the AQ from the Patriot, but it looks like Holy Cross might have a lock on it.

I just thought of something. Does anyone know the specifics of the Giants situation here? I have to imagine they are building new practice facilities when they build their new stadium, so do we expect them to stop coming up here for camp? If they do plan on continuing camp here, why wouldn't they want to get involved in this stadium project? They could have a good scrimmage in a 15,000 seat stadium, couldn't they?

I love the fact that when something negative happens everyone wants to say the Albany Football is bigtime, but yet when we win those same people say we are a team that no one cares about and therefore no media coverage is warranted. I really mean this towards the TU, not you ASP GUY, becasue I don't really know you or what your role on the ASP is, if any.

First off lets wait and watch and see how this plays out. This is a traumatic experience for the victim. These are extemely serious charges against the 2 students. This is a horrific life altering event for all involved no matter what legal decisions are reached. Colleges and Coaches (like parents) can only instruct, guide and direct their students and athletes as to what they "SHOULD DO". Individuals at some time must make decisions for themselves. Students control their own daily lives and actions. Kids with fine parents sometimes make terrible decisions when on their own and Students sometime well instructed and given solid guidance make terrible decisions when on their own. In this case we are talking about 2 or 3 individuals who made terrible decisions. 16862 Great post.

Actually the DA and Guilderland Police have not investigated anything yet. That is the issue I have with this situation. In fact the DA's office was not even informed about the arrest until at least 12 hours after the arrest and then they were informed by a reporter who was seeking comment. See the TU article. University Police Dept. is the investigating and arresting agency. My issue is that the standard practice, according to the TU, is to make an arrest and then contact the DA and investigate. It looks good from the response time standpoint, but doesn't that sound like it would be pretty easy to jump the gun on something. I'm not saying that this happened here, because we don't know. But I just wanted to point out the possibility. By the way...I completely agree with ATL_Dane.

What about the victim Quackman? Why are we applauding the AD? This is a much more serious charge to what occured at Niagara. (Baseball vs. Basketball guys) There wasn't a helpless female involved in that case. Maybe we should applaud the victim. Hazing training etc. are we acting or reacting to cover our backs? Day late and a dollar short ; if and I mean if the charges do stand true against those student athletes 16858 I disagree with your analysis of the Athletic Departments efforts. The latest actions taken by the department are not the initial counseling in this issue. They are just refreshers being done in the public eye. All student athletes are schooled on issues such as this during pre-season camp, its just not covered by the TimesUseless. Furthermore, I know from experience, that Coach Ford always discusses and warns the team about staying away from these situations during summer camp. He and his staff have done so for years, even before the Duke incident.

From NYS Penal Code Sec. 130.00: "5. "Mentally disabled" means that a person suffers from a mental disease or defect which renders him or her incapable of appraising the nature of his or her conduct. 6. "Mentally incapacitated" means that a person is rendered temporarily incapable of appraising or controlling his conduct owing to the influence of a narcotic or intoxicating substance administered to him without his consent, or to any other act committed upon him without his consent. 7. "Physically helpless" means that a person is unconscious or for any other reason is physically unable to communicate unwillingness to an act." I have no background in Criminal Law besides first year criminal law. I'm in the tax area of law. I just cut and pasted from the statute itself. And I am only posting this in response to inform those who want to know.
