SHELDON, Iowa — In a battle between two undefeated and state-ranked Iowa boys basketball teams, the Sheldon Orabs held on to claim a 44-42 Siouxland Conference win over the MOC-Floyd Valley Dutch Tuesday night.

The Orabs, who are ranked No. 9 in Class 2A and had a 10-point lead going into the final quarter, had to withstand a 13-4 fourth-quarter run by the Class 3A third-ranked MOC-Floyd Valley squad. The Dutch run pulled the visitors to within one point (43-42) with under 90 seconds to play.

Dallas Ennema scored 21 points to lead the Orabs. Chris Balster, who made the front-end free throw of a one-and-one with a fraction of a second left in the game, finished with 13 points and Nate Oostra added seven points.

Sheldon (7-0, 5-0) travels to Sioux Center Friday, while MOC-Floyd Valley (4-1, 4-1) hosts Rock Valley the same night.

    MOC-FV 6 16 7 13 — 42

    Sheldon 13 12 14 5 — 44

  3. Game #1

The boys game went to Sheldon 65-48. The Orabs jumped out to a 19-5 first quarter lead and behind a 14 point second quarter by Dallas Ennema led 37-17 at halftime. At the end of the third quarter Sheldon led 53-26 before going on to win it 65-48. Ennema led all scorers with 29 points hitting 11 field goals and 7-of-7 free throws. He was joined by Collin Wolthizen who pumped in a dozen.

It was the season opener for both boys’ teams.

    Game #2

SHELDON, Iowa — A big third quarter helped the Sheldon Orabs extend a slim halftime lead into a big Siouxland Conference boys basketball victory on Friday over the George-Little Rock Mustangs.

A total of 10 Orabs scored with Dallas Ennema scoring 15 points to lead the Orabs. Sheldon also received 12 points from Nate Oostra, nine from Collin Wolthuizen and eight each from James Gradert and Tom Brown.

Tanner Ver Steg knocked down six 3-pointers to pace the Mustangs with a game-high 20 points, while Austin Hayenga added seven points.

  4. dyslank, I don't see a downside to Rowley other then his size. He's very mobile, is quicker than most 4s, can put the ball on the floor and gets to the rim and often to the FT line. He can also defend the 3-5 positions when needed.

From what I've heard Devlin is struggling not just in games but everyday in practice. I would guess that's why his minutes are limited right now.

The one thing about him is that when he's in there you know he'll work hard. He had a big putback against Siena and one against Colgate the type of plays that go somewhat unnoticed but when you are in close games they can be difference makers.

Also from what I've heard Coach really likes Luke and what he can bring to the table, lets hope he finds his shot and his minutes go up it can only make us better.

ps - I think Luke was taken for stitches after the game yesterday

  5. But as you noted at the game yesterday, Hooley looked a lot more like a freshman against Colgate. -UA72

Hooley is freshman - coming off a year layoff - we should expect him at times to play like a freshman, but a pretty good freshman 11pts, 3 rebs and 3 assists in 26 minutes with just a single turnover.

Colgate blocked 5 shots with most coming off of Guerrier and Rowley and we have to get used to Rowley getting a few shots blocked at 6'4"/5" he's truly an undersized "4" man making his living where the 6'7" -6'11" giants live, and overall doing a pretty good job I would add.

  6. Still politically correct

I'd like to see a game at SEFCU every other year but keep the tickets out of the season ticket package (but season ticket holders get 1st choice) so we could charge more for the game.

Maybe the Siena fans would boycott the game (that would be great) like they want to do their next homegame after we humbled them saturday. All kidding aside the atmosphere would really be electric.

  7. Folks you are allowing the "TU" to be successful. They are stealing your joyous moments from the Albany Cup victory by getting you stirred up with ugly, poorly written and unresearched stories. The sole purpose of which is to take you away from feeling good!

We have won 5 of the last six Albany Cup games (men's and women's) over the last three years. At this moment we are Albany basketball!!!

    Enjoy it!!!

  8. ......Where are all these fans that show up for the football games during the fall? -UA08

What fans - we avg 4,000 for 5 home football games all on Saturday.

One was "Hall of Fame" day and one was "Homecoming"

Basketball has had 2 Home games and is avg 2700

Remember football has about 70 guys suited up by each team for each game and the visitors travel better because all games are Saturday and there are limited chances to see their team play.

    Basketball suits up 12.

As good as our FB is they should be avg 6-7,0000 easily

I would say both FB and Bsk support is poor and leave it at that.

  9. ....So why was the coaching staff in such a rush to get rid of him? - haggyland

The staff was not trying to get rid of him they were trying to do what was best for him.

Reportedly the GA position was suppose to be a two year (non playing) position - if he played this year there would probably be no spot for him on the staff the following year - and Jacob reportedly like John wanted to get into coaching.

When Suero and Logan left unexpectedly Jacob saw an opportunity to possibly play significant minutes and decided he wanted to give playing one more final shot. He is currently playing and taking graduate courses.

The decision was his - the Coaching staff and the Iati family have a solid long standing relationship and there was no way that Jacob would be squeezed out as you kind of insinuate.

If he chose to be the GA the spot was his.

  10. Coach Brown on Wyland's radio show today said it was some sort of "Hip Pointer"

He hurt himself during the UMKC game

Coach Brown said he came out against Loyola and tried to go and had to come out twice in the 1st half and then struggled early in the 2nd half and with around the 11 minutes to go they decided to shut him down rather then chance further injury.

He was happy with how the team competed without Mike.

  11. Who could have imagined that we would get 25pts/15rebs combined out of Puk and Rowley with Puk playing 17min and Sam playing 26min. Lets just hope they continue to play solid it make us so much harder to defend as a team.

Coach mentioned post game that Coach Ferry said he wanted to take away/limit Black, Iati and Guerrier but our bigs hurt them.

That's a new one!!! I'd like to hear other coaches say.

  12. I don't even have an isea who our real starting team will be? I figure they will go with the returners at the start of the season but after that I don't have a clue.

Black ? His talent isn't the question I have. My question is, is he willing to carry the load when things get tough????

Metcalf or Puk or both???? has Puk truly found himself as a player?

Luke - is he back to form or just a little better then what he was last season????

Can Iati and/or Evans play along side Black - that makes a miniscule backcourt.

Is Rowley a man without a true position?

Will Hooley ever be healthy - med RS last season, banged up right now? Evidently he was good in Canada last preseason but was hobbled most of this preseason. Alot of promise but no substance YET!

Guerrier - we know he can shoot - can he rebound enough to play some 4 can he defend enough to guard 3s?

Will Johnson and Wiegman adjust to DI and give us solid minutes or can either be a starter or a disappointment

Is RS Fr Chris Page committed to doing all the little things or is he just a streak shooter?

Tanner Gibson is out - how long?

With all those questions I still feel the team will be good - I just don't know how good

  13. DP are you talking about Logan's no socks look (LOL)????

Maryland pulls away to 73-61 win over Indiana Pa

By DAVID GINSBURG (AP Sports Writer) | The Associated Press – 14 hours ago.. .

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- Freshman guard Seth Allen scored 16 points, Nick Faust had 13, and Maryland bounced back from a poor first half to beat Indiana University of Pennsylvania 73-61 in an exhibition game Friday night.

It was the lone preseason contest for the Terrapins, who face defending champion and third-ranked Kentucky next Friday in the Barclays Center Classic.

Maryland trailed early in the second half before Allen made two foul shots and a 3-pointer during an 11-0 run that made it 44-36. Faust capped the surge with a 3-pointer.

After IUP closed to 49-45, Pe'Shon Howard and Logan Aronhalt nailed successive 3-pointers to spark an 8-0 surge by Maryland.

Mathis Keita scored 16 points for the Division II Crimson Hawks.

IUP led at 34-33 halftime by limiting Maryland to 32 percent shooting. Although Faust scored 10 points in the opening 11 minutes, the Terrapins missed 20 of their first 27 shots.
