Neely moving great....great to see him out there, hit a nice baseline jumper and strong drive just now.

Watching live, I thought he looked a little hesitant. With an injury that took over a year to heal, I'm sure this is normal. At one point he had a sure dunk, but pulled up and threw up a 3 foot air ball. Not being critical, I'm glad he is being cautious and taking it slow for now.

The reason that I mentioned the number of steals is because it seems that UA never outblocks our opponent. I can't remember the last time we had more of them than the others on the court. With a lower-ranked team facing us, I thought this game might be the one time blocks were in our favor. Again, my concern is only very minor.

Yeah, I understand. Some players have a knack for it like Descortes with WBB the last few years. If they gave Jackson a green light to block shots he’d have 5PFs by the ten minute mark. I love that kid’s motor and aggressiveness.

Not sure I get your connection between shot blocking and steals. Two mostly unrelated STATS. Many ways to get a steal and even if you block a shot does mean you automatically gain possession. I would guess perhaps only ½ the time or maybe less, do you gain possession on a blocked shot??

On the other hand a steal is a steal and you have the ball, until someone steals it back, you turn it over, score, or miss a shot that is then rebounded by the opponent.

Not being critical, just don't understand your connection between blocks & steals? I absolutely agree that UA recently gets many more shots blocked than they block themselves.  Although this year UA SEEMS to be blocking more {I have not checked STATS, but just guessing based on game viewing.}

BTW, that was olddog71 that said that, not me.

Can't find the quote, but I seem to remember a coach saying that blocked shots happen when somebody's already blown their defensive assignment.

So we should have had a lot of chances to block shots last year

I’ve never played organized basketball so this is pure spitballing…I would think the point of all defense is to deny the opponent from passing to the person/area you’re defending….deny an opponent an opportunity to take a shot…or denying an opponent the ability to penetrate to the basket.  So when you think of when blocks occur, yeah….one or all of those things have gone wrong.. a perfect defensive “possession” is one where the opponent can’t penetrate or line up for a shot before the shot clock expires. Shot blocking is kind of the last resort….so I can see the point the anonymous coach was making. But on the other hand who doesn’t like an epic rejection into the tenth row? Except for the coach that is.

Because then the shooter’s team gets the ball back. Keep it on the court and defense has a chance to get the ball back.

A little clarification. I didn't give an explanation as to why UA may be getting blocked more than blocking. I just noted a discrepancy between us and other teams in that statistic. I'm sure there is an explanation somewhere, but I sure don't know it.

Sorry Jimbo; did not mean to connect the shot blocking/stealing quote to you. Just copied it from your response {my mistake}. Just trying to point out that the two are not the same thing and the only connection is, each is part of a defensive scheme. Bad or good shot blocking and being bad or good at steals, IMHO have no direct correlation.
