  1. Wish I knew you were there. My daughter took a tour of Wagner that morning. Agree on the stadium, but they could cut the trees opposite to give a great view of NY harbor. Most of the Albany fans were at one end of the bleachers, while I sat near midfield, in front of Tex Wilson's parents. Entertaining to see the Wagner fans get increasingly annoyed with the 'First down - Albany' chants.
  2. The news release about Stewart's hiring has just been put on the UAlbany web site. Hiring Also posted is a story that Hutcheson is getting a laparoscopy for a kidney blockage, and O'Bannon is getting her knee scoped. No word on their recovery time until after the surgery.
  3. If Albany gets into the PIG, could we get the Pepsi to paint over the $iena logos on the floor? Since Indian fans would get first crack at the tickets, I wonder what kind of reception we'd get.
  4. I was surprised by the announced attendance of 5,340, another fan and I both estimated around 3,200, unless there were an awful lot who stayed at the parking lot tailgate. But those who were there were more into it than usual. One potential recruit at the game was Hoosick Falls QB Chad Wysocki. I work with his mother, who said he's kind of looking at UA, and they're kind of looking at him.
  5. I just looked inside the RACC. Either they've changed the section numbers, or the season ticket application, which is what I looked at, is wrong. The East side seats are section 200 and the West side are labeled as section 600.
  6. I couldn't make it, but I talked to someone who told me: 1. Ford is junking the QB platoon to go with Sciarra 2. Kick returner Kenny Williams broke a bone and is out - the 7th broken bone on the team this year 3. Zylinksi is still kicking XPs and punts OK, but his head's messed up for field goals like a bad golf swing.
  7. I and at least a couple of the above sit in section 600, roughly in rows K thru R, on the left (seats 9-16).
  8. I'd like to hear from someone who was there; it seems that just like the Brown game, they gave up on the run too soon, trying too many passes an third and short instead of banging a third time. I don't like running from a one-back set either, I'd prefer a lead blocker.
  9. Can't tell you about the Indians before 1968, but as for the other colleges, RPI had hockey and never paid much attention to hoops themselves, St. Rose went from NAIA straight to D-II so they never played UA much, and the Fighting Wombats of Skidmore were women-only until the mid-80s (when they started men's teams, they changed the name to Thoroughbreds). Then when cable TV and ESPN arrived in the late 70s attendance at all D-III sports fell off. I also suspect that forty years ago fewer students had cars (forbidden to freshmen at RPI) so there wouldn't be quite as much mingling between students in the bars of Schenectady, Albany and Troy, while $iena had mainly commuter students and is centrally located but has few spots near their campus. That's just a guess, though.
  10. Sagarin has us 5.6 point dogs. HOME ADVANTAGE= 3.34 203 Monmouth-NJ AA = 39.01 209 Albany (NY) AA = 36.72 The Georgetown win probably helped their rating. MU had 3,500 attendance last week, and THIS week is homecoming. They said after the last game they like to put 8 in the box to take away the run, and they also like to wear you down with the run (long 4th quarter drive against Wagner). But they haven't been able to score a lot of points except against the MAAC.
  11. QBs don't need CAREER days (except for them so far), just complete enough to loosen up their D. Bazan returning helps. MU's been doing it on defense, Wagner game was the first time their offense showed much. Albany secondary has to take care of missed assignments as in the SFU game. Of course, Albany O still has to cut out the turnovers, can't give them a short field. Anyone have word if T-W cable will pick up the MSG-Metro feed, or where you can find it on satellite or in some bar?
  12. Robert Morris 20 vs. Central Conn. 17 Sacred Heart 27 vs. Siena 9 Stony Brook 19 vs. Georgetown 16 Wagner 10 vs. Monmouth NJ 17
  13. Last year I thought SFUPA improved, especially on defense, under their new coach, but this year they're giving up 38 ppg. Rain could slow their passing game.
  14. Article in the Richmond Times-Dispatch about the current A-10 meeting, some schools (Northeastern, 'Nova, New Hampshire, maybe UMass and RI) looking to reduce the number of scholarships, others wanting to keep all 63 Article The Colonial AA is discussing starting a football league if A-10 FB schools join them. Discussion and rumors on the CAA board Along with the probable end of MAAC football if any more teams drop it, just more factors in Albany's FB future.
  15. I get your point, but if there's a small crowd like last week the home side doesn't look much better. I was thinking that the angle from the roof would show more of the field and less of the stands, and is the view people are used to watching a TV game from.
  16. Fine, but that's NOT what you wrote. Obviously EVERY maac team is not better than the REST OF THE AE. There's a lot of overlap.
  17. Not nearly, by last year's final Sagarin: 70 Manhattan = 80.17 120 Siena = 76.01 133 Boston U. = 75.42 151 Fairfield = 74.44 160 Vermont = 73.97 169 Niagara = 73.35 171 Iona = 73.20 212 Marist = 69.88 213 Hartford = 69.81 214 Binghamton-NY = 69.79 217 Northeastern = 69.61 220 Maine = 69.53 226 Canisius = 69.01 229 Rider = 68.56 254 Saint Peter's = 66.82 266 Stony Brook-NY = 65.70 307 Albany-NY = 60.76 310 New Hampshire = 59.82 313 Loyola-Maryland = 58.21
  18. I've asked about the food concessions, they're part of the University's overall food contract, so it may be tough to separate out athletics until the contract's renewed. There may be a problem giving away tickets to high schools, since the students are potential recruits, unless the NCAA only bans individual comp tickets, and not mass giveaways. You could still give them to middle schools, though. Yes, there were kegs on the hill, but they were banned when the drinking age went up from 18. (common response: "What, they expect us to watch Division III football without beer?"). That was before the north stands went up in the late 80's. I just noticed those seats are starting to rust. Even without a band, the school does have a fight song - the Earthtones have recorded it - and they ought to play it a few times a game, if not after every score, just for a kind of brand identification, showing it's a program that stands on its own, instead of just playing Notre Dame's march or old rock songs. They've got to make it look like the university itself takes the program seriously. I wish the local TV would shoot their tape from the gym roof to give the game highlights a more professional look than those awful field-level, shoulder-held camera shots like from every high-school game. Ruler, tell you what... if it's that easy, get your own office, take 10% plus expenses, (don't forget naming rights) and the members of this forum would probably kick in enough to buy you your first phone until the money starts rolling in.
  19. Times-Union story 10/4 If she goes to Florida soon, the timing isn't good - the RFQ responses for athletic facilities planners have been returned and interviews start soon, but an interim president may be reluctant to make a major commitment, and who knows how long a search for a permanent replacement may take.
  20. looks like all seats are chairbacks, and FIVE ticket windows. Next they'll tell us they can sell hot dogs as fast as fans line up for them.
  21. $iena's already at the bottom of the Sagarin this week and we should hope all NEC teams win all non-conference games to move up the rankings
  22. If the MAAC is so superior why did Sagarin last year rate it only 2.6 points higher (one more three-pointer) than AEast? 19 METRO ATLANTIC = 71.26 20 BIG WEST = 71.07 21 SOUTHERN = 70.65 22 IVY LEAGUE = 70.26 23 ATLANTIC SUN = 69.36 24 MID-CONTINENT = 68.75 25 AMERICA EAST = 68.66 26 PATRIOT = 67.86 27 SOUTHLAND = 67.68 and while the state schools improve, what are your boys going to tell RiderRaver when he touts his Broncs? What hope for Loyola? Even the MAAC is closer to #31 MEAC that to the BCS level
  23. or, if you find them in another color system, the official colors of the UA logo are gold (pms 124) and purple (pms 269) see page 7 of UAlbany graphics manual
  24. From the CAA board: Those italicized have been postponed until 2004-05 From the NCAA website: Rules changes are listed below in the order in which they will appear in the 2004 rules book. Rule references are from the 2003 rules book. An asterisk (*) designates where men's and women's games differ. Rules 1-2, 1-6, 1-7, et al. -- Recommended that the international three-point line and free-throw/three second lane, including the international free-throw lane lines and neutral zone/block be adopted for the 2003-04 season, with the exception that the dotted semicircle that is on the international lane to govern jump balls would not be needed. The rationale is to spread the defense to reduce rough play.* Rules 1-6 and 1-7 -- Free-throw lane lines and the three-point line may be any color because, with the new three-point line, they no longer intersect. Rule 1-13.1 --The basket ring can be constructed of one or two orange metal rings. Previous language allowed only one metal ring and commonly used current equipment gives the appearance of two metal rings. Rule 1-17.4 -- The red light behind the backboard that signifies the end of a period, which is required for Division I schools, must be visible through the marked rectangle on the backboard but that LED lights around the backboard are permissible to be used in lieu of these red lights. The rationale is that the location of the red light needs to be consistent for the officials' visibility, but the committee recognizes that the visibility of the LED lights is superior to that of the red light and therefore may be used instead of a red light. Rules 1-17, 2-8 -- Recommended that a timing mechanism that enables an official to start and stop the game clock automatically on the official's whistle be recommended for all Division I arenas.* Rule 2-5.1 -- At or near the end of any period, officials shall be permitted to consult a courtside television monitor, when such monitor is available, to assist in determining if the game clock or shot clock expired before the release of a shot. Previously, rules did not permit officials to consult a courtside television monitor under such circumstances at the end of the first period, nor did they permit consulting a monitor at any time to determine if a shot clock violation occurred. The rationale is to give officials more assistance in making the correct call in period-ending situations while continuing to limit the potential for interruption of game action by maintaining firm limits on television monitor consultation. Rule 2-5.1.4 - When an official timer's mistake occurs, it must be corrected by the official during the first dead ball after the game clock has been properly started or before the second live ball while the game clock is running and the ball is dead. Previously, there was no such limit. Rule 4-13.4.b -- Related rules shall be changed where necessary so that there is team control on a throw-in from out of bounds, but, unlike other team-control situations, the throw-in team can cause the ball to go into the back court (i.e., no violation) and the three-second lane violation count does not take effect until the throw-in ended. The rationale is to simplify the rules governing the throw-in and the team-control foul, which was created for the 2002-03 season. Rule 10-5.6 -- Removed "accepting a foul that should be charged to a teammate" from the list of direct technical fouls for unsporting player conduct because it is left over from the era when players were required to raise their arm to indicate to the scorer who fouled and is no longer pertinent. Rule 10-17.4 -- Recommended that in the rare instance when a student-athlete with eligibility for the next season gets into a second fight of the season in the last game of that season, that student-athlete shall be suspended from the next three regular-season games of the next season. Appendix VII -- The commonly used swing of the leg used by officials to signal a kicking violation shall become an official signal. Men's Points of Emphasis In addition to continuing emphasis on reducing rough play ... Proper calling of the intentional foul Illegal blocks (in block/charge situations) around the basket Decorum of bench personnel Experimental Rules In recognition of the adjustments that will be need to be made because of the trapezoid and new three-point line, there will be no experimental rules this season.
