What a waste of a season
UAalum72 replied to GreatDanes06's topic in Spring Sports-Baseball, Lacrosse, Softball, Track + Golf
And how close Albany was to the men's T&F championship, losing to Northeastern 163 - 162.5 while finishing behind them in the 4x100 by 0.08 seconds. -
Shawn Ryan Story
UAalum72 replied to Dane Pound's topic in Spring Sports-Baseball, Lacrosse, Softball, Track + Golf
Today's Troy Record reports Zim has left the team for 'personal reasons' and Vallone is 'questionable'. -
The Northeast Conference allows up to 30 (no more than 10 per year) football counters (players on any portion of athletic scholarship). Also, the 'ships must be need-based only. For 2002 (last year I saw numbers) Albany had 9.5 scholarships, about $90,000, probably divided among 15 or more players. Also counting toward the limit were five players who were here on track or baseball scholarships.

SU Game Stories
UAalum72 replied to Dane Pound's topic in Spring Sports-Baseball, Lacrosse, Softball, Track + Golf
As we discussed at the game, the program and NCAA t-shirts listed us as 'ALBANY (NEW YORK)' (so no one would confuse us with that OTHER University at Albany Division I lacrosse team?) Have to win a tournament game next year to stop this soon - St. Joseph (PA) still can't get writers to drop the state. Callers on the Orange post-game radio were complaining that UA was hitting their scorers after every goal, but the refs wouldn't call it - they must have wanted to keep the underdog in the game! Yeah, right. -
While browsing Pres. Ryan's Spring Report to the Faculty http://www.albany.edu/news/campus_news/200...ing_faculty.htm I saw that 'A lacrosse alumnus has donated $250,000 to the program for our new turf field, as part of the Athletics Master Plan. Once approved through SUNY Central, the field will be named in his honor' That should be about 1/3 of the cost of the turf so it will probably the first improvement funded.

Today's Gazette
UAalum72 replied to UAalum72's topic in Spring Sports-Baseball, Lacrosse, Softball, Track + Golf
Another example, the T-U today has the second front-page story on $iena BASEBALL in a week. That's pretty good coverage for a mediocre (23-21) program in a weak league -
Tonights lacrosse game

UMBC is broadcasting the game online. 'Teamline' link from UMBC Lax page -
Total of a full page in today's Gazette on the success of UA spring sports programs, McElroy saying how much the public has been calling him with congrats. Quotes from Cannata and Mueller, both saying that player development is key because they get raw talent (Mueller: "If you have the horses, you can ride"). Big pictures of Kroft, Lindgren, and 800M champ Gered Burns. Mention of the master plan, need for football, lacrosse and track facilities, and maintenance of high academic standards while building on-field success.

Final score 8-1 http://www.albany.edu/sports/stories.htm#baseccsu They're part of the Conn. State University System, so they may not want CSU. But yeah, as Division I they should separate themselves from Eastern, Western, and Southern CSU. They might not want to go with SUC. CCSU had an RPI of 127, Albany 78 starting this week.

When Beeten was fired, Brown was already on staff; a vacant position can be temporarily filled via promotion immediately, but a permanent hire, whether renegotiating a contract or hiring from the outside, probably has to be posted. Brown was coach for about six months before losing the interim tag. Patterson was hired on May 6, less than 2 months after Warner was not renewed.

Binghamton Lax Overrated?
UAalum72 replied to alumni '92''s topic in Spring Sports-Baseball, Lacrosse, Softball, Track + Golf
Of course, we could also root for UMBC to lose to Stony Brook in Balt. or to UVM in Burlington. Retrievers don't seem nearly as strong as they thought they were when the season started. -
Albany has committed to the NEC THROUGH the 2006 season. Unless there's a buyout/penalty clause we could pay, we're stuck until the 2007 season. Since the NEC aid must be need-based, the best we could do is get to the 30-man (10 per year) max for 2005 underclassmen, then get 20+ full scholarships for 2006 and redshirt all of them - if they play we'd have to declare ourselves ineligible for the league championship. Then for 2007 add another 20+ to get to the 63 max for I-AA. When we start hearing about next year's recruits, then maybe something will come into focus.
