  1. The data is meant to be informational, but here are some of my observations/rationale:

    1. 11 of the 19 sports have achieved either one or both of those accomplishments within their last season. (Very impressive figure.)

    2. The women's cross country team has never won a title, but as their coach/director has experienced tremendous success, I will offer a pass.

    3. Neither soccer team has won a title, but America East soccer is highly competitive. The men have a relatively new coach, and the women have a highly qualified coach, so hopefully one or both of the teams can win a title soon.

    4. Will Brown and Scott Marr are quite similar. Both coaches were hired in 2001, and both last won a title in 2007. Basketball is still in full swing, and the lacrosse team was just picked first in the conference, so hopefully a title can be won.

    5. Baseball has not won a title in five years, and that is about all I can say about that.

    6. Although golf won a title three years ago they were given a yellow light because that title is from the America East Championships where they finished first out of three teams. I would like to see sore more success before I would feel comfortable giving women's golf a green light. With a brand new coach, they are a program to pay some attention to.

    7. Tennis has been dominated by B.U., but UAlbany recently hired a new coach with a track record of success. He has already brought in some very impressive talent, so this is one program that may receive a green light soon.

    8. With B.U. leaving the conference, these accolades should become a little more attainable. Until I looked at the data, I did not realize how dominant the B.U. women's tennis team has been.

Again, this is just to offer some perspective. Overall, the athletic department is in very good shape.

  2. I took the time to compile an Excel spreadsheet of the last championship or trip to the NCAAs for each of UAlbany's 19 separate sports. Included in the data is the name of the current coach, and the year they were hired.

The information is found in Post #1.

I have also applied a "stop-light rating" for each of the individual teams, offering my subjective judgment on their recent athletic success.

Green lights were reserved for programs that have won either a conference title, or made a trip to the NCAAs, within the past couple of years.

Yellow lights were reserved for programs that have gone a fair amount of time without achieving either of those accomplishments.

Red lights were reserved for those programs that have never achieved either of those accomplishments.

  3. Plus the baseline seats have fewer rows and a steeper pitch than the sidelines, and you have to leave openings so players, staff, and medical personnel can get to the floor without coming down the steps; filling the corners would only add a few hundred seats, so unless you're doing a total rebuild I wouldn't bother.

There it is in a nutshell. Time to take over the TUC.

You have to change the name of that building before it would be suitable under any conditions

Coach Abe Court at The Across the Street Pub Arena?

  5. Does that population include the dorms (which should be 5-7 thousand by themselves)?

I do not think it can, as I thought the census required permanent residency.

Any public policy majors want to jump in?

PS: In case you want to play around: http://mcdc.missouri.edu/websas/caps10c.html

It looks like we "over-populate" UMass Amherst's stadium up until the 50 mile radius. (Knowing, of course, that they play their games in Foxboro Stadium now.)

  6. Still a bit in the manic phase, but I found a website that allows you to specify any point in the U.S., and to create population radii around it for the 2010 census data.

I plugged in the 50 yard line for the new "multi-purpose stadium" (which can be found very specifically using Google maps: 42.680696 latitude, -73.827131 longitude), and found the populations within various miles from the new stadium.

    1 mile: 12,567

    5 miles: 181,811

    10 miles: 433,813

    25 miles: 779,173

    50 miles: 1,401,35

Moral of the story? With a good product, and 8,000 seats in a brand new stadium, these population figures show why every game next year should be sold out.

    I feel exciting things coming...

  7. seems like work has slowed quite a bit (perhaps due to the weather). Anything going on behind the plastic or out of view of the camera? Maybe Brutus can chime in on what's been going on as of late.

A little bored with the webcam, and having some time this afternoon, I walked around the construction site today.

They have started placing the outer facade on parts of the tower, so hopefully next week we can watch them finish that work.

One thing I noticed about the tarp is that the middle part of it juts out towards the field. I looked at the construction plans, as I thought it was a straight line for its entire length. It looks like that is where the bathroom sinks and a handicapped restroom will be located.

  8. Offensive tackle Eric Hampson, from Florida. Verballed with Old Dominion:

CAA benefiting recruiting? Try this quote:

"Hampson said Nagy began recruiting him shortly after being hired at ODU in December. He said he became intrigued with ODU when visiting Albany, which plays the Monarchs next season.

"They were talking about how they were going to play Old Dominion and that was a big deal," he said. "That made me think that Old Dominion is a big deal.""

  9. Sharessa Richards was not ranked at all and has been terrific so far this season.

I took the time to go to the UVM game, and I walked away highly impressed with Ms. Richards. She ran like a gazelle, and always was involved in the play.

If Coach Abe stays, and Sharessa keeps developing, I am going to make a seriously bold/stupid prediction, and say that Ebony's new record could be in danger.

Find this thread in three years. I will either be an idiot or a genius, but that's the way I roll.

Usually the former latter with you... :-)

    Fixed.

  11. This seems like a good time for my obligatory (since the "blowing a 19 point lead against your undermanned crosstown rival" game) once a year post on the state of the men's basketball program (even if I did post once after the Bingo game this year.)

    My thoughts?

    1) End of the first half tonight (about 15 seconds to go):

    • SBU inbounding the ball; UA with four team fouls (2 to give.)
    • SBU inbounds the ball. A few dribbles. Maybe a pass or two. Clock down to about ten seconds.
    • UA fouls, forcing SBU to inbound again.
    • SBU inbounds the ball. A few dribbles. Maybe a pass or two. Clock down to about five seconds.
    • UA does not use the last foul to give, and waits until the SBU player is in the act of shooting.
    • SBU player makes 1 of 2 and goes into halftime with a six point lead instead of a five point lead.
    • WHAT GIVES! (Am I missing something?)

    2) Blackout promotion tonight:

    • First 1,000 fans get a free T-shirt with a pre-season potential POY's name and number on it.
    • The kid wearing the T-shirt in the contest during one of the time-outs scores on a lay-up, hits one of his free throws, and ices a three pointer on one attempt.
    • The kid/man wearing the official jersey gets shut out.
    • WHAT GIVES!

    3) If the conference tourney is the only thing that matters (according to many on this board), and because players with incomplete scouting reports have enjoyed so much success this year, going forward I think the coaching staff should:

    • Start players 9 through 13 in the regular season slate.
    • Secure the 8 seed in the tourney by going 0-16 in conference.
    • Break out new starters in the form of the five best players, using the next three best as reserves.
    • Win three games in the AE Tournament before the coaches have a time to adjust.
    • Get into one of the NCAA play-in games and run the table from there.

Either that, or start beating the upper tier of the league. This is no longer a SMALL SAMPLE SIZE!

    -Transmission ended.

  12. More on NJ OLB Naiquan Thomas (Offered). Rutgers involved:

RHODE ISLAND LIKES THOMAS: Naiquan Thomas became Dwight Morrow’s all-time leading rusher this season, and colleges are taking notice.

The University of Rhode Island offered Thomas a scholarship earlier this month, his first college offer. But the Maroon Raiders don’t expect it to be the last for the 6-foot, 205-pound senior running back and linebacker.

"He’s got an offer from Rhode Island and now several schools are coming into the picture," Dwight Morrow coach Barry Harris said. "I’m extremely happy for him, he’s worked hard."

Thomas is also drawing interest from Rutgers – the Scarlet Knights visited with the Thomas family Monday – and Albany and Wagner.
